Review

"Thoughtful."--New York Times Book Review"An impassioned call to action to preserve the best of traditional newspaper journalism."--The San Francisco Chronicle"Penetrating analysis of an industry in turmoil."--The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette"In a style both compellingly personal and fully professional, Jones provides a concise social history of news, ethics and First Amendment issues. He then grapples with some fundamental questions. Is news, as presented by professional journalists, as essential to democracy as we tell ourselves? Can it survive on its own in a marketplace where the advertising subsidy is waning and the accompanying entertainment segments are being unbundled and peddled separately?" --American Journalism Review"Alex Jones's Losing the News is an important book. It is insightful and highly readable, at a level only a great journalist and master storyteller such as Jones could achieve with this subject. This isn't a book for or about just journalists and their profession. It's must reading for all Americans who care about our country's present and future. Analysis, commentary, scholarship and excellent writing, with a strong, easy-to-follow narrative about why you should care, makes this a candidate for one of the best books of the year."--Dan Rather"No one knows more about journalism than Alex Jones. No one watches it more scrupulously. No one cares more deeply for its future. Losing the News also proves that no one writes of the subject more persuasively or more beautifully. Journalism could have no surer champion."--Roger Rosenblatt"Drawing on his unique experiences as a prize-winning reporter, director of the major center on politics and the press, and fourth generation of a newspaper-owning family, Alex Jones provides an authoritative account of why journalism is vital, how it has lost its bearings, and which can be done to reinvigorate this essential foundation of a democratic society."--Howard Gardner, Harvard University"Losing the News reviews the role of news media in a democracy to set the stage for chapters assessing particular aspects. These include discussion of the fragile First Amendment, objectivity's last stand, media ethics, the curious story of news, the crumbling role of traditional newspapers, the newer media, and what can - and should - happen." --Communication Booknotes Quarterly

The subtitle of this impassioned essay -- " The Future of the News that Feeds Democracy" -- tells half the story, one that's familiar to any alert reader of today's major newspapers. The other half of the story, equally familiar, is about how the Internet is undermining the newspaper industry and, in the process, steadily replacing the world as we know it with a frighteningly unknown future.Alex Jones, a Pulitzer-Prize winning author, comes to these themes honestly as the scion of a small-town Tennessee newspaper family. It's no wonder he feels threatened. In all fairness, there is considerable reason for apprehension over the decline of America's major newspapers. Reflecting shrunken profits, repeated staff layoffs, closed news bureaus, and greater reliance on syndicated material, the nation's once-fat dailies are slimming down at a terrifying pace. In place of the papers' often earnest efforts at "objectivity," we are increasingly basing our views on the unedited diatribes to be found on the likes of Fox "News" and the daily blogosphere. The perils for democracy in America are obvious. For example, could the so-called "Tea Party" have thrived in a world largely dependent on newspapers for its information? Or is that sad testament to the profound ignorance of the American people a product of Fox News, talk radio, and organized Internet rumor-mongering? You won't be surprised to learn that there is no question in my mind that, despite its familiarity to the 19th-Century No-Nothing movement, I'm convinced the Tea Party is an artifact of the channels through which we now receive so much of our political information.Jones writes well, and my harsh criticism may not be entirely deserved. However, it comes from my nagging feeling as I read this book that its underlying theme is nostalgia, a craving for the day when so much of the news that appeared in the nation's dailies and on the air originated in the early edition of the Old Gray Lady, The New York Times. Those days are fast receding into history, and as Jones himself writes, there's not much anyone can do about it other than "Adapt or Die."(From Mal Warwick's Blog on Books)

Jones outlines the death of real news exceptionally well. From his insider perspective he traces the forces and perssures that have given us, as my wife says, "fluff news" on the air and little of substance in our newspapers. Made me re-examine the papers I was receiving and how much actual news, as opposed to fluff about kittens rescued, personal interest stories, fluff pieces of all sorts, I was getting from my local papers. Result? I cancelled my subscriptions when I realized it was taking me ten minutes to read the Sunday paper because almost nothing in then was serious news. The effects and consequences of this are shown clearly - and they are not good.

Alex S. Jones draws to light what many of us already know... good reading thus far... Jones is objective as a mediator of the truth and candidly relates small-town newspaper takeovers as well as the larger circulators. He knows the history and shares it well. Hopefully more people take notice. Accountability news is beyond necessary in a democracy. Without it, we lose many of our freedoms and get robbed by those in public service and corporations. This is a must read book and Alex Jones shows why he has already been honored with one Pulitzer. Jones sums it up in the books closing sentences, "If the iron core should gradually rust away, American will have squandered part of their birthright. Surely we will not allow that to happen."

Aside from the power of the net, the news we receive has been influenced by a whole array of behind the scenes judgments, prerogatives, and decisions. This is the crux of this insider's view of the ethical dilemma of news reporting in the still potent print, TV, and radio mediums of today. We are a long, long way from the days of the independently owned newspaper...most of which have died on the vine in the last 20 years....including Jones's own family newspaper.So...He writes from direct first hand experience on the transformation of the down-home journalism of the past, into the Darwinian big business media empires of today....and the many influences upon it...all driven by money...and ratings....and profit. To Jones, it's this entertainment and opinion smoke screen....over and above hard objective news....that lies in jeopardy of depriving citizen's the right learn of the facts...hard, unpleasant, but true...as they often are. This is what he means, when he writes of "iron core" of the news. The one important caveat I have about his book is that I wish Jones had addressed, more thoroughly and carefully, the impact of the net....but his ethical perspective towards the news holds true no matter. The fact is that hard information, as had been unavoidable and intrinsic in old traditional media, is now also greatly expanded in the electronic media...but only for those who SEEK it.His thesis is that the public has not been well served in the traditional commercial media environment...which they actually own...is central to his thesis of continual ethical challenge to the bedrock of democracy...an informed citizenry. I recommend this book for anyone who wishes to understand just how fragile the First Amendment truly is. Jones's insistence that ethics, and objectivity, and accountability, need to find their way the the center of both our new, and old media world, to me is timelessly convincing....as is his faith that we must eventually rediscover the "iron core" of objective news, to balance the fire storm of too often uninformed personal opinion...or lose the most essential element of our American public discourse. It's a healthy thing to raise these questions...noting well that perfect objectivity is rarely, if ever possible...however, I agree with Jones, that it's worth the effort...and, that we can do a lot better than what we have today. For the general reader this book, is a good and fascinating intro into this ever evolving subject.

An insightful look at American journalism, its past, present, and possible future. The analysis of critical challenges facing the field is open-minded, well-informed, and thoughtful. Frequent anecdotes enliven the narrative and deepen the reader's appreciation for what is at stake. Highly recommended for anyone who cares about having an informed citizenry in this country.

My teen visited the Holocaust museum and it reminded me of a story I had seen in the Reader's Digest ages ago. Took me a few searches, but the memorable line, "It wasn't a bird." is how I finally found it.I love the authors' use of birds to show us the horror of her experience without having to look at it directly. The language choices are genius.I also love how the author took the worst humanity has to offer and managed to tell a story of hope. I stand in awe.Cons: The kindle version made viewing the photos difficult. For the kindle version I would request the language appendix be placed as a preface (I read the whole book through slaughtering the words and missing their meanings... only to find an appendix at the end...alas.)

While reading this novel, it's hard to believe that it was true. One young girl who started out as a student nurse and ends up a resistance fighter. She portrayed true grit, determination and luck!We cannot let stories like Irene has painstaking told be forgotten! We must never forget the horrors of WWII and the atrocities that were inflicted upon innocent men, women and children. We must remember that these things happened a mere 77 years ago and can happen again if we are not vigilant!I highly recommend that this book be required reading of American high school students. They need to learn our history and understand the hardships faced for freedom and of those that were willing to take risks and give up their lives so others may be free.I say put down the cell phones, Snapchat, protesting tearing down Civil War statues that they know nothing about and pick up a book and LEARN something!

Imagine that you are a 16-year-old Polish girl in a small rural town in eastern Poland called Kozienice enjoying a pretty, bucolic, and sweet life--that is until September 1, 1939. That's the day that Hitler launched his blitzkrieg or lightning war against Poland and overran the country in 18 days. What can you do? How can you possibly help your countrymen and countrywomen fight the Nazi onslaught and defeat the occupation? The answer to that existential question is the major reason why that young girl, known then as Irene Gut, decided, when she was much older (76 years old) and called Irene Opdyke, to tell the story of her life during that horrific time. She was helped in the telling by author Jennifer Armstrong. The book is In My Hands: Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer, and it is a powerful account of one person's bravery in the face of unimaginable hate and violence. Wholesale murder, rape, and torture haunted those memories.Irene risked her life many times to protect Jews she was hiding from imminent destruction. She is inspiring because she wanted to fight to eliminate an evil, whether in the form of the Nazis or the Communists, and if she couldn't do that, then she wanted to protect and save those who were being exterminated by that evil. We can all learn valuable lessons from her moral courage and her cunning determination. This is a remarkable book about a heroine whose name was enshrined in 1982 in the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem as one of the Righteous Among Nations for her heroic acts during the Holocaust. The writing style is at times poetic, but the real advantage of this autobiography is Irene's remembering and describing how she felt and what she thought as world events were swirling about her while she was entangled in the thicket of the Nazi cruelty in Poland. It is a narrative about survival and charity and goodness. She wanted her family to survive the terror, and she also witnessed how the Jews were brutalized and murdered and therefore was compelled to help them survive the Nazi inhumanity. This is a highly recommended book.

This was a very good book. I was hooked from the first page. I am interested in the different stories of the holocaust. This story takes a different view of the Germans and Russians. Irene is more or less saved by working for the Germans. She is shocked and saddened at how the Jewish people were treated. She is separated from her family and she learns that she has to survive the war in order to hopefully see her family again. I could write a lot more but I want you to read and see what Irene went thru in order to survive. You will enjoy this book it is worth the price.

I have a student who is a senior in high school who was reading this book for his Literature of the Holocaust class, and he told me I really needed to read this book. He was right. When it arrived, I read the first 90-some pages at work, then took it home and read the entire rest of the book that night. I guess I knew all the big stories of World War II and the Holocaust, but I never really considered the impact on people caught in the middle of it all. I didn't know much about what happened in Poland during the war. I consider this a grave omission on my part. This book has inspired me to read more, to learn more. Irene was a true hero.

The potential buyer can read all the other five-star reviews to find out what this book is about. I just want to make two comments. One, I cannot remember ever writing my close friends and telling them they MUST buy and read any book. After I finished this book, I did just that, saying that you absolutely must read about this Polish girl's courage and sacrifices while saving potential holocaust victims. Two, I want to acknowledge the writer of the book, Jennifer Armstrong. I have done this same thing and it is difficult to imagine the sweat a writer goes through trying to guarantee that the reader will always think it is the author who is telling them the story, not the writer. In this respect Jennifer Armstrong did a truly outstanding job because you never doubt that it is Irene who is telling you her story. Good work, Jennifer. I wish we could meet over a glass and discuss your trials as you were doing the writing.

Extreamly helpfull and inexpensive. Great review of twelve Lead ekg it definitely helped me get it down and if you buy the book on Kindle it's super cheap with the added bonus of saving the environment buy not buying the physical book.

I bought this book to brush up on my EKG knowledge before a medical mission trip. The book does give the basics of EKG's as far as content, but it was printed upside down and backwards (to pages read right to left), so not a quality book.

Very Helpful! I've been a nurse for 12 years, and specializing in cardiology for 2 years. This will help me feel more confident and be handy for everyone on our staff- I'm keeping it at my desk for everyone's reference. Thanks! *Fast Shipping!*

Its okay! If the pictures was not so smeared looking it would be great.

Excellent, exactly as described

Covers the basics.

My neice pass her state board because of this book now she's an MA

Love how easy it has been for me to interpret ekgs because of this little book. It's a great refresher and you can always keep in handy due to its small size.

I am still reading, and studying, this book, but I am extremely impressed with Trevor Paglen's reasoning and the inspired way he manages to see around obstacles to normal investigations. I had expected another vague "conspiracy" type of book, but Paglen proves numerous details and facts, to support his theories. He does a great job of coaxing informative details out of the hidden covert world. (The only complaint I have with this book is that he uses the term "black" so often. I would prefer he used other terms, such as "covert" or "hidden," to break up the repetitiveness.) But, he reasons out a good way to approach what appears to be an insurmountable wall of secrecy and find a way over or around it. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be impressed, I think, with Paglen's use of logic. Also, I admire the way that this author supports the American ideals of openness and accountability to the people of the United States, which the government too often seems to want to ignore, push aside or suppress.Altogether, I find this an educational and inspirational search for unraveling the truth from the many-layered onion of subterfuge and deception foisted on us, in the alleged interest of "national security."Bravo, Mr. Paglen! I look forward to purchasing your other works.

The perspective Paglen has in aggregating and distilling information over a sixty year period makes Blank Spots on the Map compelling. Yes, much of the information is available elsewhere as journalists and concerned citizens attempt to ferret out and disseminate information on places, activities, and people the government legally claims don't exist. But Blank Spots gives the account as a geographer. The paradox is that he is using boundaries as a broad framework in explaining the government's dark and deep geopolitical, national defense, surveillance activities supporting national and geopolitical ambitions which know no boundaries - legal, geographical, Constitutional, or otherwise.

Exhaustively documented, thoroughly researched, Trevor Paglen's almost obsessively detailed analysis of "dark ops" and the "black" world of supersecrecy is a surprisingly engaging page-turner. After learning that the appelation "classified" or "top secret" has been applied to literally millions of documents since the CIA and other intelligence agencies were formalized; that some four million individuals have security clearances to work on "classified" projects; that billions of dollars are spent each year to support and maintain "classified" or "dark" facilities - the reader finally must ask "Why?" What is the purpose of all this secrecy? What does the United States government deem so critical, so necessary, to its defense, or continued existence, that it must devote so much of its political, scientific and engineering capital to support a "shadow world?" Paglen suggests that Eisenhower wasn't just making a cautionary note about the "military/industrial" complex and its influence on domestic and governmental affairs. He was revealing a truth that was being ardently concealed from the American public: America as we have known it has been transformed into a permanently armed state, with an economy driven by weapons development and deployment, whose very existence depends on a perpetual state of war, somewhere in the world. So the next question then, is: Who is the enemy? A very compelling read, and not just for conspiracy buffs.

More than just the typical Area 51/Nellis/Edwards stuff. I really enjoyed the read, even the more disturbing parts (terrorist renditions and Iran /Contra). The introductory material on actual blanks spots on maps was better written than some of my graduate geography coursework. Highly recommend if you have an eye towards investigative geographies.

Slow start, had to stick with it.About 50 pages it peaked my interest and got quite interesting.Nicely separated subjects in each chapter.Great recap last chapter.A real eye opener, very good interesting information.Lots of food for thought!

Gives a great understanding of secret spots that created the map blank spots and the programs that created them. Great review of early programs--secrets.

Kind of a surprise not just abut UFO ops and bases, sections on Iran-Contra, black prisons, nameless spys and who they really are and politicos and what they really do. keeps you holding onto the book makes you late to work.

i thought that this was good quick read. i liked tat this was not a heavy conspiracy book but rather a brief history on where the black/covert world came from.

#74,733 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Terry Pratchett was brilliant and the master of a fantasy sub-genre that probably belongs to him alone. Mort is a novel set in Discworld. The Discworld novels fall into different categories: Tiffany Aching, Rincewind, the three witches, Sam Vines and the guards, and Death. Each book focuses on one of them, although they cross over and pop up in each others' books all the time. It is best if you start from the beginning of a particular grouping and work your way through, otherwise you'll miss a lot of inside jokes, references, etc. There are charts on the internet that will show you the groupings. You can trust Terry Pratchett to not be too linear and to not be very predictable. Mort is an early novel of Death. Mort is a bumbling young adolescent of no particular talent when his father takes him to the job fair to find an apprenticeship. Just at the stroke of midnight, Death arrives to offer Mort the apprenticeship. Death lives with his man servant, his daughter, and Binky, an immensely powerful horse, at a compound of his own creation. Like all of the Discworld books, the tone is satirical and clever. This book did not make me laugh out loud like Wee Free Men, but it was amusing. Ankh Mopork is much the same (a city impossible to describe here). Mort is sincere but naïve. Death is suffering from burnout and mayhem ensues. Somehow, Terry Pratchett makes all the nonsense work. These books do not contain any scenes, language, or images that would rate even a PG-13 rating at the movies. If a reader does not have sufficient maturity, much of the book will be wasted, because you won’t get the jokes or understand the satire. I count myself lucky to still have so many novels of Discworld ahead of me.

Mort is an awkward young man. He’s not really good at anything. His dad isn’t even sure what to do with him. So he takes young Mort to a job fair in town with the hopes of passing him off to someone else. No one seems interested in choosing Mort as an apprentice until just before midnight. Someone on a white horse and wearing a black cape comes up and offers Mort a job. Mort’s father believes the position is for an undertaker; but in reality the anthropomorphic personification of “Death” himself offers young Mort a position as his apprentice. Thus begins a pretty darn funny adventure as Mort does his best (and continually fails) to learn to be “death”.I believe this is book four in Terry Pratchett’s “Diskworld” series. It was recommended to me by a friend and he assured me that I didn’t need to read the previous three books to be able to read this one. He was right. While it’s my understanding that “death” makes appearances in some of the other books, I was perfectly able to follow along in this one without any prior introduction to the series. The book is silly – downright ridiculous at times, but is genuinely funny. There are almost laugh out loud moments in the book and Pratchett does a good job of painting a Mort character that all of us can relate to at different points in our lives. The humor and style of the book is not something that I would probably choose to read all of the time, but served as a great “pallet cleanser” between more serious novels. I certainly did enjoy the story and wouldn’t hesitate to read Pratchett again when I’m in the mood for a good laugh. Well done.

Pratchett is one of the greatest writers of our time, maybe all time. Discworld is one of the most amazing, vibrant, and spellbinding fantasy worlds ever conceived. Each book adds another piece to the rich fabric of this imaginary landscape, yet they can be enjoyed in any order. I find my favorite characters to be the ones occupying whatever Pratchett book I'm reading at the moment. There is humor and purpose dripping from every line of text that graces a Pratchett novel. Not a single word is wasted, nor abused. His spirit lives on in each fantastic journey through the Discworld. May he rest in peace. There is no need to review this book alone. If you're looking for a cookie cutter fantasy novel, Terry Pratchett is not for you. If, however, you seek a more profound experience from your literature than no single book by Terry Pratchett will ever be enough. I have read these books many times over.

Every year since our twins with tiny we would wrap picture books and put them under the tree on Dec. 1 and they would unwrap one each night until Christmas Eve and we would read it before bed. A tradition they looked forward to each year. They are getting older now and the picture books are not as exciting, so we have adopted a new tradition in the same vein. We love the love create from this book. It's a bit cheesy, Death is one of our favorite characters and Pratchett is simply a priceless author. So, when I came across this beautiful copy of the book I immediately knew what our new tradition would be. Starting this year we start reading the Hogfather each night as our countdown to Christmas, then watch the movie on Christmas Eve. We love it. This copy is unique, beautiful, and will be treasured.
