Gary Bertoline is the Associate Vice President for Visualization Computing. He formerly was Department Head and a Professor in the Department of Computer Graphics Technology. He is the co-founder of the Digital Enterprise Center in the School of Technology, and, in the 6 years he served as Department Head, he more than doubled enrollment, funded projects, and donations to the department. Prior to becoming department head he was on the faculty in Computer Graphics Technology for 4 years. I got this book for my CAD class(we modeled the problems with solidworks). I actually needed to get the newer version of this (one with the green cover) but i got this and pretty much all the problems were the same. Some were numbered differently and the pages were off a little. For example, the problems on lets say, page 90 of the green one , start in page 87 in this one. I just compared with my friend who had the new one and found the problem on mine.The book itself is good, they have alot of problems to practice with, though no solutions are given for these. But the chapters explain stuff quite well with alot of pictures and examples showing the definitions. Its a thin book and easy to carry around as well.

Great information and age appropriate. Wish it had experiments and the pages were in color. Like that the pages tear out. Not sure I would use this series again.

This book does not contain a disk with printable practice pages like the other two books I have ordered from the company. Very Frustrating. Customer Service has proved very unhelpful so far. May not continue to purchase from them as the technical issues are greatly interfereling with the quality and satisfaction of the product. The digital resources they are “moving towards” are not working for this homeschooling mom.

This series is great as a supplement to other homeschooling curriculums.

At his best, Berlinsky writes knowledgeably and beautifully about about the abstract worlds of science and mathematicas; and the history (and biography) os scientific thinking and accomplishment. After a while, you learn to skip-over the the tedious, self-indulgent, passages.that detract from the power of stgriking images.

This book has proven to be a worthy read, especially in view of the mass appeal of artificial intelligence, and its possible over-reach in today's society.

I admire an author's clever use of words as much as anyone, but there is undoubtedly a point where the clever use of words becomes "mannerism:" the author calls attention to HIMSELF instead of his subject matter.This book fails miserably here. Berlinski seems much more concerned about drawing attention to himself as "the brilliant writer" than about explaining his subject matter with clarity.After all, where did the algorithm come from? A major source may have been cook-books, getting a major boost from Charles Babbage, the symbolic logic of Frege, and finally Turing and the actual realization of the computer.Not recommended.

UPGRADE to 2 1/2 stars. Wordy discussion of historical figures with some relation to algorithms. Little information about any actual algorithms. I retract my previous review (1 star) because that regarded this book as an algorithms book, but it is more of a general interest book that I probably would have liked when I was in highschool.

David Berlinski, like God, is under-appreciated. He is too subtle, too wonderful, and mostly beyond us.

ALGORITHM is a concept Berlinski relates well. Book arrived just as described.

Having just read this book, I was ordering two others of Berlinski's. I noted the online reviews for this one (Algorithm) and was susprised at the number of negatives. I greatly enjoyed this book. Sure, there are parts that are a bit technical (only if you want to try to follow the few places where there are formulas). But, the core idea was soundly presented with a wonderful display of historical sequencing (more than a little bit appropriate given the importance of Turing's concepts here).The part that impressed me most was where he contrasts the analytical proof of a differential equation (and such) at the limit (out to infinitity) with the very human, grinding ability of simple (or complex) algorithms--and how the very idea of them was both everywhere in creation and only quite recently understood by humans (despite always having been used). In essence, algorithms allow human, finite minds to work out solutions that approach the inifinite.As for the "overwrought" nature of the book noted by others. Yes, good critique. However, that's the very thing that made it most interesting. This was not a college professor dryly building a mass of knowledge on a chalkboard in front of a class. Far more like a chap (rather smart one) in a bar having some beers with you, talking about the core of thought, logic, and math in the universe.I am not a mathematician or a logician (do have a Ph.D. in psychology and am active in social science), but I found the core idea not that hard to get. He came at it from four major directions in line with the four major ways key thinkers "got there" in the past century.I highly recommend this book if you like history of science, thinking about how it all works, and prefer doing such thought/work inthe context of a relaxed talk with friends who like to think.

First, symbolic logic is not an easy subject and requires attention to detail. Second, Berlinski's discursive style can require the reader to be accomodating and patient. Some may abandon Berlinski in frustration. But others will discover that Berlinski has created a rather unique work.It is easy to be disoriented by Berlinski's eclectic mix of fiction, biography, essays, and mathematics. I would hunker down for some serious math, but be sidetracked to an unfamiliar Greek fable. Just as quickly I was being introduced - with surprising clarity - to propositional calculus, truth tables, and tautologies. Another sidetrack and I was privy to the delusional thoughts of some stranger.At this point I fortuitously observed fine print on the copyright page: "This is a work of scholarship. The author has woven stories, involving imagined people and incidents into the text, the better to enable the reader to enjoy the technical discussions. Or to endure them." I relaxed and accepted that while my road might be a bit bumpy, I now had some understanding of Berlinski's itinerary.I particularly valued the short biographies of the mathematicians and logicians that played key roles in developing symbolic logic and its protege, the algorithm. My attitude was more mixed regarding the playful stories (pure fiction) "woven"into the text. Although some shed light on the technical discussions from unexpected perspectives,I found other stories to be more distracting than helpful.Notwithstanding the occasional flights of fancy, "The Advent of the Algorithm" is indeed "a work of scholarship". Clarity characterizes most technical sections, but careful reading is still necessary. The technical sections include:categorical syllogism (pg. 9-11) and Peano's axioms for arithmetic (pg. 32-35) - 4 stars.propositional calculus plus truth tables (pg 50-59) - 5 stars,predicate calculus (pg. 65-68, 71-80, 94-95) - 5 stars,Frege's "Foundations of Arithmetic" plus Russell's paradox (pg. 91-93) - 5 stars,"Principia Mathematica" plus Hilbert's program (pg. 96-100, 105-108, 112-114) - 5 stars,formal arithmetic (pg. 109-111) - 4 stars,Godel's Proof and recursion (pg. 116-129, 136-141, 143-145) - 5 stars,the calculus of lambda conversion (pg. 162-179) - 3 stars,Turing machine (pg. 181-192) - 4 stars,thermodynaymics (pg. 226-234, 238-248) - 3.5 stars,and the final three chapters (13-15) on neural networks, DNA coding, and complexity - 5 stars.I bogged down on chapter 8, a discussion of Alonzo Church's calculus of lambda conversion. Even after some study, I was still not comfortable. I began with no knowledge of lambda calculus; I ended with only a partial understanding. Fortunately, a detailed understanding is not critical to the remaining chapters.The final three chapters are especially interesting. Berlinski's examination of the question, "Why does complexity exist within a universe characterized by simple physical laws?", was fascinating and insightful.Should you buy this book? I think not, if you are looking for a typical book on mathematics for the layman. "The Advent of the Algorithm " requires attention to detail and persistence.However, a persistent reader, one willing to invest time and effort to gain an understanding of symbolic logic, should give Berlinski's book a try. His interests may not always coincide with yours, but the tour will be memorable. Berlinski has created a unique book about a difficult subject. Substantial sections clearly deserve five stars. I give it four stars overall.

This book is brilliant if you're managing a department for the first time or your struggling with your departmental budget.The authors explain everything clearly and provide easy to follow examples. The book is an easy read with information presented in a way that's simple and easy to retain. If you need to get up to speed fast, this is the book for you.It's a great book for anyone involved in the budget process.If you come from an accounting background you won't learn anything new, but you'll certainly get some great tips on how to explain the budget process to those who don't.To those who have bagged this book, be fair, it's aimed at those who have little or no knowledge.

I purchased this book as required text for a graduate school class, but it is written at the easy undergraduate level. I have done budgets formally for 7 years in my work, and found the discussions/tips to be surprisingly specific, accurate, and helpful. I would expect it to be particularly helpful to a new manager, because it assists you in setting up an organized way of approaching the task which will pay dividends many times over in future quarters/years. Better to get things set up correctly from the beginning than to do it haphazardly and then have to start over a year later.It also covers the politics and gamesmanship that you occasionally see in some organizations, and common traps and mistakes that can be avoided, including some from using computer spreadsheets. For a few bucks, a few hours of reading, and a few hours of advance planning before you get started, this can help you avoid a lot of frustration and give you a running start.

I am currently working with a small business that desires to emerge from "Ma & Pa" status. Up to now they have done little to manage their financial resources, except to count the cash at the end of the month - they do make a handsome profit. But they also recognize that if they are to grow they will need better management, and budgeting is at the core of financial management. I am using this book to walk them through the fundamentals, and I have found it to be a very good resource for educating them on the important aspects of budgeting. Plus, they now understand that budgeting is far more than just deciding on numbers - there have to be reasons for the numbers. I highly recommend this book for newbies at budgeting. You will come away with a solid foundation in the principles and techniques that are so necessary if you want to do it right.

I read these reviews lamenting the horrible print quality while waiting for me pre-ordered copy to be delivered and expected to be terribly disappointed. They were so negative I was ready to return the book without opening it. Reviewers claim that the photos look like copies of copies and that HCB never would have let his work be presented this way. Because of these reviews, I though the Steidl facsimile of the original must have been blundered somehow. It was only at my fiancées insistence that I even bothered unwrapping the book to take a look at it (she knew how excited I was about the book coming out and even offered to pay for it if I didn't like the edition).I just took my copy out of the shrink wrap, and couldn't be more pleased. I am Thrilled with this book.Here is some background that may be helpful. Several months ago, when I heard this book was being reprinted, I decided to see if my university's interlibrary loan service could track down a copy is the rare, valuable, original for me to borrow, to see if I wanted to buy the Steidl edition when released. I figured it was a longshot since a book this rare and valuable is risky to lend out. But the library was able to get it for me and I can tell you that Steidl did a PERFECT job reproducing it. It is literally as though you are holding a brand new copy of the original in your hands (except better, because the photos haven't faded over 50 years and had hundreds of students' hands on the pages- they look fresh as they should).So I have to admit, I'm really baffled by the negative reviews, especially one that claims to have seen the original. If people think the photos look like copies of copies, well, that's what you would have thought of the original too. Yeah, they're not hyperglossy, but neither was the original book. End of story. It's EXACTLY what the version of the original edition I had looked like (but, again, only better: because it's new, not missing the dust jacket, and comes in a nice slipcase).I can tell you as someone serious about photography books ( and ones from Steidl as well: I've spend lots of $ on Steidl's gorgeous editions of William Eggleston's work) and street photography itself, you should not let these negative reviews of the print quality dissuade you.The content, of course, speaks for itself: the book is an absolute masterpiece.So I would really advise you just see for yourself what you think. You may be disappointed if you think they will look like digital photos. But they are not now, and they never were. What they are is faithful to HCB's vision for the book.

I have an orginal photograph by Cartier Bresson and it is in this book. I think that this classic book has many of his greatest photographs. His essay in this book can be found in a few other books about photography. One needs to shop around for the best price for this book. It still is not cheap. This is the greatest photography book that I own. I had a chance to check out the orginal book in a library many years ago.

I am a photographer and long time photo book collector. This book is a great bargain. I could never afford the $500 and up for an original, 1952 edition. Not in the 70s, 80s, 90s, not today either. Moe's Books in Berkeley had them and I certainly spent hours over the years admiring and putting back on the shelf. I've seen some stupid one-star pans in the reviews here. I can assure you, this is not gravure printing but the printing is as close to how I remember seeing the original for the first time. Magnifico! Steidl has recreated The Decisive Moment and for $77.58, I gladly take it. You won't be sorry if you do the same.

A classic that I didn't want to miss. Great, beautiful images. The book has to set of photos. The first set from before Magnum agency (1947) and the other from there to the first years of 1950 (the book was first published in 1952. You will miss some of the most remembered photos of Cartier-Bresson: the man in the bicycle and the spiral stairs, the two «voyeurs»...But there is a lot to be amaze. The big format really do merit the quality of the content. It's a shame that my book apparently felt during delivery, and have a little bend in one of the outer corners, although it didn't affect the pictures. I'm thinking to buy another one for my collection.

A classic. If you're considering purchasing this book then you know who HCB is, and you know the significance of this collection. It's pricey, but well worth it.

Great, great book!!! This book gets A+ for facsimile and verity of the original - it is most enjoyable, creatively satisfying and an important book to have been republished. The printing however leaves something to be desired, especially when compared to the original which was a masterpiece not only as the best work around at the time but for its incredible reproduction. I found problems in the shadow and dark areas of the printing of the current version which, in this age of technology is curious and should not have happened. Nonetheless I am extremely happy to have a copy of it.

As a bible for photographers, the book has an excellent packaging, whatever the introduction writen by Clement Cheroux, the content of the book contains many of Bresson famous photos. The printing and the papers - materials are excellent. It is a valuble collective photography book.

Thank you for an excellent reproduction of Cartier Bresson's book "The Deciosive Moment" ! I had bought the original in 1955 when I could barely afford the $12.00 as a proverbially pennyless student, and I had it signed by HCB later on when I met him at a presentation during a phoographic conference in New York City. I am pleased to use the reprint in order to presserve the original.hank you.
