Excellent book on how to raise private capital for real estate deals!The author does a great job of really outlining what it takes and how important it is to treat other people’s money. Raising money is not a joke! The author knows this and is careful to outline what you must be ready to do should you take on investors capital.

Matt does a great job walking you through his experiences and how to get into real estate. A great road map for anyone looking to get into real estate through purchasing property, investing in a syndication or raising private money. A very clear, concise book and easy to follow. Anyone can get into real estate but it is hard work and a marathon.

Matt does a fantastic job outlining and summarizing all the moving parts of financing real estate deals. From the purchasing of a simple flip to the underwriting and syndication of a large apartment complex, he discusses the many options a real estate investor can use to expand their real estate portfolio (whether it's from family, friends, colleagues, banks or even complete strangers). Definitely worthwhile and a must read!

I liked this book a lot, because you get so many different things in it! Excerpts from classic books about the sea and sailing, poems, etc, plus practical knowledge such as knot tying and signalling, plus stories about famous sailors, both modern-day and of olden times. For an excellent all-around look at ships and the sea, get this book. Plus...check out the size of the wave on the cover!!

I have loved the sea and its stories my entire life, so when I received "To the Sea" I was elated. From a photographic point of view, this book is, in my opinion, unequaled. The pictures are astounding... wonderful color, great action, and there are many several-page fold-outs. I enjoyed very much the inclusion of ancient and modern excerpts from the works of many varied authors-- from Edgar Allen Poe to Joshua Slocum, from Coleridge to Hal Roth-- each with a unique perspective on the sea. But there is a downside to this in many ways amazing book. There are so many grammatical and technical errors that it makes the reader (at least this reader) wonder if it was ever edited. Spelling errors, begun-yet-not-completed-sentences, bad grammar, and a generally poor grasp of engaging writing left me, while spellbound by the pictures and poems contained within, more than a little upset. Instead of becoming lost in the stories or accounts, I found myself anticipating spelling mistakes or wondering when the next run-on sentence would occur. Meisel obviously knows what he is talking about, but presents it in such a "research paper" fashion that it is difficult to really appreciate the end result. In addition, he sometimes seems rushed to get his ideas down, and in the process does not develop them as he should. His descriptions of voyages and sagas on the sea throughout history are short and lack a depth someone so versed in the sea could have brought across. I was constantly left thinking, "man... if only there were another paragraph or two on this topic..." If Meisel would have taken the time to expand his thoughts further, the reader would be that much more taken. "To the Sea" could easily have been 50 to 100 pages longer, and would be better for it. On the whole, though, it is worth reading, and in many areas quite memorable. And, as said before, the photographs are unbelievable. If you love the sea, it is a worthwhile addition to your library. If you are an English professor, stick to the pictures.

This is not just a coffee table book to display on your table, but a book to pick up each night to broaden your knowledge of the sea, to lean more about the sea and sailing. I enjoyed reading the first chapters on explorations and the ways of early mariners, of tools used for navigation and early sailing vessels. Mixed in the chapters are pages of instruction in the tying of knots, "how to" tips on things on your boat, consturction details and rigging. The chapters that were of most interest to me were the ones on "Racing Against the Elements" and the one on "Storms and Disasters." I have been in many types of racing and was involved in the rescue of a sinking sailboat in a stormy race where a sailor almost lost his life, but thanks to the help of all sailors involved, the person was saved. This chapter on disasters would be to ever sailors advantage to read and know details. I will leave the chapter on "Sirens and Serpents" for you to read and reach your own conclusions, for we all dread the serpents we think live in the sea and we all fantaize of the mermaids that may also live in the sea! As a final comment, if you also love pictures of the sea, this book has some of the best!

As someone who has had a lifetime interest in the Asian martial arts, (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Kendo, and Kenjutsu) cultural/educational arts (Haiku, Senryu and Tanka poetry) and historical aspects of Japan I am always seeking unusual and unique books on these topics. I actually purchased this book on Amazon for a bargain price (Daughters of the Samurai: A journey from East to West and back by Janice P. Nimura) because my wife wanted to read it. After she read the book she suggested that I read the book because of my interest in Japanese and American history. This wonderful and highly informative historical tale tells the story of early Japan (1871) and how they sent men and women to America to learn our language and other educational topics in our schools (Grade, high school and college programs). It was a time of great struggle for Japan who was trying to change from a feudal country to a modern society. The turmoil was between the traditional Japanese cultural system promoted by the Samurai class to the modern western approach to modernization in Japan. This conflict led to many battles in the country.This is a story about three amazing girls sent by the Japanese government to America in 1871. These three girls came from the traditional Samurai families. This book chronicles the ten years they stayed in America learning English and other subjects and their return to Japan to become teachers (Sensei) focusing on the women’s education. In the past, Japanese woman’s role was limited to taking care of the home and children. Though I had read numerous historical books in the past on Japan this unique book covered areas I never had read bout in the other books.This is a well written book that also has many photographs of the Japanese men and women who this book is all about. Anyone interested in the history of Japan and the early American educational system will enjoy reading this book.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Nimura’s wonderful book opens in 1871 with the empress of Japan dispatching three clueless girls - Sutematsu Yamakawa, age eleven; Shige Nagai, ten; and Ume Tsuda, six - to the United States. Their task was an almost impossible one: to learn the ways of the West so that their knowledge could be passed on to other Japanese women. Their journey lasted ten years.Nimura paints vivid portraits of each of the girls - the smart, overachiever Sutematsu, the arty Shige, the spoiled Ume. Two of the three end up at Vassar, with Sutematsu becoming the first Japanese woman to earn a American college degree.But back in Japan, they found a world turned upside down.“They were each of them, purebred daughters of the samurai,” the author writes, “they became hybrid by nurture,” not at home in America or their native Japan.“I cannot tell you how I feel,” Sutematsu said upon stepping foot in her native country, “but I should like to give one good scream.”Highly recommended.

This is a slice of history unlike any other I have read. As Japan wrenched itself violently out of its medieval structure, five girls aged 7 to 12 were sent to the United States to live for a decade in which they were to become fluent both in English and western ways and then to return home to teach what they had learned to women in Japan. Given the almost random method of their selection, it is amazing just how well three of them succeeded, both here in the U.S. and then back in the still very tradition-bound Japan. An enjoyable and fascinating read.

Good book and good read particularly if you haven't followed Jeff's blog in the last two years since the book is a collection of his former blog posts. That said the book it's worth a read for everyone who is interested in microbiome and health. How can I say that? Well I'm cofounder and director of the Italian Microbiome Project and an author of books on this subject. Thus I know what I'm saying. To make a long story short, it's a good collection of essays on microbiome and microbes. Well done Jeff!

Great insight to what may be the closest to our primal gut-biome with the Hazda's. I annotated quite a bit, full of great info.!

I like the author's personal experience in altering his gut bacteria. The personal experience was then set against the results of larger studies and well explained.The narrative was injected with humor and without dietary bias.

Great! Looking forward to his next book(s):)

Fascinating enough to make you want to know how your poop compares to the world. The micro biome in our gut is the next wave of disease prevention.

Content is excellent, and Jeff's mind is incredible, but seriously - hire an editor!

This is not what it appears. It is not a book but a series of meandering blog posts. There appears to be no point taken, no knowledge to be gained but just a series of rambling observations about bacteria. It is interesting in brief bursts, but there is no continuation of any discernible central thesis. I feel cheated.

Poorly written. Needs to get a good writer to tell his interesting story.
