This book is about the photographs taken of middle class black people. These photographs were shown at the 1900 Paris Exposition, at the American Negro Exhibit. They are still interesting today, because they show how black people looked and dressed in that era. Also of interest were photographs of blacks who looked more white than black, including a black albino person. I already knew about blacks being raped by whites during slavery, which would render their off-spring mulatto... or looking totally white. I haven't seen many photographs of them though. All of the photographs in this book are superb in quality. I found the text about these photographs to be very informative as well.

Great old-time, Victorian-age photos of Black people in their splendor. Why aren't these images more widely known?

If you are interested in the history of photography and also in African American photographers impact in history this is the book for you. Highly recommend.

The book has 2 very contrasting parts. The first is an analysis of Du Bois' collection of Georgia Negro photographs, that he exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Several hundred photos. Mostly of middle class American Negroes, well dressed and well posed for the photographer. (Who was not actually Du Bois himself.) The photos tended to show people born after the end of the Civil War and slavery.In that Paris Exposition, Du Bois' offering was a deliberate contrast to the other depictions of Africans, which came from the European empires in Africa. These invariably showed tribal Africans. Backward and ignorant. This was the ideological or racial justification for the White Man's Burden of imperialism. What Du Bois depicted were educated Americans, as an eloquent counterpoint. Here were people of African descent, but otherwise indistinguishable from white middle class Americans or Europeans.Another fillip was the inclusion of light skinned Negroes by Du Bois. As a rejoinder to a strict racial and racist separation promulgated by some whites. In one example, there is a photo of a girl who looked more southern European (think Spaniard or Italian perhaps) than African. Yet to the white mainstream, she would have been irrevocably classified as Negro.The second half of the book studies the lynching photos. Taken by whites at lynchings throughout the American South. Here, Smith takes particulars never to show the grotesqueries of the victims. (Other books adequately do this.) Instead, there is an incisive analysis of the white spectators and participants. We see them preening and guiltless. Many of the photos were in fact used as postcards, sent by the participants to others. While the white ideology of those times depicted Negroes as savages, the book asks, who were the actual savages?

Brian Murray has done a great job writing a book that both newbie commercial investors and those with more experience will enjoy and find beneficial. I own several single family rentals and a 24-unit apartment building that are all performing well, so I'm not a newbie, but nevertheless I found myself highlighting key insights on almost every page of the book. There is plenty of practical advice along with related anecdotes in every chapter, and his straightforward and relatable writing style make the reader, or at least this reader, believe that achieving significant success in the world of commercial real estate is something ordinary people can realistically achieve. The book is quite an achievement. I don't know if Brian has written many books in the past, but if this is one of his first forays as an author you wouldn't know it from the quality of his work.Brian also was able to put into words something that I've felt but not been able to express as clearly as he did. In response to a friend who asked him how much money his real estate business needs to be worth before he would walk away (sell it), he says the question misses the point. "I might have started my business for the extra income, but it became more than that with every hour of my time I put into growing it, as it does for most entrepreneurs." The book has plenty of examples of the hard work and tenant drama that make real estate investing via commercial building ownership completely different than passive investments like the stock market, but the pride and self-satisfaction from making a positive difference in the lives of tenants and in the community from improving commercial property comes through throughout the book.

This is more of a motivational book, like "you can do commercial real estate! Rah rah rah." If you don't know anything about it, then this is an overview. Definitely not a how to book. There are better books out there on the subject. Wish I had not wasted my time on this one. (Kept thinking the meat of the subject was coming up)

I just finished reading Crushing It. If I am to describe it in one world, I would say it is: Real! I absolutely loved the book because of that: keeping it real. Throughout the book, it kept reminding me of Shoe Dog. Although very different, but both books struck me as genuine on so many levels.Brian simply shares his experience in the book, the good and the bad, and all the lessons to learn from that. He keeps it simple, and shares some resources on his website, as well as a summary of simple and practical financial formulas, a real estate glossary, team members skills you would need, and other practical stuff. He gives what I think is the right dose of encouragement coupled with a caveat on what a real estate business really takes. It certainly is not a get-rich-in-a-week magic prescription, nor in a year nor in five for that matter. But with the right dedication, knowledge, and hard work, it certainly an investment that pays off on the long run. He is very much pro a long term approach, and even discourages a buy-and-flip approach (of course depending on what your overall strategy is). I liked the fact that he bases his long term strategy on adding value to your assets then extracting equity and re-investing again, rather than betting on value appreciation by pure market factors. I also enjoyed what I thought were hilarious -albeit super weird- stories about some of his tenants.He shares some of his personal experiences as well as the values he holds. That also resonated a lot with my personal experience and my values. It is a book I thoroughly enjoyed flip to flip, and I certainly recommend. I hope he writes more, and perhaps get into some details of financial modeling and different property market specificities.

Brian Murray's text Crushing It in Apartments and Commercial Real Estate is a great read for a fellow teacher who would love a little bit more income to help deal with some expenses, as well as to help pad my wallet a little bit. As a teacher I don’t have a lot of extra money which was the entire draw of purchasing Murray’s book, especially when I saw that Murray himself was a former teacher. So this book was great as both an eye opener and some good ideas for a beginner.The best, and strongest, part of his book was that a lot of the advice he offers doesn’t require someone to be independently wealthy but suggests numerous ways to keep costs low and to help going into debt (which I already have plenty of as a teacher). It was especially nice that he has so many different suggestions on how to both use what you’ve got and to be inventive. For someone new to the game it was really great that he also had plenty of examples and personal stories that showed how he went from teacher to CEO of a massive company. I’m very excited to try and implement some of the things that he discussed in his book.

I think the content is decent, but the synchronization to the Kindle book is terrible. There was no quality control done on this book for the audio to text synchronisation. Whole pages are not synchronized.

Was just a little better than a dictionary. Seemed like a condensed version of or study guide for “Complete Medical Spanish” by Joanna Rios et al.

This was purchased as a Christmas gift for my grandson who is in college graduating soon as a Registered nurse. He was very pleased receiving this gift.

I have truly enjoyed this audiobook. It has been my experience that this method of learning is actually enjoyable and purposeful. I have been studying the Spanish language for many years, and conjugations are difficult for me. This book has been very clear and easy to understand. A perfect edition to learning the Spanish language and definitely a handy tool to have if you’re in the medical field. I work as a full time caregiver and this will definitely come in handy with my job.The narrator Jessica Del Cid is very clear spoken, and easy to listen to. They not only take you through the various medical terminology but they also give you a refresh on how to put sentences together, basic Spanish, and she give you tips for pronunciation. She also gives helpful tips on how to best consume the language, for instance: books, radio, movies, television, etc. I definitely feel that my Spanish pronunciation has improved, and words are coming more naturally. I am confident in speaking now that my verbs and terms come to me more quickly. The drilling will give you the practice needed and you will find this method extremely helpful. Fantastic product!

Great book! My kids have a hard time opening the pages since they aren't really pages there flaps that go into each other but that's only be user they are 1 and 2 years old so they'll get the hang of it as they grow! However, they enjoy it when we go through it together :)

Great! Very creative use of cut out shapes for the pages (they shrink in size as the animals they see get smaller and smaller: from Giraffe to Penguin). Most pages also include little facts about the animal as well (i.e.: the elephant is the largest land animal), but the text is also simple and fun because the Sesame Street characters are narrating. It's a particularly fun book before and after a zoo visit.

This is a wonderful Sesame Street book. It has flaps to lift, but in a very original way. It makes your toddler think to figure out how to turn the pages effectively. The pictures are cute. Our toddler loves animals, and this book has a few which do not appear so frequently elsewhere such as a sloth or a spider monkey which is a welcome feature.

My 17 month old loves Elmo's Favorite Places flap book, so I had to get this one. It is beautiful, plus it has healthy foods on every page. We read this during breakfast/lunch/dinner time so it's great encouragement for the kids to eat healthy. It's good quality - flaps seem sturdy. It also introduces more of the lesser known characters so it keeps things interesting.

I did not like this book. The doors get smaller as you go making it really hard for a toddler to hold the book and turn the pages. It annoyed me and my son, so we returned it.

This is a very cute Elmo lift-the-flap book. The pages get smaller and smaller so that you can see all the previous animals that they visited at the zoo. Cute pictures and a cute story. My 2 yo and 4 yo both love this book.

elmo's favorite places was a better buy. the pages got smaller and my 17 month-old had difficult with the pages which got smaller, and it wasn't a compelling story.

Great book, nice pictures and pages, great for any kid that likes sesame street.

About the Author

Józef Czapski (1896–1993), a painter and writer, and an eyewitness to the turbulent history of the twentieth century, was born into an aristocratic family in Prague and grew up in Poland under czarist domination. After receiving his baccalaureate in Saint Petersburg, he went on to study law at Imperial University and was present during the February Revolution of 1917. Briefly a cavalry officer in World War I, decorated for bravery in the Polish-Soviet War, Czapski went on to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and then moved to Paris to paint. He spent seven years in Paris, moving in social circles that included friends of Proust and Bonnard, and it was only in 1931 that he returned to Warsaw, and began exhibiting his work and writing art criticism. When Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, Czapski sought active duty as a reserve officer. Captured by the Germans, he was handed over to the Soviets as a prisoner of war, though for reasons that remain mysterious he was not among the twenty-two thousand Polish officers who were summarily executed by the Soviet secret police. Czapski described his experiences in the Soviet Union in two books: Memories of Starobielsk (forthcoming from NYRB) and Inhuman Land (available from NYRB), the latter of which describes his continuing efforts to find out what had happened to his missing and murdered colleagues. Unwilling to live in postwar communist Poland, Czapski set up a studio outside of Paris. His essays appeared in Kultura, the leading intellectual journal of the Polish emigration that he helped establish; his painting underwent a great final flowering in the 1980s. Czapski died, nearly blind, at ninety-six.Eric Karpeles, painter, writer and translator, is the author of Almost Nothing: The 20th Century Art and Life of Józef Czapski. His comprehensive guide, Paintings in Proust, considers the intersection of literary and visual aesthetics in the work of the great French novelist. He has written about the paintings of poet Elizabeth Bishop and about the end of life as seen through the works of Emily Dickinson, Gustav Mahler and Mark Rothko. I read this book when it first came out in French, and just re-read it in Karpeles's English translation. A Proust scholar will find perhaps little that they would consider new in terms of research, and the main interest of the book may be its context. While imprisoned in Gryazovets, a Russian camp near Vologda, located in a bombed-out monastery, Czapski participated in a series of sometimes authorized, sometimes clandestine lectures: inmates would discourse from memory on any topic dear to them, whether literature, sports, geography... Czapski gave a series of talks on the history of painting (and, as we learn from Karpeles's biography of Czapski, "Almost Nothing," even drafted an art historical volume, but the notes were lost, confiscated...). As he worked on his topic, another idea came to haunt him: to present to his fellow prisoners the work of Proust -- whom he saw as a sort of prisoner, locked in his "corked bedroom," in disregard of his health, entirely devoted to his work. Proust's "In Search of Lost Time" brought hope of a time regained into a place so remote and seemingly antithetical to the aristocratic world he describes. Speaking to Polish fellows in arms, Czapski nevertheless gave his lectures in French. His notes, some of which are reproduced and translated (with only a handful of very slight errors) in the plate section, are a visual map to his interpretation of Proust, drafted mainly in Polish, with a sprinkling of French, German, Latin, as required by the origin of the references. The French edition of these talks presents perhaps a more fragile text as it preserves some grammatical errors and omissions made in the surviving transcripts of these lectures. (The journey from the original conception to the published text is in itself fascinating: it's not clear whether Czapski had detailed notes or whether he spoke based on the mental map in the form of visual diagrams recorded in the notebooks; afterwards, he dictated the lectures in abridged form to two inmates who transcribed it on a typewriter -- as Karpeles points out, mystery envelops the circumstances of the creation of this typescript [a typewriter in a gulag?]. Eventually a second typescript was created. Both bear some handwritten corrections made by Czapski, perhaps others. Karpeles's version relies on a comparison between the two versions; whereas the French publication had access to only one typescript.) Perhaps because of publishing costs, the NYRB edition reproduces only a few select pages with the draft diagrams, accompanied by a translation on the facing page. The French version doesn't offer translations of its plates, but includes color photographs of the entire notebook, including the two tattered covers with the title "Tyetrad" [Exercise Book], printed in Cyrillics.Let not the Proust scholar be too disappointed or walk away too early, however. While Czapski may seem to add little to the "scholarship," doesn't encountering Proust in the gulag tell us something about Proust we may have previously overlooked? And plain and "unscholarly" as Czapski's interpretation may appear, it brings in his unique erudition by setting Proust side by side Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Zeromski, Conrad in ways that to a discerning eye might indeed suggest new avenues of exploration!

I bought the book because of the artist, a very good comic book veteran artist, but I genuinely pushed the "Buy it Now" button because of the cover.And that's where surprises begin to happen. In the first few pages, we're introduced to a conflictive, totalitarian world which may even sound very preachy at times. However, unlike those garbage, preachy comics we're flooded with lately, this one concentrates its time on telling the story from a personal, emotinal point of view.Most of the character feel interesting, and can actually explain their situations to a convincing degree. The ones who doesn't are temporary characters which I believe are made to be disliked, and dropped. However, nobody is above others, that's one of the things that caught me. A little spoiler-there's this character which is supposed to be the hero (besides the main protagonist) whom in other poorly-written stories would be unbeatable. In this story, he's overpowered by surprisingly efficient, garden-variety cops. Seriously, we need those cops patrolling our streets.However, I feel like there are details which are left outside of the story which, I guess, you have to figure out yourself based on the events in the comics. For example, what are the rules of this universe where animal people can't mix up like they normally would on any other story where people from different species mix-up just fine. That part is the biggest plot point, and yet, it feels like it's left unexplained for the most part.And because of that reason, I'm buying volume 2. I need to know if there's a reason, for that thing to be there, whether it's good or bad. I just need to feel the bad guys have some complexity other than being an excuse for being preachy about modern day topics.Also, lots of sexy, thicc, pig girl moments.

I have followed Mirka since seeing her on a panel at C2E2, and she is amazing. Her art is amazing and I have been waiting on Unnatural since it was first talked about. I am excited to read it and the first issue shows a very restrictive world that tells you how to live and who to love. The main character is easy to relate to and fun to read. The art is amazing and coloring is perfect. I cannot wait to read the rest. This is an adult comic.

I love the character design in this one, and the story is immediately engaging. The main characters are likeable, and the colors are vibrant. I don't want to accidentally paint this as porno, but there are some sexual themes and some nudity, so prudes need not apply.

Beautifully illustrated and well written. Didn't know what it was going to be like just wanted it for the art work but ended up loving the story. Will most likely buy the next issues as they release.
