Review

"Pinkney (Silent Thunder) presents eloquent portraits of 10 intrepid African-American activists for the causes of abolition, women's rights and civil rights. Exploring these individuals' childhoods as well as their accomplishments as adults, the author smoothly distills biographical information so as to hold the attention of young readers. Her selection of subjects includes the prominent (Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Shirley Chisholm) as well as such lesser-knowns as Fannie Lou Hamer, an indefatigable campaigner for African-Americans' right to vote. Pinkney's writing is spiced with colloquialisms ("She didn't shy back for nobody," she says of Sojourner Truth) and useful imagery (describing this same crusader's delivery of her renowned "Ain't I a woman?" speech, the author notes, "She was the only black woman in the place, and when she stepped to the pulpit, some folks looked at her like she was a stain on their purest linens"). Featuring creatively skewed perspective and proportion, Alcorn's (I, Too, Sing America) oil paintings offer allegorical interpretations of his subjects' lives." Publishers Weekly "Engaging text and glorious art are combined in this collection of sketches celebrating the contributions of 10 women who moved forward the cause of civil rights in America. Following a preface that describes her own family roots in the civil rights movement and their influence on her, Pinkney presents her heroines chronologically, from Sojourner Truth to Shirley Chisholm, in verbal portraits that capture the subjects' spirit and personalities amid biographical highlights. Blending straightforward narrative with a lively storytelling style, the author balances the hardships and racial injustice that these women faced against their faith, strength of character, and determination. They include Harriet Tubman, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Rosa Parks, as well as Biddy Mason, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Ella Josephine Baker, Dorothy Irene Height, and Fannie Lou Hamer. The book includes many quotes, incidents, and details that lead readers down their personal paths to historical recognition. However, it is Alcorn's vibrant, inspired oil paintings that make this book a standout. A full-page stylized portrait appears opposite the first page of each story; it is filled with symbolic details that are elucidated in the text. A brilliant example is a larger-than-life Harriet Tubman balanced on one knee over a railroad track with arms diagonally outstretched, bridgelike, as tiny travelers make their way up the steep height toward the freedom star. Smaller paintings appear within the stories, carrying the message further. Line, color, and canvas texture give the pictures depth and dynamism, vastly enriching the reading experience. This excellent collection is a must for every library." School Library Journal

Reading about women facing adversity...beyond Harriet Tubman! Intriguing, educational and just what this world needs!

5 year old is really enjoying these stories, and us parents are learning a lot too about some amazing Americans who get way too little credit in history classes

What a wonderful book about female heroes in African-American history! Not just dry facts, but told from an intimate perspective with the author's feelings about the characters shining through. An example: I've read many stories about Harriet Tubman and a couple biographies too, but Let It Shine showed her to be a real person, a person of bravery, a person with backbone, a person with a caring heart--more so than any other reading I'd experienced. This is a children's/young adult's collection, so it does not dwell on the warts that all humans have, but it exalts in what makes the characters stand out as examples to follow.

This is a great book for both kids and adults. Its an easy to read book that really captures the sense/feel of what these great African American women experienced. The information in this book really stayed with me moreso than other books i've read on these same women. I first learned of this book when my 5th grade daughter bought it home from the school library. I was quite impressed that her school carried this great book.

This was the first writing guide I had ever read. There were SO many pointers that I found helpful - such as the stressing of writing every day, getting your work published, the need of an agent, the different types of fantasy and science fiction, writing dialogue, etc. etc. etc.A lot of the book was showing her personal experiences as a writer, which I found helpful because I like to be shown an example rather than be just told how to do it. I learn better that way. :)She interviewed several writers and editors, which helped me see a bit more of what my experience might be like with an editor.Overall, I think this book is very good for anyone, who is beginner in the fantasy and/or science fiction writing field. One point that I would like to make is that the the author's example of an omniscient author wasn't exactly the most appropriate - on pp. 83 and 85, I think.I think this book is best for a teen and adult audience. My rating: 8 out of 10

I purchased this book on the recommendation of George R. R. Martin.I thoroughly enjoyed his Song of Ice and Fire series (so far) and the author of this book is a former student of his, so I thought it was going to be golden. My expectations were somewhat lofty. The bottom line: if you want some good hints and general information, get this book. It has plenty for the price Amazon is asking.Don't expect this book to make you a top-notch writer though. No book can. As a previous reviewer stated: practice, practice, practice.

This is a well thought out and interesting introduction both to the craft of writing and the subject of fantasy and science fiction. The emphasis is away from so called " hard " sf and more towards what I call more imaginative or " impossible" fantasy writing. The book has been updated to include recent developments such as writing for the internet and includes more recent writers such as J.K. Rowling.

This book is far to general and abstract to make you a great writer. Something I liked about the book was the examples of how different writers used specific "devices" in their writing. I also liked the Q&A with publishers at the end.Sadly though, the bulk of the book can be summarized as:Read a lot to keep up with the field andWrite a lot to get practice.

Wonderful, awe-inspiring how to book. One of the best from the best. Its only natural.I do have one thing to say to the reviewer below. While Fantasy does have its differences from SF, they are still essentially the same. As a matter of fact, all fiction genres are essentially the same, because all of them draw from facts fabricated from the human mind. Sherlock Holmes and James Bond are completely of the imagination, and still they're mysteries and not Fantasy or SF based only on the subject matter, but beyond that there's not much difference. I can understand that you must've picked up a horrible SF book or seen a crappy SF flick, but that doesn't mean they're all bad. I also read fantasy, and it I assure, there are some Fantasy books to be ashamed of, but I still read fantasy. Just thought I'd state that. Check out: Orson Scott Card, Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert A. Heinlein. You'd be unbelievably surprised.

Cajal's Butterflies of the Soul: Science and Art

Review

"The book considers the most beautiful images from three eras: the "Benedictine" period of indistinct forms; the classical period when a special nerve cell stain, the "black reaction" of Camillo Golgi, ignited a passion in Ramon y Cajal and other histologists of the late nineteenth century for the fantastic shapes of nerve cells; and the modern period in which the black reaction was expanded by new stains to produce magical cell forms in every color of the painter's palette. Here are images of nerve cells to match van Gogh's sunflowers, Monet's water lilies, or el Greco's View of Toledo. The book is an education in the fundamental concepts behind today's brain research as well as an inspired vision of science as an artistic and aesthetic enterprise."--Gordon M. Shepherd, MD, DPhil, Department of Neurobiology, Yale Medical School, New Haven, CT "Santiago Ramón y Cajal has found a modern embodiment in the author whose eye for the beauty revealed by the microscope and gift for romantic language provide a vision of the nervous system that matches that of the master himself. Cajal and many of his contemporaries portrayed their findings in lithographs that have a character all their own, a character that has disappeared from modern representations of nerve cells and their connections. There has probably never been a collection of the most striking of these illustrations from a bygone era to match that assembled by Javier De Felipe. What is particularly pleasing is that the majority undoubtedly came from publications that Cajal himself had held in his hands. The result is not only a work of high art but also one that reveals the progressive development of knowledge about the finer structure of the nervous system in the 18th and early part of the 19th centuries."-Edward G. Jones, MD, PhD, Director, Center for Neuroscience, UC-Davis"This beautiful volume presents a pictorial history of how the nervous system was illustrated in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This was the era of artistic creativity in the study of the brain because, until microphotography became well developed, scientists of the nervous system had to be artists to communicate their observations. For Cajal, the "butterflies of the soul" from the book's title were the elegant principal cells of the cerebral cortex (the pyramidal cells), whose study promised some day to reveal "the secret of mental life". This lovingly prepared book, by a leading Cajal scholar and neuroscientist, will fascinate artists and scientists alike with its marvelous microworld of unusual forms that describe the architecture of the nervous system."--Larry R. Squire, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry, Neurosciences, and Psychology, UCSD School of Medicine, Research Career Scientist, VA Medical Center, San Diego, CA "This book does not only present the artistic products of early human and comparative neuroanatomy and neuropathology, but also provides an insight into the artistic skills of early neuroscientists in illustrating the fine structure of the nervous system in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Thus, it informs about the fundamental concepts of early brain research and gives an inspired vision of science as an artistic and aesthetic enterprise."--European Journal of Neurology"...it [the book] is a stunningly gorgeous work with two-hundred-and-eighty-eight incredible images. Anyone who is in need of content for their coffee table, this is it. The illustrations are just breathtaking, purely and simply, and, of course, naturally. It is...invaluable. I highly recommend it; there is brilliant text as well."--As reviewed on the blog Just One of the Guys...In Search of Cosmic Wisdom., by Benjamin Erlich"This beautiful book, edited by Javier deFelipe from the Instituto Cajal in Madrid, Spain, presents a collection of beautiful color drawings from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries illustrating the nervous system and its components, thus representing some characteristic examples of the early days of neuroscience research...This book does not only present the artistic products of early human and comparative neuroanatomy and neuropathology, but also provides an insight into the artistic skills of early neuroscientists in illustrating the fine structure of the nervous system...Thus, it informs about the fundamental concepts of early brain research and gives an inspired vision of science as an artistic and esthetic enterprise."--As reviewed by K. A. Jellinger in European Journal of Neurology"The book...contains two-hundred and eighty-two one-of-a-kind images, truly exquisite neuroscientific data. But this is not merely a picture book; there is an abundance of valuable text. The first part contains a detailed, well-told background and history of neuroscience and technology....I cannot imagine that a traditional textbook could do a better job of presenting this information...After their introduction, the images become more than aesthetic stimulation; they acquire special meaning because they represent the seeds of early anatomical discovery that grew into the field of modern neuroscience...I would rather not attempt to translate the unique images into descriptive approximations. I prefer instead to use my words to urge the reader to see for his or herself....It all amounts to an affirmation of the fundamental beauty of this holy human organ, something to never forget."--As reviewed by Ben Ehrlich in The Beautiful Brain: An Online Magazine"Javier DeFelipe should be congratulated on assembling such a beautiful book about the earliest microscopic investigations of the nervous system conducated at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century...This book is a wonderful addition to the library of any neuroscientist or neurologist. It is worthy of attention of artists who enjoy the beauty of the natural world."--The Lancet Neurology"...a rich treasury...I recommend this book unreservedly; and I thank Javier DeFelipe and Oxford University Press for giving us so much beauty."--Mitchell Glickstein, Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, University College London, reviewed in Brain"...exquisitely illustrated...This book represents the best collection of illustrations and succinct text about the history of discovery of microscopic neuroanatomy I have ever read. The book is attractively priced and should delight anyone with an interest in the nervous system. Encased within a striking dust jacket, sturdy spine, and boards, this book would make a perfect gift to graudating house staff."--Reviewed by Edward J. Fine, MD, FAAN in Neurology"Dr. DeFelipe's book is not just a cofee-table book for viewing century-old stunning pictorial images, it is a highly relevant text for today. Should you spend $75 on this book? If you do, I can guarantee that you will have hours of wonder, gazing at the illustrations and not believing what you see - that is until you next look down your microscope." -- Roy O. Weller, Emeritus Professor of Neuropathology, University of Southampton School of MedicineâThe book is an education in the fundamental concepts behind today's brain research as well as an inspired vision of science as an artistic and aesthetic enterprise. â - Gordon M. Shepherd, MD, DPhil, Department of Neurobiology, Yale Medical School, New Haven, CT"But, in writing in the early 1970's, Clarke and Dewhurst could not benefit from the visual revelations of tissue and brain imaging available to contemporary neuroscientists; as seen for example in ... Javier de Felipe's Cajal's Butterflies of the Soul (2010) in which images from the 'Benedictine, Black, and Colourful periods' frame a rich annotated display of exquisite microscopial depictions of the cellular architecture of the brain drawn by Golgi and Cajal who described nerve cells as having 'delicate and elegant forms, the butterflies of the soul'." --Brain: The Journal of Neurology

This book is a collector's item for those interested in cell structure and/or those who love beautiful line drawings and delicate paintings with exquisite detail. Plus, there is plenty of text to give the reader plenty of context for the plates. A unique book.

This book is incredible, a must for anyone who loves science and art. The pictures are gorgeous, and there's just the right amount of text to provide background without detracting from the art. I am thrilled to have found a great deal on it, as it is usually priced high, but it is worth it for a beautiful coffee table book, or just for reference and enjoyment.

The reproductions of neurological drawings in this book are stunning, and hard to find collected in one source like this. The text is fascinating, giving a brief overview of Cajal and other neurological pioneers, as well as a brief overview of the structures depicted. The quality is very high, the book is densely illustrated, and I feel it's worth the price to have this treasure of a book.

This book is a landmark for those studying the development of neurology; the beautiful original art provides so much insight to the complexity of the interconnections of the brain. This book definitely met my expectations.

Great for neuroscience nerds who also love art. I bought this for my wife as a gift after hearing of the artist on the Big Bang Theory.

Very pretty book

most suited gift from an art historian to a neurologist. requires a reader who can appreciate the medical illustration as an aesthetic object.

Perfect book with detailed illustrations of Cajal's work.
