About the Author

Javier DeFelipe, PhD is a Research Professor at the Instituto Cajal (CSIC) located in his hometown, Madrid, Spain.The particular expertise of Javier DeFelipe lies in the microanatomy of the cerebral cortex. Since 1991, the main focus of his team has been directed at understanding the neurochemical and microanatomical characteristics of the neocortex and of the hippocampal formation. The information that has been obtained regarding the normal organization of these cortical regions has been used to investigate the possible alterations that might occur in these structures in epilepsy and Alzheimer disease. Another of his principal interests is in the study of the history of our current understanding of important aspects of cortical organization and function. In particular, he is interested in the origins and the roots of cortical histology and circuitry.

This book is a collector's item for those interested in cell structure and/or those who love beautiful line drawings and delicate paintings with exquisite detail. Plus, there is plenty of text to give the reader plenty of context for the plates. A unique book.

This book is incredible, a must for anyone who loves science and art. The pictures are gorgeous, and there's just the right amount of text to provide background without detracting from the art. I am thrilled to have found a great deal on it, as it is usually priced high, but it is worth it for a beautiful coffee table book, or just for reference and enjoyment.

The reproductions of neurological drawings in this book are stunning, and hard to find collected in one source like this. The text is fascinating, giving a brief overview of Cajal and other neurological pioneers, as well as a brief overview of the structures depicted. The quality is very high, the book is densely illustrated, and I feel it's worth the price to have this treasure of a book.

These books (the entire series) are the work of a master playing with the genre. Clear nods to Chandler by focusing more on an unforgettable character than on plot, but the interplay between the stories and the man are tighter. Our hero drinks and wisecracks but the drink and wisecracks don't hold him aloof from the horror and mayhem he encounters and instigates. They consume him. And 'wisecracks' is wrong. Lew Griffin's insights are too nuanced, poetic.In a nod to Queneau (haven't read him, but narrator-as-author references him quite a lot) he breaches the fourth (and fifth) walls with fluidity and pleasing effect: the dreamlike quality of a retrospective, self-aware, forgetful, reflexive, reconstructive, insights revealed in layers. Chapter 32 in Moth is a particular delight.They're brilliant, fun, playful, and among the most enjoyable books I've ever read.Make sure you read them in order as Amazon switches 2 and 3 (I think):1. James Sallis takes us through the sweep of a man’s life as we follow New Orleans detective-turned-novelist Lew Griffin through four missing persons cases over a period of three decades. The novel opens on a frightening scene in Lew’s early years when he killed a man and appeared to derive some sadistic satisfaction from it. After that, there is little introspection in his first-person narrative, almost as if he is afraid to look too deeply into himself. Lew and the people in his life have their triumphs and their setbacks. Not everything that happens to them is bad. Yet there is always a bleakness waiting to creep in, and even as life goes on all around him, it becomes increasingly clear that Griffin is a man who will always be alone, no matter who he is with. This does not read like the first novel of a series and I am very interested to see how Sallis carries on from here.

The mention of Raymond Chandler and Ross Macdonald was enough to make me buy this book, but also the reason I rank it this low. When there is no comparison, mentioning these authors backfires. There probably are comparable authors but none come to mind.

Everyone of Sallis's bug books is great.

I'm late to find this author, but I will make up for lost time. Very different take on a detective. Let's see how it goes from here. Don't expect the usual.

The only help you'll get is a few hard drinks and morning."This book is unlike any other detective novel I've read. You know how in all detective stories you get the sense that the case our hero is investigating is a stand-out case for him amongst all of his smaller, regular cases? That it's a a mystery that he'll probably remember forever and is worth dedicating a book to above the others? Well, The Long-Legged Fly focuses instead on those OTHER cases: the everyday ones, the day-to-day work. The book can barely be considered a novel; it's more of a series of short stories highlighting key times throughout different decades in Creole private detective (and part-time insurance strong-arm) Lew Griffin's life as an individual instead of just a hard-boiled dick. Even though the mysteries are fairly tame and inconsequential, each decade finds Lew as a different person, a complex man that finds himself and loses himself again, that evolves and transforms throughout the years, as any person would. "The world doesn't change, and mostly we don't either, we just go on looking into the same mirror, trying on different hats and expressions and new sets of vice, opinion, and prejudice; pretending, as children do, to see and feel things that are not there."It's also written by James Sallis, who is not only a crime novelist but also a poet, philosopher, and musician. He fills the book with sometimes drunken but always poignant ruminations on life, the blues, and classic literature. Although the book's structure makes it sometimes difficult to be engaged in the superficial story, the character of Lew Griffin is the star of the show, and it's fascinating watching him evolve. I really enjoyed this one. Sallis is a really gifted writer and I'm interesting in seeing where Griffin goes from here. "Maybe the best parts of our lives are always over. Maybe happiness, contentment, are things we only recollect through the filters of time, elusive ghosts forever behind us."

The story follows Griffin as he investigates four cases of missing persons. His success varies and even when he locates the people he's looking for, he never actually finds the object of his search.This mystery is not really a mystery at all. Rather, it's the story of thirty years in the life of a hurting, flawed man trying to live a quiet existence in New Orleans. Rather than being epic in its sweep, though, "Fly" is minimalist. Sallis is a poet in addition to being an author and it shows in this book.I suppose it's understandable that Sallis hasn't enjoyed wider success in the genre--his books certainly don't grab you in the same way that most mysteries do--but it's definitely a shame. Readers who are interested in more than simply solving a mystery will definitely find something to admire in this book.

I use this book all the time in my first semester of dental hygiene school! The pictures and tutorials are great. I purchased all ebooks to use on my iPad and this one has NO PAGE NUMBERS. It's so hard to find the pages were working out of when everything is in a "location" and there are 7000+ locations. Instead of flipping to page 134 I have to scroll to location 3165/7000+. Would love the book if this could be fixed! If you are considering purchasing as an ebook, I would suggest getting the hard copy instead. You make so many notes and have to rip out and laminate so many of the pages. Taking and printing screen shots of all the pages I need in lab is such a hassle :(

Exactly what I needed for dental hygiene school and cheaper than even buying g used from the school bookstore

Not bad, the order for some of the procedures is hard to follow, but I appreciate the author being willling to break things down for both right and left handed hygienists in both this and the Fundamentals of Periodontal Instrumentation and Advanced Root Instrumentation. Also like the Peri Instrumentation book, this has a nice flap to help protect the thin pages from too much abuse in my backpack.

Bought this book brand-new and I would recommend everyone else do so as well! Many times my professor had us doing assignments straight from the book and a lot of the other students bought it used and those papers had been torn out already! Great Book!

This publication has 43 larger print pages. Although written in the first person, no author is noted. No publication information is included. No publisher, No copyright. Very odd. The quality and quantity of information included is dismal.There are no pictures or maps. There are no details, addresses, etc. Proof reading step must have been missed also.

Wished I had listened to the other reviews. No valuable information in this book; just a few sightseeing place suggestions and even those were minimal. What a waste of my money! Amazon should be ashamed to offer this "book."

One of the most poorly written books I've purchased. Am doubtful it was even edited. Not worth purchasing.

I guess for under three dollars, you cannot expect a great deal of material in a book. I was also disappointed at several proofreading errors, such as "gorilla war" for "guerilla war."

I found it to be little more than a pamphlet and a waste of money. Not much information in this short "book" as there are only 41 pages of content (including the Table of Contents) and it is in large print. Brief searches on the internet would be more useful.

I didn't realize this was only 43 pages of information easily found on the internet. Do not purchase this under any circumstances. It is a waste of money. I will get a refund if I can.

While this short book had some interesting information it wasalmost humorous with its non stop errors. Obviously it was neither proofread nor edited.

This book is really amazing and useful to know fully about Australia. I just love this country. Really amazing.

For the millions of Paul Harvey fans, this book is a loving sweet valentine to the most amazing radio personality the world even knew - pre "Rush". The book lovingly and softly told the story of a kid from Oklahoma who became a HUGE and wildly successful radio star, not because of his ability to shock, but just the opposite. Because he found the good in most situations and people. If you're looking for a hit piece - this ain't it! But if you want to warmly trace the glow of the life of Paul Harvey - from the first "Hello Americans... to his very last "Good Day"... get the book and read it. It is light reading told from a fond perspective and it will make you miss him, and his daily broadcasts "Paul Harvey News" and "The Rest of the Story". That's all I have, and as he would say... "Good Day..."

This man saw the best side of everything. And he knew how to tell a good story. Really enjoyed listening to him. Of course, today liberals would throw labels like "square" or "old fashioned" at him. But that just shows how truly dumb they are with their hateful attacks on decent people.

I've always been a fan of Paul Harvey, so this was a nice book to fill in the blanks about his life. To get a good feel for what Paul Harvey was about, do check out the "Rest of the Story" books and other Harvey books. There is no one like him on the radio these days.

Good book generally, lot's of info. BUT...there are problems!Each chapter is full of footnotes. Maybe 30-50 per chapter. That's OK, but what is involved in finding & reading these footnotes on the Kindle is almost impossible! It took me at least 3-5 minutes to find each one after guessing at what location # it might be at, then realizing I didn't note the chapter # or name (this is necessary to find the footnote), then going back to find the chapter & name, again guessing at the location the footnote might be at, let alone the problem of getting back to the chapter & page I originally found the footnote on!This whole procedure is very disruptive to the flow of the story as well as technologically challenging and a real nightmare in general!This is a weak point of the Kindle in general. But this book in particular relies so much on footnotes and has so many that it really ruins the smooth reading of the book.There is no information on the page you are reading (save the location #), no chapter # or chapter name is shown on any page beyond the 1st (title) page of each chapter (this is true of most Kindle books as well).Also, if you don't write down the location # of the page you are reading (or book mark it) you are lost when you want to return to it because the "go to furthest page read feature" takes you to the page the footnote was on which is near the end of the book!Footnotes should be denoted by the footnote #, then the chapter # and then the location #. Also, in guessing the location of where the footnote might be, it's very hard to do if you don't immediately remember the chapter # and name.As far as the content, there is much to much un-necessary description. For example, the physical appearance of a lobby in each of the many radio stations Mr. Harvey visited or worked at. Every description goes into gaudy detail of the Gothic looks of the place and have no bearing at all to the story nor are they ever referenced again. Many of these descriptions go on for many pages and are not at all necessary to the story or anything else.I got the feeling that after the 1st draft of the book was written some editor felt he could increase the size of the book 25% by adding lots of un-necessary description and details...and did!These detailed descriptions could have been so much more interesting if the words were spent describing in detail say Mr. Harvey's home or office or something that might give us further insight & clues to his personality rather than the history of where the marble used in some 1937 radio station came from & was mined and installed! There's no description or details at all about his Arizona home other than a few sentences that it existed. But loads of details about the physical looks of places that have nothing to do with the story & nobody could care less about.Still there is much good information, stories, antidotes and quotes in the book. Just super cumbersome to read being so heavily footnoted without any easy way to read the footnotes.

This book Good Day The Paul Harvey is recommended as a must read for anybody that loves to hear about a great American that lived life to the fullest.

Paul J. Batura's biography of Paul Harvey was an enjoyable read. He captured the essence of what made Paul Harvey so beloved by so many. If you grew up, like I did, listening to Paul Harvey News and Comments, you will love the book. If you did not have the privilege of living in that era, do yourself a favor and read this book about a great American!

It was an interesting book. I remember listening to "the rest of the story" when I was a kid. Even my own kids would pause in the morning when Paul Harvey came on, they also wanted to hear "the rest of the story". Worth the time spent reading it.

Overall a good book, but the misspellings detract from the enjoyment. Sax 5th Avenue? Clyde and Bonnie Parker? Would still recommend the book.

OH. MY. GOD. This book was absolutely STUNNING. Let me give you five reasons on why I’m rating this book five stars:Preface: I know for a fact that some readers are going to say “This book had too much drama” or “This book was predictable” or “These characters were immature” or along those lines. The drama part is true, so come into the book with that expectation in mind. My main point is that this is a total rom-com, and thus, romance is a focal point to this book (as well as hella character development). What can I say? I’m weak for fluffy romantic comedies. ESPECIALLY when they feature marginalized characters.1. The dialogue = PERFECT??Right off the bat, something about Sharma’s writing and I just CLICKED. The dialogue was incredibly believable and witty and real. The transitions of the conversation and back-and-forth was just so smooth and had this natural flow that kept me reading. There was just some spark - I honestly don’t know how to fully explain it - in the characters’ dialogue that paved the way for an instant connection with me.2. Exploration of kismet (to follow destiny, or not to follow?)“‘Because those who fight destiny, who fight what’s written in the stars, always end up having the hardest struggle.’”The book follows Winnie’s belief in a prophecy that she will meet her soulmate before her 18th birthday. The prophecy also states that their name will being with an “R,” and they will give her a silver bracelet. This belief shatters when Winnie’s “break” with her current boyfriend (and soulmate?) Raj ends up in Raj cheating on her. From here, she finds herself lost. What is destiny? How true is it, really? And is there some way to escape the cycle? I thought Sharma’s exploration of this concept through Winnie’s thoughts was really well-done and extensive - especially for a teenage girl that isn’t quite sure of her future.3. Winnie and her fierce family = A+Wow, words cannot describe how much I enjoyed Winnie’s family. Her mother and grandmother are so fierce and bedazzling! I also adored seeing the little tidbits of the family’s traditions and customs (woohoo, #ownvoices novel!) that are included in her narrative. (Also, all the food that was mentioned?! I NEED to go to a Dosa Hut one day.) Her mom, dad, and grandmother may be strict sometimes, but also exceptionally supportive of her life decisions. Their interactions were always a blast to read.4. Dev aka A BOLLYWOOD-WORTHY ROMANCE“‘As much as I love Bollywood damsels in distress, I don’t need saving. I’m my own hero.’”Y’ALL. THIS SECTION. WILL BASICALLY JUST BE ME FANGIRLING.No but for real. While a love triangle is low key advertised in the blurb, there’s really only one viable love interest that readers root for. Dev is literally all your favorite, soft rom-com heroes wrapped into one character. He’s been in Winnie’s life since starting high school, but they kind of have a disconnect after she starts dating Raj. This book explores their reconnection and his courtship, now that Dev has a chance with her. And I LOVED every single moment of it. This boy was SO suave and charming (but not in a pretentious way) and soft! All their dates were cute with a capital “C,” and it was so sweet to see him go out of his way to make sure Winnie had a great time. AND DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED WITH THE DANCING. (Note: Dev isn’t quite a Bollywood fan but a guy’s gotta do what he’s gotta do when wooing a girl who IS one.)5. Follow your passions - whether it’s your love life or your future.“Screw pandits and star charts and prophecies. Sometimes you have to trust yourself and let destiny follow.’”Winnie has these hilarious dreams with Shah Rukh Khan (aka the King of Bollywood), where she’s placed in one of his iconic movie scenes. A lot of the time it’s him giving her life advice through quotes from his own movies (LOL). It was a really great addition though, because it added a layer of dialogue to her introspection on how to forge her decisions and actions. Her passion in film was very evident in her film critic blog and dedication to the film club, but her love life was not so clear. Although I can’t relate to Winnie on the emphasis of romance during senior year, I was super empathetic with her thoughts on the future. I loved that she put her foot down when Raj tried to convince her to sacrifice her dream school. And while some parts of this aspect of the story were unrealistic to me (can’t way because of spoilers), I thought it was the perfect fit to the story’s overall atmosphere and tone.Finishing this book just made me want to watch more Bollywood movies. MY SO-CALLED BOLLYWOOD LIFE was delightful and full of fun. Sharma writes a sugar-sweet story of a high school senior trying to pave her own destiny, and finding love on the way. It’s light and lovely and bursts with character development and swoony times. 11/10 would recommend contemporary readers to pick this one up!

This novel was so good!! I found myself engrossed in the story and tried to find time at home and work to squeeze more chapters in. I did not know much about Bollywood, but the way the movie themes and actors were woven into the story were easy to follow. I could relate with the main character’s conflict between what her family hoped for her and what she wanted to herself. I appreciated that Winnie found a way to figure out both. I would definitely recommend this book. I couldn’t put it down!

If you want a fun YA contemporary that makes you laugh, you need to read this book. It is such a sweet fun story that made me smile throughout the entire book

I was not disappointed. I loved how effortlessly this book captured Indian culture in an American high schooler’s life. So many wonderfully relatable moments!

This is a really cute book.It took me about 30 pages to actually get into it, but once I did, I was all in. My only little nitpick was that there are a lot of dream sequences. Now, I totally admit that I'm not really into Bollywood - maybe that's a Bollywood thing? But other than the dreams, I just loved the book (and yes, there's totally a dance number!!!).I adored Winnie and loved the fact that she was so cool with her heritage. This isn't one of those books where brown girl rebels against her heritage, falls in love with generic white boy, and then after misadventure, finally embraces her culture (thank god). Instead, Winnie is just perfect Indian/American teen who gets sometimes angsty (but not enough to make you throw the book against the wall), is falling for the wrong boy (who is soooo totally right), and has the most awesome BFF you ever want to meet. And she digs her own culture.Her family is adorable as well.I learned a lot about modern Indian culture, a lot about Bollywood, and now I'm waiting for my own dance number to start. (And....cue the crickets because that's so not happening!)So, a seriously fun book that will appeal to YA readers of all cultures. And now I need to rent a couple of the films mentioned in the book!Note: I originally gave this book 4 stars (the dream sequences), but amended my rating to five stars. Why? Because I've been smiling all day because of this book and now I seriously want to watch Bollywood. Much love for this one!
