I just finished Kristin Louise Duncombe's "Five Flights Up," about following her Médecins Sans Frontières doctor husband to Paris and then Lyon after a long stint in Kenya, which she described in her previous book, "Trailing." Her new book, like her first memoir, was very well-written and -edited, but one of the things that fascinated me about it was her description of the lives of the upper class women whom she meets in Lyon in the upper class neighborhood where she and her husband somehow land. It was a peek into a slice of French life that I'd never noted before, despite all the reading I've done on France and its people and culture.Duncombe is frank, witty, and candidly discusses her marriage and sex. She shares details about life as an expat, not quite fitting in, and the impact that has on her children who are French but never completely. It's a great story and I was sorry to see it end.

Kristin Duncombe's second installment of her life as the wife of a Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) doctor was equally as interesting as her first, "Trailing". Met with the opportunity to save her marriage and move from Africa to Paris opens the door to a new and more fulfilling life. She lives in Paris for a number of years working as a counselor and repairing her marital relationship as well as adding another child to the family. When her husband is given an opportunity for a career move to Lyon, it becomes obvious that she struggles with letting go of her life in Paris. She continues to commute to and from Lyon to Paris to continue her practice, while her children adapt to their new home and schools. Kristin has a wonderful sense of humor and is blatantly honest about her feelings. One feels quite at home with her writing style.

I just finished reading and reviewed, Five Flights Up: Sex, Love, and Family, from Paris to Lyon by Kristin Louise Duncombe, and I found this memoir a raw, honest, and rather funny read. Since the synopsis can be read online, I will go directly to my review. It is difficult enough, to follow a spouse and move to a new city, and this memoir certainly is highly insightful of how life is in France. So many transitions must be made, and Duncombe brings out this reality for anyone in a similar situation. Living as an ex-pat with her ex-pat (and different culture) husband and moving to France; makes this memoir a “must read” from just those words. Duncombe tells it how it is, yet in her intense honesty, she brings forth so many funny and poignant stories in the process. The storytelling flows easily and the edits are professional, city descriptions are wonderful, and the characters spring to life, yet Duncombe’s raw honesty stands out as her marriage starts to fall apart and the reader go through the ups and downs along the way. I haven’t read Duncombe’s prequel memoir, but this story is a great memoir on its own. Duncombe’s raw honesty in writing about her trials and tribulations, marriage and sex, living in Lyon, the impact on her children, and life while living in a upper class neighborhood, was both funny and filled with “oh no” moments. Thank you, Kristin Louise Duncombe, for this beautiful memoir.

"Having" to move from Paris to Lyon sounds like a problem a lot of us would like to have, but the genius of this engaging memoir is that we really get where the author is coming from--as well as going to! Loved the vivid descriptions of her life in Paris, a city I know well, and of Lyon, a city I know not at all. Loved the apartment(s), food, new friends, old friends, marital jockeying, and career restructuring. But the big appeal here is the universality of the author's theme. Leaving behind all that you know to face the unknown is really the story of life itself. I enjoyed sharing this particular version of that story.

I read this book in practically one sitting. It is that good, that engaging.Kristin's prose is so friendly and engaging, while making profound and universal observations on balancing womanhood in your 40's.Did I mention that Kristin is funny, too?You should read it, as well as Kristin's previous book, Trailing, both available on Amazon.Kristin is so refreshingly honest and vulnerable, without any shred of moral superiority -- a definite down in the trenches book, with the strength of a woman who is willing to brutally self-assess and change both herself, and her view on life.

This is a very special book and I highly recommend it for anyone who has been an ex-pat in a foreign country and gone through the very confusing and frustrating process of culture shock and has travelled and would like to know what life is like in Paris from the honest and intelligent eyes of a highly articulate mother of two, married to a doctor working for World Health Organization who has experienced multi-moves in her childhood and adult life.Five Flights Up is highly informative, easily readable and once you start it, you will be compelled to read it to the end. Kristin writes in a style that is highly graphic and hypnotic and I felt like I was re-living what she had gone through. She is also very funny and I found myself laughing at many points in the book as I followed her through the various situations and crises that she and her 2 children experienced and was amazed at the creative solutions that she found to her dilemmas. This book is compelling reading and I highly recommend it for readers of all ages!

What a great read. This memoir about a woman leaving the security of her life in Paris to move to Lyon when her husband gets a new job there is heartfelt, insightful, and very, very funny. Duncombe's writing has a strong voice, and her honesty about her struggles with craving financial and professional independence while also striving to figure out how those desires fit into her life as a wife and mother, are compelling and relatable. She also touches on themes of cultural identity, the yearning to fit in, and what exactly constitutes "home," all of which resonated with me, as I also grew up moving from country to country and never having a strong sense of place. Highly recommended.

The Stone Boudoir: Travels Through the Hidden Villages of Sicily

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Maggio opens her tale with a memory of sitting under her grandparents' grape arbor in Carldstadt, New Jersey, wondering if their memories of Sicily were hard-wired into her consciousness. These essays, written over many visits, illuminate tiny Sicilian towns with glorious names: Polizzi Generosa (Martin Scorsese's father was born there); Catania, where men celebrate the feast of Sant'Agata, who was martyred by having her breasts cut off; Sperlinga, where generations have lived in apartments cut in caves that Maggio compares to hobbit-holes. Maggio writes pristine prose unsullied by prettiness or sentimentality. She finds a number of women unencumbered by marriage--like the twin pharmacists, Antonietta and Rosaria--who accompany her, stay with her, or simply allow her to view their lives. She writes of the clothed, dessicated corpses in a crypt in Palermo; of watching Etna's lava flow engulf a flowering pear tree in Zafferana Etnea; and of Santa Margherita, her grandparents' town, destroyed in an earthquake in 1968. She adores Sicily, taking as her metaphor the living stone from which the island takes its building material, the taste of its water, the color of its contours. With Mary Taylor Simeti's On Persephone's Island (1994), this memoir offers an austerely voluptuous pleasure for anyone seeking the heart of Sicily. #1,291,906 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I like everything about this book except the title. It's heartwarming without being sappy, and true…. so true.I am of Sicilian descent and have just returned from a 2 week trip to Italy, 2/3 of which was in Sicily. There are people in the USA who still live and think in ways that the author so beautifully describes. We were all over Palermo, Mondello and the south of Agrigento. All true, so true.If you have no interest in Sicily, this is not for you. But, if you do, this book will make your experience even better.

I am a sucker for arm chair travel books living vicariously through the journeys of others. I loved this book, it was well written and explored a lesser known part of sicily, one distinct from the usual tourist towns which is what made it such a delight. A good travel book makes one yearn to follow in the footsteps of the author who has brought each tiny village and each character within the village to such vivid life.I agree with one of the other reviewers that it would have been helpful to have a map in the book to guide one as I kept resorting to Google maps to determine where in sicily we were just to get a sense of place.Other than that we'll worth a read.

I absolutely loved this book. I am of Sicilian ancestry and I found Maggio capturing the mountain villages and the people so poignant. There was a lot familiar to me in the superstitions, the culture and traditions and even the expressions. I just visited Sicily but another region from which Maggio writes. None-the-less, the Stone Boudoir had helped to make this trip extra special. I highly recommend this book for all readers, not just Sicilians or potential tourists. It's a beautifully written cultural and historical golden egg. Enjoy!

This is the fifth copy I've purchased of this book. I've read many travel memoirs about Italy but none compares to this one. Theresa Maggio was not a casual tourist. She actually immersed herself into the culture, learned the language, and lived within the stone walls she describes so vividly. Theresa embraces the lives of the people she introduces the reader to and takes you inside of their homes and gives you a peek of their daily rhythm of life. My grandparents were also born in the mountains of Sicily. In 2004 I moved back to their homeland and had similar experiences. My memoir of these experiences will be published in the Spring of 2013 on Amazon - My Roots Are Showing.

What an interesting book and so well written. The author weaves a wonderful story of Sicily and my grandparents also came from Sicily, so her story interested me so much. If you have any interest in Italy, history or meeting interesting people, this is the book for you. Enjoy her powerful story.

I am planning a trip to Sicily and reading everything i can get my hands on about Sicily in preparation. As an American of Sicilian descent I greatly enjoyed Ms Maggio's experiences and descriptions of life in the hill towns of Sicily. It explained some of the odd behaviors of my own family, such as the obsession with a clean house! It is not a travel book per se, but I think it will enhance your experience if you are planning a trip and if you are a descendant of Sicilian immigrants you will find it interesting to see what conditions perhaps prompted many to immigrate.

This was a very well-written book about the author's travels to small Sicilian towns. After reading this I am now going to read more about the history of Sicily. Highly recommended.

I'm half Italian, half Sicilian, and I've spent most of my life traveling and learning about mainland Italy. I always wanted to visit Sicily, and this book allowed me to see my Motherland through Maggio's experiences there. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I felt like I was there with her, and it left me with a better understanding of the island, the people, and the traditions.I was actually reading the book while on vacation to Malta, and my husband, noticing my interest in the book, booked a day trip to Sicily on my 25th birthday!

Review

"High Adventure is a well-loved classic of 20th-century mountaineering, written in the first full flush of achievement by one of that century's truly heroic figures."--Jan Morris, author of Coronation Everest and Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere"A gem of a book.... At no point is there any deviation from the same honesty of purpose and simple love of mountaineering which brought him, with those famous 'few more whacks,' to the top."--Times Literary Supplement (on the 1955 edition)"Unquestionably the best account of the lot.... I believe this to be one of the small number of mountaineering books certain to survive."--The Observer (on the 1955 edition)

Book arrived in good shape as described. It was a very detailed account of the Everest climb and others in the prior two years. Some have criticized Hillary for his use of the term "coolies" but I didn't get the sense that he used it derogatorily. I think it was the term used for "porter" in those days. I trekked in the Everest region in 1978 and was present while Hillary worked on the hospital he set up. A sherpa acquaintance told me that he was very highly regarded by the Sherpa people because of his continued assistance to the region after the climb. This book would be of greatest interest to readers who have some familiarity with climbing and glacier exploration. Otherwise, it might be a bit tedious and hard to relate to, due to the detailed descriptions of the climbing.

When I was eleven years old, I read High Adventure. And decided that I would also be an adventurer. I have been that and more.Thank You Sir Edmund Hillery! The funny thing is that people probably eschew this book, thinking it's written in "old fashioned" terminology or it's "just another summit book."Nothing could be further from the truth. Hillary's enthusiasm for mountain climbing punctuates every page (literally; I don't think there's a page in the book that lacks an exclamation point). He talks about the technicalities of climbing with ease and in accessible language, and he regards the mountains as beings in their own right, worthy of respect and awe.In addition, the edition of the book I read, despite being a paperback, was illustrated not only with line drawings reminiscent of Arthur Ransome's books, but with simple maps and diagrams showing exactly where the various glaciers are or the path through the Khombu icefall (not nearly as simple as later books/authors make it seem!). These diagrams add even more personality to an already-fascinating book, and give the reader a real sense of what these explorers faced. This is an enthralling book that goes along at a great pace and it was definitely over too soon. Give it a try: it's worth at least a dozen of the whiny 70's mountaineering books!

Excellent first hand account of the first successful summit of Mt. Everest from the man that did it. Very interesting and engaging. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the 1953 ascent of Everest. A very enjoyable read!

This is Hillary's engaging first person account of his Everest Summit.Overall impression: The first and latter chapters are by far the best. The second and third chapters contain surveying narratives which didn't engage me all that much. I read the book in two days whenever I had a moment to read it... I had it with me at all times because I was dying to read the next page. Great book. What I loved about it: By the time you get to the final two chapters, you feel like you are summitting with them. I knew they would make it, of course, but while you are reading you have this suspention of reality and there are moments where you just don't see how they can possibly make it. The description of what he was thinking in these unchartered regions kept me glued! Also, the description and map of the Khumbu icefall left my jaw dropped. These were very brave men! What I didn't like about it: The descriptions of the treks between the camps on everest (back and forth, back and forth) tended to blend together. I felt like he could have cut some of that narrative (i.e. going back for more supplies, checking on people, etc..)Conclusion: You won't regret buying the book. I can't help but think his goal was to include everything he could remember just to get it documented, even if some of the information doesn't necessarily advance the story you were expecting to read. It's 70% thrill and 30% redundancy or extranias information. Still a great book. Here is one thing that nags me though. THE BIG QUESTION: Hillary was competitive. He admits he was happyt to hear that the Swiss team did not summit. He was not assigned to be the first of his team to summit, yet he does not tell us he was dissapointed by that decision! C'mon! He MUST have been. Also, when the first team failed, he didn't admit that a part of him was happy that he had his shot to be the first! That seems like normal human behavior and also fitting with his previous comments. The fact that he didn't talk about his emotions during those events tells me he doesn't want to come off as a bad sport.Add the book the your library!

This book was very well written. It is an exciting and detailed account of Hillary’s Mt. Everest expeditions and his successful climb to the ‘top of the world’.

A .good read

This is a good account from Hillary about the day to day struggles of the first ascent of Everest. He tells of the preparations and equipment they had to work with in the 1950's to summit hard and high mountains and of course at that time it was unheard of not to use oxygen.

What a wonderful read! I can't claim to be a full Little Women fanatic, but I did love the book as a kid. As an adult, I really enjoyed this retelling! How wonderful to have the same themes of family and sisterhood set in a context of current day. More specifically, I loved that it was in Brooklyn, that it's a blended family, that it's an interracial family, that it deals with modern day topics, etc. In a world where so many books seem to erase the existence of working class people, people of color, LGBTQ people, the military, etc., it was refreshing to read a story that acknowledged and celebrated that those things exist! The only bits I didn't like were at the beginning where there is some (what felt to me) forced exposition about how the family came to be formed. My guess is that this may have been to cater to a YA audience; myself, I think some illustrated endpapers or pre-story panels with a family tree might have done the job without being quite so heavy handed. But after that initial part, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.Without spoiling anything, I can say there were pages that made me grin and others that got me all teary. I read the book in a day, and immediately handed it off to my wife to be read. I'm excited that the book exists, excited to have read and enjoyed it, and excited for the day when my two kids come across it on our bookshelf and ask to read it.

I purchased this book for my 10 year old daughter. She is in the 4th grade and doesn’t like reading tradional novels but loves graphic novels. I loved the original little women and thought that it would be an accurate retelling like the babysitters club graphic novels which are her favorite. There weren’t any reviews because it was so new so I didn’t realize there was a child coming out as gay in the book geared toward elementary age kids!!! It did have a great storyline and she enjoyed the book but discussion of sexual orientation isn’t appropriate for young children!! This should be geared toward middle school children.

As a fan of Little Women I wanted to read this. I loved the LGBTQ rep. The art style is amazing and adorable. I recommend this for anyone who has read Little Women and those that are looking for a quick Graphic Novel to read.

But I really liked this book. I'm a traditionalist. I first read Little Women in a beautiful hardcover edition that my mother had been given for her 12th birthday - in 1932. I also loved the film starring Katharine Hepburn as Jo March. The updates in this version were very thoughtfully done, and with a little effort one can follow the trajectories of the stories from the original and gain new insights. It might be a tad too happy ending (*spoiler alert*, Beth does die in the original), but I was willing to go along.

I never write reviews but I had to for this book. Only 1 other review? It needs far more!I am a middle school reading and writing teacher, and as you may know, there are some crappy books out there for teens- badly written, badly illustrated, trite and predictable... this book had none of that. I will be honest, I have never read Little Women (but I will now). I loved this book for many more reasons. A blended family was presented wonderfully as real people. I got caught up in their drama... (how much more can they take?) I loved the relationships as they were presented and the characters as they changed. I liked that the authors didn’t make light of poverty, as seen in so many other books and movies (I.e. “We have money but they have each other and that makes life great!”) Let’s be honest, life can suck if you’re poor, but the book did strike a good job showing these things are not opposites.Yes, some of the exposition was clunky times, and I am not sure the skin colors stayed constant throughout the book (which was a shame), but the characters drew me in. They seemed real... Black characters seemed Black, gay characters seemed gay, poor people seemed poor, everyone acted their age, unlike some movies where straight, white, rich actors play everything. As an adult who has read/watched numerous stories, I could see a couple plot twists a mile away (this will happen to her, that will happen to him...) but thoroughly enjoyed not only the journey, but the ending, which was near perfect. Not every plot line was wrapped up neatly, but that’s life, isn’t it? I would have been disappointed in this book if they had been. While I was a little dismayed at some clunky exposition (“This is Jo talking!”) I was thrilled at some history and other tidbits thrown in. I certainly didn’t know about the Black Panther/LGBTQ connection! And the writer certainly knew their musical history. As to the art, kids should love it. A hint of manga, a hint of cartoon, a hint of realism... the artist obviously thought about where the characters were located and how they interacted and moved from A to B, unlike some comic books today. No page, no panel was wasted.I want a class set. I really do.

I LOVED this re-telling of Little Women. The girls' characters were SPOT.ON. and I got the same roller coaster of emotions while reading this as when I read the original. It's a wonderful representation of a blended, bi-racial family, living in a multi-cultural neighborhood in Brooklyn. The love between the family members is so supportive and amazing. Please, please, please don't let negative reviews based on bigoted opinions affect your opinion of this novel. Even though it is about girls, I'm going to try to get my 11yo son to read it because it will spark SO many great discussions between us about so many modern-day issues.
