This is among the top five history books I have ever read, and I like to read history. It has ample background to the battle without killing the reader with WAY too much information like so many history books. It almost read like an action novel. In fact, by the time I got to the battle I couldn't put it down! Like most Americans all I knew about the Battle of New Orleans was the old Johnny Horton song where the British ran off after being fired on a couple of times. I never had thought about the fact that the British soldiers were the survivors and victors over the Republican Army of Napoleon. They had beaten the best army in the world! In Louisiana they were facing a ragtag mix of frontiersmen, riverboat men, dock workers, prisoners, and even pirates. There is only one reason they were not demolished by the Brits--Andrew Jackson. Since I learned about the Trail of Tears I have never liked the man. He was a man of his times and had many flaws. After reading this book my opinion has changed completely. I still don't really like him, but I don't think there is a man on this earth that could have accomplished what he did in preparation and execution of this final chapter in the war. He was sick, had old wounds that troubled him, was hampered by lack of funding and had almost no trained soldiers to rely on. He accomplished the impossible, and with that he has my undying admiration and respect. He truly earned his nickname "Old Hickory." He was perhaps the best natural military leader in the history of this nation.

I enjoyed learning about this era in American history. I didn't realize the union was so weak after the American Revolution that we nearly lost our country back to the British. I finally understand the War of 1812. It was fun to learn how our national anthem fit into this story. I also learned what a wonderful man Andrew Jackson was - a true hero! I really appreciate how the New Orleans women's prayer vigil during the Battle of New Orleans is given credit for the miraculous victory. What a great American story!

Having received most of my "education" about the War of 1812 back in high school on ONE day, and from Johnny Horton's song, "....in 1814 we took a little trip...and fought the bloody British in the town of New Orleans..." A humorous little ditty - lots of fun, but not really a great place to get a realistic look at that time in our history. Anyway, as I said, having received my education thusly, I was totally enthralled by this very griltty recounting of Jackson and his amazing victory over not only the British, but forces in the U.S. arrayed against him, his own fragile health, and the topography of New Orleans itself. This is not to be missed!

I really enjoyed this book. It acquainted me with what was really happening in our country during this early period in U.S. history.It shows that Andrew Jackson was a lot more than the boisterous country bumpkin of his general reputation. The detailed progressoutlined of the battle of New Orleans is riveting. This book has sparked me into getting the 3 volume history of Andrew Jackson by Remini. I need to know a lot more about this man who probably, as pointed out in the book, saved the U.S. and allowed it to become the large continent covering country it is today.

If more history were related in this manner there would be more histoy buffs around...The facts, personalities and locations related accurately in a fasinating, very readable way. Jackson was a great man, certainly flawed but aren't we all? Judging people in history thru a 21st century lens is not always fair!!! Thanks for the read Bryan...

While this reader’s knowledge of the War of 1812 was limited to some battles in the Northeast and the burning of Washington D.C., by the British, and knew that Andrew Jackson was involved in some battle that saved New Orleans, he did not know any of the details. That has now been resolved following the reading of Brian Kilmeade’s and Don Yaeger’s 2017 “Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans”. Once again, these two authors have signaled out an important segment of American history.This story will allow one to see Andrew Jackson in a new light, perhaps in a more important role than when he was elected the 7th president of the United States. While serving as a Major General in the army of the United States, he built a plan of battle using a ragtag army of different backgrounds to go up to a well-trained British army in excess of 10,000 soldiers. He won the battle having killed nearly 3,000 British soldiers, while only loosing a handful of Americans.It was nice to see a European-like city, New Orleans, with only a small number of English speakers, become an American city with patriotism for their new country, as a result of the battle just outside the city. If the battle of New Orleans ended as a British victory, it is hard to envision the westward expansion that soon follow as well as the country the United States is today, because the British would have controlled the south and Spain controlling Florida.When the next long-distance road-trip is planned for a trip going east, a stop must be made in Nashville to pay respects to the late president and military officer at Hermitage, Jackson’s former estate where he is also buried. And now, when I think about the $20 bill carrying his photograph, that photo must remain, because America owes this hero the respect!

A great book to not only study the test- but actually learn the material. The author not only walks you through the question pool, but gives an in depth explanation of each answer. It is even better when coupled with the Audible audio version of the book.

If you seem your ham license this a good place to start. It was a very informativetext that gave me insight on what I didn't know and refreshed what I did. At somepoint I hope to be able to chat with the author over the air waves.

If your like me and prefer to "listen and see" to learn a subject matter instead of reading it, get the audio book and the kindle version to follow along. Once your done with the book take a sample test and I'm sure you will get a passing grade. I took the technicians exam and passed with 100% because of this book. Money well spent.

Great read. I had a basic understanding of most of the necessary topics, but the author of this book does a wonderful job explaining each of the concepts from which the individual questions are derived.Will invest in the same book format General class license when I get ready to take the test.

I have played and taught piano for over 50 years. I know that this method is highly esteemed, but I do not recommend it at all. I used to use it for teaching but the problem, in my opinion, is the placement of fingering numbers over every note. The students read the numbers, not the notes, and in doing so, fail to learn to read the notes themselves. Some of the information about phrasing and basic finger/wrist technique is helpful, and the retro illustrations are a bit of a hoot. Most of my students breeze through it easily, then Book Two arrives and the student is suddenly faced with the bitter reality that they must read notes and move their hands up and down the keyboard. It's overwhelming for many of them.If you decide to go with it, try to supplement it with some less heavily annotated material. There is much simple early music, for example, written in two parts. IMSLP offers much of this public domain material free of charge online.

The entire John Thompson series is as old as the hills, and I'm sure there are many piano teachers who would say that this series is outdated. There appear to be a lot of piano courses now that are specifically geared to different age groups. I have nothing against any of the other piano courses. But I am an older piano student with a goal to complete the entire John Thompson Course before I reach 70. I'll never be great, but this series pushes me to the max. And I appreciate the selection of songs that are presented in each book.Each student/teacher should negotiate the learning series that best fits the students learning style. For me, the John Thompson series is the core of my learning, and I supplement with books from other series. I also love the fact that I can listen to Alan Chan play every selection from the John Thompson series on You Tube. Listening to a quality rendition is most helpful in appreciating each piece before attempting to play the lesson.

Took up piano again and tried a couple of "adult" books but wasn't feeling the love. Finally remembered the name of these from my piano lessons 50 years ago. This series is the best, hands down.

I use this book for students after they have completed John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course book one (teaches 10 notes F bass to G treble). I also use JT Easiest Piano Course 2 for younger students. This books adds three lower bass notes first, CDE and, after those are mastered, adds ABC to the Treble. It teaches much technique and allows the student to read, understand and master the notes, not just memorize.

These are the best books for learning the piano. I have been teaching piano lessons for over 10 years and have not found a better book series. I highly recommend these books. They are more difficult than Alfred's and others, but the return is just not as great with the other books. I have used several series and always come back to John Thompson. It cannot be beat!

I am 67 years old, and have spent a few years learning to play the piano. Learning comes slow to those of us who have so many old habits that now prove obstacles to new learning & must be revised to accommodate this learning.I teased my wonderfully patient teacher by chiding her for promoting me from kindergarten to third grade after only six years of study & practice. She appropriately told me I was rapidly progressing into piano.The book is very well presented and explains things like style, mood, interpretation, and form. The selections are all fun after appropriate practice and some helpful additional instruction. (One would likely be lost with this book not knowing a host of other technical details about printed music.)Unfortunately the author only mentions the more technique-oriented and/or technical challenges one faces at this time in one's study. His mention is only a paragraph aimed at selling another of his books on that topic. It is a mystery only booksellers can answer why he needed another book to contain his subject and mine instead of putting it all into one collection. A glimpse at the back cover illustrates the depths of this challenge: the author there offers another seven "third grade" music books.The book is also "modern" in the quaintly academic sense that it contains music from what the academics call the modern centuries (C16-C20); according to their preferred doctrines we now live in the "post modern" era which began sometime in the late 19th or early 20th centuries, the precise moment of its birth as yet unsettled.That is not necessarily wrong; we all need orientation from the past. But it is important also to not get lost in the past.

Oldies, goodies. Thompson books begin with fingerings and five-finger hand positions, and some students have difficulty progressing to note reading. The books advance steadily and quickly from 1 to 5. Excellent literature, including some information about the composers.

I was brought up on John Thompson and am now using it to teach my piano students. Covers EVERYTHING. I add scale practice by Hanson as well. My students do very well with it!

Kevin McKenna is Chancellor and Director of Legal Services for the Diocese of Rochester, as well as a member of both the Canon Law Society of America and the Canadian Canon Law Society; he has also written books such as A Concise Guide to Catholic Social Teaching,Concise Guide to Your Rights in the Catholic Church,Church Finance Handbook,You Did It for Me: Care of Your Neighbor as a Spiritual Practice, etc.He wrote in the Preface to this 2000 book, "[This book] is an effort to present a compact, usable reference guide in some of the major areas of canon law that affect primarily the pastor, parochial vicar, deacon, and pastoral associate, as well as a variety of pastoral agents now working in the church... This book is an effort to distill into a practical format the myriad laws contained in the Code of Canon Law with an emphasis on the more practical areas such as the sacraments, declarations of nullity, and consultative bodies... It is intended as an easy-to-use reference guide for pastoral ministers, providing a quick summary in outline form of the major topical areas in canon law... and thereby answering some questions that often come up in the day-to-day life of the average pastoral minister." (Pg. 14)He states, "A person who is in a marriage which the church cannot recognize as VALID due to the presence of an IMPEDIMENT such as a prior bond is still eligible for admittance into the RCIA program. However, before receiving baptism, it would be necessary that the catechumen's marriage situation be resolved (e.g., obtaining a declaration of nullity) so that the person be properly disposed and able to celebrate the sacraments of initiation. It is therefore most important that parish staff interview potential catechumens before they proceed too far into the program so that the person with an invalid marriage is aware of this potential difficulty and so the staff may assist the catechumen in whatever canonical procedures may be necessary before the person is initiated into the church." (Pg. 33-34)He notes, "sacred ministers cannot refuse the sacraments to those who ask for them at appropriate times, are properly disposed,and are not prohibited from receiving them... However... those who are excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty or obstinately persist in grave sin are not to be admitted to the eucharist. The Code does not overly restrict access to the eucharist. When admission to the eucharist must be restricted, the law would insist that very serious reasons be present, since such exclusion would be denying a fundamental right." (Pg. 44)He observes, "Many pastoral ministers believe that living together as a couple before marriage makes a couple ineligible to be married in the church, since in such a situation the couple would not be properly disposed to receive the sacrament of marriage. The new catechism, in describing 'trial marriage,' says those who engage in premature sexual relations with the intention of getting married later enter a relationship that can 'scarcely ensure mutual sincerity and fidelity...' 'Human love does not tolerate "trial marriages." It demands a total and definitive gift of persons to one another.' It is only the ordinary who can legitimately prohibit the marriage of a couple within his jurisdiction, and only in a particular case---and only for a time, for a serious cause, and only as long as that cause exists." (Pg. 75)He states, "Contrary to prior legislation, it is now the Catholic party who, before entering into marriage with a member of another church or ecclesial community, must obtain the permission of the local ordinary by making certain declarations about his or her faith... The Catholic party must declare that he or she is prepared to remove dangers of falling away from the faith and make a sincere promise to do all in his or her power to have all children baptized and brought up in the Catholic Church. The other party must be informed of these promises made by the Catholic." (Pg. 78)This book does an excellent job of not only outlining the Code, but also focusing its attention on the most "crucial" sections, in the minds of most people.

As the Parish Secretary in a Roman Catholic Church, I am surprised at how mamy people think that the nice lady answering the phone could answer questions about Canon Law. In my quest to serve the parishioners, my bosses (priests), deacons, seminarians, and the Sisters in our Convent, I decided to buy this book. It provides simple explanations for complex questions and situations so that I am able to at least direct people to the right place or help them formulate the questions they need to ask a priest or deacon.I think it's a great book for any of those religious listed above as well, for quick reference when dealing with the most common situations: marriage and annulment, baptisms, adult confirmation. And provides a way to teach these concepts to people going through RCIA. I let everyone use this copy, I might have to splurge on an extra copy.

Canon law is a snap for Canon Lawyers. However, there are many people who work in a parish who are not conversant in this mysterious subject, but are surrounded by people, things, and circumstances which pose questions that can only be answered by Canon Law. Although each diocese provides guidelines for many things like requirements for baptism and confirmation, or who can and who cannot be sponsors for these sacraments, sometimes things get a bit more complicated and when the pastor or priest is not around and the staff does not always know where to find those answers. There are the perennial issues like: when a dispensation or special permission must be obtained to perform a wedding. Going to the actual Code of Canon Law: Latin-English Edition, or using the New Commentary on the Code of Canon Law or the older versions: Code of Canon Law: A Text and Commentary and Code of Canon Law a Text and Commentary, Study Edition, is more frightening for the untrained staff than helpful.This is a great tool to keep close by in any parish office. It is written by a Canon Lawyer for everyday people. Its Table of Contents provides easy entry to the subject for which you are looking for answers. It offers information primarily on the seven Sacraments, but also on parishes, the diocese, annulments, property and things like the obligations and rights of all Catholics. As the product Description says, it "puts the answers right at your fingertips."Although this may prove indispensible for a parish staff, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about Church Law. It makes a good textbook for a class. It is a welcome addition to anyone's library who just wants to know more about how the Church administrates itself. It also provides actual Code #'s, should one want to delve into the Code itself.

Speaking as a Canon Lawyer, this is just the book parish priests who have not had much training in Canon Law while in Seminary. This book just might be better than the text books they give Seminarians as things are explained in such a way that they can understand those Canons they would have to deal with at the parish.

As "heavy" as the content sounds, the writing is fluid, logical, and interesting. How did we, Sapiens, as a species come to dominate the planet? How, for example, did we extinguish the Neanderthals, they of the bigger brains and far more brawn? It started with the first of the revolutions discussed, the Cognitive and our ability to share fictitious myths and realities that do not exist, along with a penchant for gossip. Other revolutions followed, the agricultural, and the scientific. Interesting observation that for billions of years the world changed by the slow process of evolution with little indication that there was any role played by "intelligent design" by in the last few hundred years, many changes have been caused by our own "intelligent" design. By many measures we have made enormous "progress", but I enjoyed the discussion as to whether this has made us happier. Also entranced by the discussion of "The End of Homo Sapiens" and the "Animal that Became a God" and the comment "Is there anything more dangerous than dissatisfied and irresponsible gods who don't know what they want?" Enjoy the book and prepare to think. A tip of the hat also for the great production quality of the book with clay coated pages to permit the reproduction of quality images the tome itself has a bit of heft.

This explains how people could cooperate in groups larger than 150, giving them a military and security advantage, and encouraging specialization which eventually gave them a technological advantage.Moreover, Harari claims (assumes) all these later sapiens were genetically identical, and that the variations in societies are purely cultural, i.e. inter-subjective realities. He presents history as an erratic evolution toward global unity, which is essentially demanded by the nature of inter-subjective realities, requiring belief of all those in mutual frequent contact, but he doesn't say how.In fact, Harari presents only anecdotal evidence for his claim. He presents no empirical studies regarding the flexibility of humans toward inter-subjective realities, and no mathematical models of its development, evolutionary advantage, or stability. He describes the scientific method as an important development, and requires it to include both mathematical models and verification of them. But he does not use either in his treatise. Thus he presents an important and interesting hypothesis, but not in a scientific manner. He makes not even suggestions as to how to further formulate or verify it as a scientific theory. Perhaps he is trapped in the inter-subjective reality of history as liberal arts, not science.The term "intersubjective" does exist in the literature of psychology and philosophy, primarily as a synonym for "agreement," but there is no agreement about its definition (Gillespie and Cornish 2009, Journal for Theory of Social Behavior) state:"The concept of intersubjectivity is used widely, but with varying meanings. Broadly speaking, we take intersubjectivity to refer to the variety of possible relations between people’s perspectives. If we take social life to be founded on interactions then intersubjectivity should be a core concept for the social sciences in general and understanding social behaviour in particular. Perhaps because of this broad relevancy research has been fragmented and at least six definitions are in circulation. Most simplistically, intersubjectivity has been usedto refer to agreement in the sense of having a shared definition of an object."The biggest complaint I have about Harari is that he does not distinguish between his opinion and facts, nor explain the background of how he arrived at the theory of inter-subjectivity. The study of the evolution of cooperation is a hot topic, with political scientists, biologists, mathematicians and even physicists all having theories, and much data collected and many math models developed. It is apparent Harari is aware of this, but does not tell us how his theory fits in. I can only conclude he finds his powers of popular persuasion greater than his powers of scientific persuasion and critical analysis, so he writes a long book instead of a focused research paper.By the way, you can find excellent video summaries and reviews of this book on the web, and even a "summary" for sale as an eBook. I originally got interested from the video summary.Near the end Harari reports on happiness research. In this section of the book he takes exception to his usual approach, giving us descriptions of studies and names of researchers so we can trace where these conclusions come from. The book is worth reading for this section.Occasionally Harari gets facts wrong. You won't realize this unless you have investigated the matter separately. I noticed it because his description of the origin of the caste system in India was wrong, according to current research.Harari tries to present himself as outside modern factions (or inter-subjective realities), such as nature vs. nurture, liberalism vs. conservatism, etc. But without conscious explication, he suffuses his book with the assumption that any modern human if taken from birth is equally at home in any of the current or historical inter-subjective realities. He does not propose or even consider experiments to determine culture-vs-genetics. So he proposes this important genetic ability evolved in a small population on a single continent between 130kya and 70kya, but that no differentiating evolution has occurred since then.The question of whether the degree or style of inter-subjectivity is as universal as he implies is important for several reasons. Harari proposes the world is "different" since 1945, with no war between major powers, no more empires expanding by territorial acquisition. He suggests some reasons for this (cost of nuclear war, for example) which are unverified. His book was completed in 2014 before Russia claimed parts of Ukraine and China claimed the entire South China Sea. If inter-subjective capacity is universal, then this situation is likely unstable. People could quit believing it at any moment, and the world could return to any state that it has been in historically. If inter-subjective capacity is not identical in everyone, then it might make a great deal of difference which cultures dominate, even if through historical accident. See for example Boyd and Richerson 2009 Culture and the Evolution of Human Cooperation.So, it is a book full of powerful ideas, often with carefully balanced arguments on both sides, but beware of accepting the background assumptions without critical thinking, or you will just fall into the latest meme.

I bought the book based on high rating but was disappointed. The beginning part was ok but later I felt more and more not reading actual (scientific) facts but only the author's own opinions REPEATEDLY which were presented in a bad way. I tried to continue to finish the book but it was not an easy task. Anyway, not a good book for me,

Never before have I reviewed a book after 2300 others have done the same. Who's going to read 2300 reviews and who will read this? Surely a waste of time for a lot of people including me. Now that I am past that let me state that Harari gives a heckeva good read. This is not the usual rise and fall of empires and kingdoms but a broad ranging overview of how we got here. Parts of it were downright fascinating such as "imagination" being a keystone to human activity, e.g. corporations, money, and religion.Something I found really different and pleasing was his discussion of things where he had no real answer. In the case of all cultures being patriarchal he gives three or four possible reasons. That's good enough for me as there is still no real answer. I find that fair and enlightening. He also does something different as he uses the pronoun "she" throughout the book instead of the previously required male pronoun. Finally he keeps touching on the fact that animals have paid a terrible price for the rise of sapiens. From hunter-gatherer days to the factory farms of today they have suffered. He's right. Incidentally our family has a farm background and I eat no chicken, turkey, pork, or beef. Ever been in a confinement barn?Now I didn't give the book five stars because he makes positive references to the misguided but widely read Jared Diamond. He borrows a fair amount from Diamond, for example, in that hunter-gatherers were happier than folks today. Let me emphasize that on this snowy March day the cat and I are both glad we don't need to go out and scavenge something off the frozen earth.Finally, beware of the paper back edition. It has incredibly cheap paper and tiny print. If you purchase the book look for a hard cover. I now consign this review to oblivion. . .still I liked the book.

Gombrich serves as a fantastic tour-guide through the ages of art. In simple language, he helps us appreciate the phenomenon of art, its grand triumphs, its unique personalities, its diverse aims. A wonderful book to read and re-read to survey some of humanity's greatest artistic achievements across 5,000 years of history. The full-color illustrations are a great aid to the book, and it's much appreciated that Gombrich refers to the illustrated art throughout so we learn to see art as an interconnected, progressive tradition (Gombrich also acknowledges that, while generally useful, a single story of art can be a misleading oversimplification). One might be quick to fault the book for what it lacks--it stops after about mid-20th century, it heavily favors Western creations--but for an accessible introductory text, it doesn't get better than this.

This is a monumental work. After touring the Louvre, the Orsay, the Met and others I realized that I was just an art tourist. I'd wander around and enjoy what I was looking at but lacking any understanding of it. So, I bought this book to learn the basic history of art. Now, I need to return to the museums to give a new look at what I've seen before using my new knowledge. One thing I loved about it was discovering so many artists that I either didn't know about or didn't really appreciate before. I like the way he presents each period and school as building on what came before. But if Renaissance was the epitome of perspective and natural anatomy, it doesn't mean that we can't appreciate what came before it.The book is 600 pages with lots of pictures so he is covering about 5,000 years in about 90,000 words which means he understandably breezes through parts, leaving important artists and pieces unmentioned and not giving a very deep understanding of the social and political environment which spawned them. What I did was to read in front of my computer so that as he mentioned things, I could consult wikipedia or other sources for further information. I often wandered off reading of the Franco-Prussian War or the Annunciation but it all broadened my knowledge and I could also look at other works of an important artist.As it is a survey work, I would recommend reading further about periods or artists which interest you but you will at least have a fledgling knowledge to begin.

all his books feel like friends to me, I am always sad one is ending. a very sweet and comprehensive review of the history of art for beginners and everyone else, and for all ages. he doesn't only tell the history, but the story of the evolution of the art, but makes it brief enough that it never gets boring. the relevant and high-quality colored images are specifically helpful and makes the book even more enjoyable.

If you've ever wanted to take an art history course, without sitting in a classroom this book is for you. The text is readable and not pedantic. The illustrations of the art are wonderful and some fold out so you can see the details of the work. It's a huge book, so I'm going through it bit by bit. A great addition to my art library.

I've read a few "art 101" style histories, and this stands out as by far the best. The problem with most comprehensive histories is that each chapter is usually written by a different author. Consequently, they end up reading like encyclopedias rather than smooth narratives. Volumes like Gardner and Janson are big, impressive, authoritative, and richly illustrated, but reading them cover to cover tends to be a painful and boring labor. Not so with Gombrich, whose "Story of Art" truly reads like a story. Each chapter progresses nicely from the last, making reference to material already covered. The 400+ full page illustrations mean you know exactly what he's describing.It's worth noting that, with the exception of one chapter on Islamic and Chinese art, Gombrich covers western art almost exclusively. While this might be unsatisfying to some, I think sacrificing comprehensiveness is worth maintaining narrative flow.My only complaint is that all the illustrations are lumped together in the back of the pocket edition. This necessitates constant flipping back and forth while reading. I suppose the publisher had to do this to keep the price low and the size small, but it becomes tiresome pretty quickly.

Such a great introduction to art! If you are even the slightest bit interested in art history, read this book. Actually, read it even if you aren't. I read this book because I didn't understand why people made such a big deal about famous paintings and artists. (I'm more of a music/writing person.) This book helped me begin to appreciate the kind of art you see in museums. This book has truly enriched my life.A few words on the pocket paperback edition. It is a gorgeously constructed book, with a matte jacket and two place-holding ribbons. The first section is the text, printed on bible-thickness paper in a nice typeface. The second part contains high-quality (but tiny) images of all the works referenced in the text, in the order that they are referenced. If possible, I would suggest buying one of the full-sized editions so you don't have to flip back and forth, and so that the images will be larger. However, those editions are a bit heavy to tote around all day.
