I don't normally post or read reviews on textbooks, as you don't really have a choice in the purchase. However, you do have a choice in format, so it's worth providing feedback on the format for potential purchases, and perhaps the publishers will listen as well.I purchase all my textbooks in eCopy when available, as the benefits fit my needs. The most notable of which is being able to read the material on multiple devices. It's really one of the fundamental benefits of eBooks. I routinely use my personal computer, Kindle Fire, and work computer to read textbooks. This is the first textbook that I've ever purchased that is restricted to 2 computers. I assumed that meant you couldn't run them at the same time, but actually you can't have them loaded on more than 2 computers; you have to deregister a device if you accidentally load it on the wrong one and hit your limit. That, or it recommended that I simply purchase a second copy. "Buy Once, Study Anywhere"? Not really. Yes, I can work around it and just restrict myself to 2 devices, but it's asinine to have to do so. Amazon has these Kindle programs locked down pretty tight, I'm sure they can see they're all my registered devices. I'm not passing my books on to other students, and I can't even sell off a used copy when done. I haven't purchased any other textbooks that felt a need to impose this kind of restriction. This experience has certainly been in support of good ole printed copy.In addition to the licensing problem, the digital copy looks like it was just scanned in on an old xerox. Or maybe that's what the printed copy of this book looks like? Mine is all in black and white, and the text isn't adjustable like most Kindle formats. I could have saved a lot of money just buying a cheap used version and scanning it myself.

I give this two stars because of the Kindle format, not because of the marketing content. The content is decent: it's thorough, a bit dry, and up-to-date.The Kindle format, though, is frustrating. First, it's fixed pages, not flowing text. I understand that perhaps some professors value page numbers, but scrolling as if this were a scanned PDF gets very old. Another big problem is that it's limited to TWO devices. This is very irritating, as I cannot read it wherever I wish, which rather spoils the point of having an e-book. No other textbook of mine has this low of a limit. Also, you are not allowed to change the font or even the color scheme.I hope the publisher reads this book and then decides to conduct some of it's touted market research on the students who buy this book. Perhaps the publisher will discover that students expect a modern e-book, not a glorified PDF.UPDATE: I de-registered one of my Kindle for PC instances so I could read this on my phone and discovered that the publisher will not allow it on Kindle for Android, even if I have an available license. It's also not available on the Kindle Cloud Reader! So basically, I don't get to read this unless I'm Officially Parked At My Desk to Read the One Book I Can't Read Anywhere Else (TM).

The focus was very heavy on the personal side of his program, and frankly you are assumed to know what the food looks like from his prior books and therefore he doesn't go much into it. He however, does tell you about the latest research on how a plant based diet works in many areas of your health and life. Frankly, I was hoping for a lot less Woo and even more science. And that was my disappointment. He also has swung away from the Spectrum concept and tries to convince you that even one higher fat meal will hurt you. It did surprise me that he continues to claim that no other diet has been proven to reverse heart disease. This just isn't true, and considering how much research he does into this area he must know it isn't true. We have the 2005 study done by a major medical university in Israel that studied heart disease reversal using three diets. The first was low fat (really 30%) the 2nd was the Med diet, and the 3rd was a low carb diet of all things. All three showed reversal of heart disease. And yes, there was weight loss in all three groups. However, the correlation with reversal didn't come from weight loss. In other words those who lost the most weight didn't have the most reversal. The researchers DID find a direct correlation of one single factor when it came to reversal of heart disease, and that was with Systolic blood pressure. The more systolic blood pressure fell the greater was the reversal. Thanks to these researchers we now know the mechanism for heart disease reversal. How is it that all three diets saw drops in Systolic blood pressure and therefore reversal? That's fairly simple. What all three diets had in common was elimination of processed food, and therefore the 80% of salt that the average person eats. It was salt restriction that led to the drop in blood pressure and therefore the reversal of disease. It was interesting that it wasn't animal products, or for that matter fat regardless of saturated or otherwise. Does this make sense? Well, way back in the 30's, 40's and 50'l a guy by the name of Walter Kempner reversed kidney disease, deadly high blood pressure and heart failure by restricting sodium to under 60 mg a day. He diet was white rice, fruit and almost a thousand calories of white sugar. Once he retired those that took over became less restrictive on other vegetable, some meat and fish, BUT they maintained the low sodium aspect of the diet. It still worked using 500 mg of sodium a day. They had the same success. We then had the Inter-salt study. The handful of societies that consumed under 1,200 mg of sodium a day had no high blood pressure, no heart disease, no kidney disease and no type 2. IT'S THE SALT. Is his program a good one? Sure. Plant based is good, but plant exclusive (vegan) is not absolutely necessary. He never gets around to explaining how the Blue Zones folks in various parts of the world live to be one hundred without being vegan, or for that matter low fat. The fat consumed ranges anywhere from fifteen percent to forty percent depending on which Blue Zone area you consider. And of course almost all of them are omnivore.

I've been following the Whole Foods, Plant Based lifestyle doctors for a few months now. I ran across a podcast of Dr. and Mrs. Ornish recently and loved what I heard. This prompted me to buy the book. I have to say now that the WFPB lifestyle has been tremendous in reversing and healing issues I've had for years.The book is packed with great information on eating, moving, de-stressing, and loving. Plain and simple advice for living a healthy life. Lots of great recipes, too. There is a lot of scientific information and studies presented that really backs up this lifestyle.The only issue I have is that the book continuously promotes their program. This would be a bad thing, but there are no venues anywhere close to where I live (mid-north Tennessee). Insurance may cover their program, but I doubt my insurance will pay for me to travel somewhere distant to take it. With it promoting the benefits of the program, I feel I am missing out; that I'm only getting partial information since I can't participate in the program. Especially with the group benefits. And, there wasn't any contact information on their site for those of us wanting to ask questions about it; only for booking.While I love the book, I think I would prefer less promoting of the program and keep the book to what you can do from the book.

After owning, using, and enjoying most of Dr Ornish's books, I truly believe this one is his best. I've read through and the recipes appear very doable and delicious. His material is substantiated with special and extraordinary scientific studies. However I'm finding his 2 week starting plan where you can use frozen food dinners etc. to be especially helpful. Since I'm a heart patient, I believe this book will be my next guide to better health. I'll update this offering after I've begun this helpful guide to better a refreshing lifestyle.

There are a total of 101 pages in this book, but only 21 of the pages I found to have useful content, such as puzzles, games, cultural facts about Puerto Rico, etc. 30 pages comprised of diary pages where you fill in the date, the weather, a journal entry, and draw a picture. There are another 10 pages for reflection and coloring upon arriving home. The other 60 pages are checklists or lists of some sort, a packing list, a list of people you want to send post card to, size conversions, (which don't apply to Puerto Rico), puzzles/games, and the answer keys. Just buy a blank diary and find a good travel with children website.

Excellent travel journal for kids. Has about 14 days and each day asks what the date is, weather, gives space to write about your day, asks what the funniest thing that happened, the best food of the day, and what they liked best about the day. They also leave a page to add a drawing or picture for each day. There are games for the flight and down time too.

I have lived in the Dominican Republic for 22 years. This book has some good information about the country, but it also has MANY blank "journal" pages. My suggestion as someone who lives in the DR: Look up info on the country online and review it as a family. Then, just buy your child a journal notebook. The book is overpriced for the content (lack of).

I'll be heading to Alaska in 2017 for 3 weeks. Wanted something compact to record my thoughts about my trip. This will be perfect! Also has puzzles (with the answers in the back), that will be too simple for me, but I can work them with my grandkids.The journal part of the book is laid out in a 2-page spread...on the left there is room for the date, a small space to describe the weather and several lines to fill in with "What we did today". There are 3 lines at the bottom of the page with "Cool food of the day", "What I liked best today" and "Funny thing of the day." The right page has the title "Draw something you saw today" with a large frame underneath. At the bottom of the right page it says, "My picture is of:" That last thing will be good for me since I can't draw to save my soul and most things I do draw don't look much like what they are supposed to be.There's a list of websites you can use to research more about Alaska and pages to list what you'd like to see or places you'd like to visit. There are also 2 pages devoted to listing the names and addresses of people you'd like to send post cards too.The small size (7.5" wide x 9.25" tall and about 1/4" thick) will make it easy to slip into my backpack.

These were a gift for visiting children. They loved the journals! Both children explored with excitement to find the perfect subject for the day's journal entries.

Well received by grandchildren. They'll keep records of their many travels.

In 2005, Linda Belleville, Craig Blomberg, Craig Keener, and Thomas Schreiner came together and helped produce Two Views on Women in Ministry. The book is about what the Bible says about women’s roles in the church. It fits into a series entitled “Counterpoints” (Zondervan) and presents clear and systematic arguments for two sides of the issue. One view, presented by Belleville and Keener, is that the Bible is egalitarian and presents equal opportunities for both genders within public worship and church offices. The other view, presented by Blomberg and Schreiner, is complementarian and argues for a distinction based on gender. The format is that each scholar presents their research and is critiqued by the three other scholars. At the time of publication, all four were evangelical New Testament scholars who held seminary faculty positions. Refreshingly, the introduction includes this statement from editor James R. Beck: “We believe one can build a credible case within the bounds of orthodoxy and a commitment to inerrancy for either one of the two major views we address in this volume, although all of us view our own positions on the matter as stronger and more compelling (15).” The logic of the authors is well organized, and there is a spirit of unity in their respective contributions.Blomberg is the first to present the complementarian position (self-described as “about as close as you can get to being a full-fledged egalitarian without actually becoming one”) and it’s interesting to note he claims 90-plus percent agreement with Belleville’s exegesis (119). His analysis of Genesis 1-3 is that there are “hints of a divinely intended male headship in God’s original scheme”—not a consequence of the fall (132). Although Adam and Eve “bear God’s image equally as unique stewards,” Eve’s designation as helper places her in a subordinate role (130). His overall presentation is that male headship is timeless and women are restricted but only from the highest ministerial office, citing the fact that we have no record of women in the high priesthood or office of apostle. According to Blomberg, Junia was a church planter—not an apostle. From Romans 16 he deduces that women had leadership roles but it “outruns the evidence to claim we know they were formal pastors or elders (150).” Differing from other complementarians, Blomberg concludes that beyond the office of priesthood and apostle, there “do not appear to be any other restrictions on women in public leadership in ancient Israel (133).” In Acts, the Holy Spirit indwelled and empowered all for ministry, regardless of gender. Church history affirms women deacons, granting leadership roles (148). Perhaps a succinct analysis of his position is that women are allowed to preach so long as it is delegated by an all-male eldership, but she may not assume the “highest office” of authority and responsibility in the settled life of the congregation (158). He affirms hierarchy and male headship, granting preaching to women under the authority of elders, but ultimately concluding that the only men should lead in an authoritative way.From both sides, the arguments are well made and backed with thorough engagements with the biblical text. The format is clear and easy to follow, and you can’t help but appreciate the overall peaceful tone of the book as a whole. Belleville was stimulating but a bit forceful in argumentation and patronizing toward complementarians. Blomberg was disarming and fair, offering the most balanced approach of the four writers. Keener took an unconventional but helpful approach in the discussion, and his transcultural argument asked good, meaningful questions. Schreiner’s critiques of the three authors were concise and helpful, but some of his statements on male headship were stiff and overshadowed better arguments.

This book provides a detailed and well researched presentation of the two primary views on women in ministry.There is a lot of historical and Scriptural information over this subject and regardless of one's opinion, everyone can learn something new and helpful about this subject. Blomberg's essay is written with clarity and in my opinion it is the most interesting and helpful.The author considers what authority means and discusses important biblical passages that church leaders (whether they are men or women) often tend to forget.Each view is represented by two contributors. Linda Belleville and Craig Keener represent the egalitarian view (equal ministry opportunity for both genders), Craig Blomberg and Thomas Schreiner represent the complementarian view (ministry role restrictions for women)All the three scholars discuss what leadership positions women can hold in the Church and express their opinion about leadership and its meaning within the family.At the end of each essay, every author comment on each other's essay.It is very interesting to note that there is a considerable disagreement between the two complementarian scholars' position. This aspect can encourage the reader to reflect and analyze the Scriptures even further and better understand a different conclusion over the issue.Personally, I find it refreshing that the strictest traditional position, held by Scheiner, does not see a scriptural basis to prevent women from serving during Communion or from leading in prayers or Scripture reading when the Christian Congregation gather to worship.I am glad that the Christian woman Scheiner promotes is an active woman in the church and he sees her in the role of deacon, missionary, patron and prophet.

I found this to be an extremely interesting and informative book, as all of the Zondervan Counterpoint books have been. I think it could have been accurately labeled as Three Views of Women in Ministry, since the book contains proponents of three distinct views--the traditional view that women are not to be involved in authoritative preaching or ruling over men in the church, the view that women can be involved in every ministry in the church except senior pastor (Craig Blomberg) and the view that women can be involved in every role in the church (Craig Keener and Linda Belleville). Although I started reading the book believing the traditional view, I believe all three views are very well argued and shown to have solid biblical support. For anyone who is interested in exploring this issue personally, or for any church that is considering this issue, I highly recommend this book as a worthwhile investment in time.

Five stars!!!! This book was so good i just couldn't put it down. Wow! I just loved the characters, the story and the bad guys, too. Im a big Pike/Jennifer fan and this book really showed them at their best. I found all the different locals interesting. The plot was complex and honestly i just went along for the ride. Bad guys are really devious! And, as usual, the ending came up and i yelled, "no, no, noooooo!!! Don't end here! !!!" Cant wait for more!

I suspect maybe a few folks who don't tolerate scientific inaccuracy might have been put off by the "Red Mercury" red-herring. If they got beyond that (it is accurately explained away early in the book), they discovered another great Pike Logan thriller. I really liked the development of the character of the "daughter of war." By the end of the book, I found her almost tragically plausible because of the history into which she was born, yet very savvy, very brave, and excepionaly likable. She almost "stole the book" from Pike and Jennifer! (I'd love to see her in some subsequent book.) I only have one minor criticism. I'd like to see Taylor explore and develop more of the Jennifer/Pike relationship, and I'd like to see Jennifer get more emphasis. She is feminine AND tough, believable and a very strong character with whom I have "fallen in love." I was initially a bit concerned about a sole one-star review, but very glad I bought it. Keep 'em coming, Col. Taylor, PLEASE! !!!

Sooo good! This latest Task Force op is the best so far. I know, I say that after every one of Colonel Taylor's nail biters, but this one shows the amazing Pike Logan as something more than just a badass operator. He has a lot of things on his plate this time as well as a brave little girl who stole his heart with her survival skills against the most dangerous of obstacles. Gorgeous, deadly Knuckles saves the day in a surprising twist you won't want to miss. A MUST READ!

I really enjoyed Daughter of War! Brad Taylor has done another excellent job developing engaging characters, writing thrilling intersecting plot lines, and carefully researching everything relevant to the book. I read a lot of novels (mostly thrillers and mysteries). I particularly enjoy reading long term series by authors like Brad Taylor, who make such a significant personal investment in growing the characters. I also appreciate the commitment to choosing current and relevant topics to address in the books. I can't wait for the next Pike Logan high adventure!

The book started out slow, and I almost put it aside, but the plot and special character Amena really began to kick it up. It is best just to suspend belief and let Amena's exploits give you a thrill. One aspect of her character, though, that is entirely believable, is the development of her extreme resourcefulness in order to survive as a Syrian war refugee. I appreciated the insight into this Syrian tragedy.

The author and his team research locations like movie scouting, so you can visualize them from his descriptions.As much as I like the whole Pike Logan team, it is the main supporting character, like Shoshana, but in this case Amena, who I like the best. I won’t spoil this for other readers, but I hope we see more of Amena in the next book, as I am fascinated with her.

Loved this newest addition of the Pike Logan story. Had to make a long cross country drive over the past week and downloaded the audible (excellently done by Rich Orlow) Made the drive such an enjoyment that I didn't want to stop - except when fuel level demanded. Do yourself a favor and add the audio. The characters really come to life with Mr Orlow's talent for voices and perfect timing for the smart a$$ banter from the task force team memebers

This is my first Pike Logan book, and might be my last. It was okay, but just okay.My biggest issues are with the writing (very dry, with a lot of “telling, not showing) and the predictable plot line. There are some very fine thriller writers out there (Silva, Baldacci, Thor), but I didn’t find Daughter of War to be to their standards. The best characters were the little Syrian refugee and her brother, although their actions and inclusion was unrealistic. The rest of the characters seemed to be coasting on relationships built in previous books, without any effort being made to develop them or engage a new reader in this installment.

Love the book and concept...however, nothing turns me off faster than reading away and hitting a roadblock that catches my eye and brain such as a grammatical error or punctuation where it shouldn’t be...it interferes with my flow of reading and learning...just a few pages in...I had to stop twice and re read what I read to find it isn’t me, but mistakes in the (publishing ?).If you want to write a book to affect powerful people, be powerful yourself in making sure there are no mistakes when published.

Grammatical issues aside I was hoping for a little more insight and in formation about affirmations. (they were very short and simplistic) The emphasis seems to be on woman's rights more than on affirmations and manifesting. Yes, strong woman and their accomplishments are inspiring but this doesn't seem to relate to the average woman enough for my taste. I am all for activism but maybe a book on affirmations is not an appropriate platform. There are some great quotes and inspiring stories - if that's what you're interested in this is an excellent resource.

Clear your mind of preconceived notions of "badass". Devour the affirmations in this writing. Apply these to your life and your life only. In so doing, you will gain deeper insight into who you are and the courage to become who you wish to be.

I found the text encouraging and I like the idea of having a quick look into the lives of women who have shown courage. The quotations were inspirational. In actuality, I liked the premise and the title better than the book, but it had its moments and was still worth the read.

I bought the kindle version of this book. I am finding it really cool. I like the short tidbits about amazing women... Some well-known and others more obscure to me. I like how the affirmations are interspersed - some are common and other feel particularly powerful for women. I am going to send one to my best friends across the country from me. She is badass and sometimes needs a reminder, too! I think it would look pretty good on a bookshelf. :)

The book was not what I originally was looking for but it turned out to be a good quick read. The book is.more of a confidence booster than a knowledge gainer.

Thomas W. Malone is the Patrick J. McGovern Professor of Management, a professor of information technology, and a professor of work and organizational studies at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He is also the founding director of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence and was one of the two founding co-directors of the MIT Initiative on "Inventing the Organizations of the 21st Century." Malone is the author of The Future of Work and more than 100 articles, research papers, and book chapters. He has also been a cofounder of four software companies; an inventor on 11 patents; and a co-editor of four books.

This book has had such an impact in our work, my colleagues and I are completely restructuring our project around the perspective of superminds and collective intelligence offered by Prof. Malone. In fact, the book has become a must-read for anyone joining our organization, as it is the most comprehensive tool available for onboarding people to a collective project.Prof. Malone offers a holistic approach to analyzing mechanisms in which groups of people working alongside with machines can be more effective. He introduces the works and findings by the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence in a highly digestible format at the reach of non-academics, while offering references to specific papers and studies at the same time. He explores empirical evidence and existing projects solving real problems by harnessing the potential of groups of people working towards a common goal.The book offers a perspective on the world... a frame of reference by which it is possible to understand why the world is what it is by analyzing the ways in which people, corporations, governments and all sorts of entities interact. MIT Prof Tom Malone has been examining the nuances, intricacies, structures and patterns of coordination in organizations for several decades. Building on a professional lifetime of serious academic work, consulting, teaching and entreprenuring in this space, Tom has used this new book titled Superminds to pull together his many years of thinking on these topics, as well as to expand his thinking on how interconnected collections of people and collections of computers can come together to achieve levels of intelligence that can exceed the levels of intelligence that can realized when only computers or only humans are involved.The book is well written, and easily digestible for a broad public and practitioner audience. For those who are simultaneously interested in understanding 1) the potential for Computing and IT to increase the intelligence and capability of an organization (or any purposeful group of people), and 2) how the organization of work itself must be rethought and realigned to realize this potential, you will find this a highly informative book.The book does not go into technical details of how advanced IT or AI works. Tom very thoughtfully summarizes the essential aspects of this that are required for the points he makes. As such, the book is especially useful for those in organizations and other groups (private or public sector, or social sector) who want to read something that will seriously and thoughtfully help them understand and position for new possibilities in how group work and large-scale organizational work may evolve in the years to come.

I am posting this review for my husband, who read the book. Even though he has an Amazon account, we purchase through the Prime account that I own. Amazon, therefore, won't let him post his review under his account because "he" hasn't bought anything. A rant for another day. Here's the review ...In his newest book, Professor Malone defines a supermind to be a group of individuals working together in ways that seem to be intelligent. Building from this definition he writes a broadly accessible story opening our eyes to several important trends. Malone points out that superminds have been with us for a long time. What is new is their scale, inclusiveness and access to the vast stores of data and knowledge made possible by computer mediation and vastly faster communications speeds. He gives interesting examples of how superminds are on the verge of making smarter hierarchies, democracies, marketplaces, communities, and even ecosystems along with insights from his and others’ research including the discovery that the more women involved in a supermind the better they perform (perhaps up to 100%).Culture, economies, religions and technology all spring from supermind-like collaborations, some of which are as tightly knit as the family, others as vast as nation states. However, sometimes it seems we are like fish in the sea, and can hardly notice the water in which we swim. Looking through the lens Malone provides we see with new eyes that schools, churches, armies, political parties, and governments, essentially everything in our world is made of groups of people, working together to solve problems and advance their interests. More and more, all of these groups are using communication and computing technologies to help them achieve their goals. Superminds are everywhere!How did we fail to notice these groups as something particularly special? Sometimes it comes down to just having a name. Naming is the first important thing Malone brings to our awareness; that, and that superminds are everywhere and that we are, and always have been immersed in them. They are power.Beyond theory and broad examples, Malone discusses practical ways that superminds can and are being used to make smarter decisions, ranging from strategic business plans to global actions for climate change. He describes these emerging methods as a kind of cyber-human strategy machine, which enables huge groups to participate in creating new ideas and allows their voices in the evaluations and implementations thereby broadening the whole definition of a world community.A particularly interesting example from the book is the use of “Contest Webs” in the Climate Colaboratory’s non-hierarchical proposal process. By modeling the way supply chains work with multiple higher-level integrators in market economies this proposal process allows subprojects from multiple proposers to be included in competing higher level projects, which essentially creates a knowledge supply chain financially supported by several winning, higher level projects. This has benefits in knowledge sharing and cost controls and might be widely useful in proposal processes more generally.He closes with an exploration of what such a supermind might want, and suggests that it should want to be wise, not just smart and powerful, saying that “exploring space, advancing science and art, developing intelligent machines and exploring new forms of collective human consciousness could all be worthy goals for a wise global mind.”He presents a convincing case that superminds are a bridge to an unimaginable future, even as he suggests that our jobs are not immediately at risk. He may be overly optimistic. The world is likely to be alive with computational minds sooner than we suppose, even if it seems farfetched today. Quibbles about the time aside, we surely stand on the cusp of such machines.Malone wrote this book to capture this moment between mostly human superminds and a new world with intelligent and potentially wise, potentially non-human superminds – a world that we little understand and can hardly envision, which is why his book is interesting and important.Perhaps his future research will examine how criminal organizations, too, are superminds and so are evil governments and war-criminal militaries. History suggests that, like individual human minds, these broader superminds can also be mentally deranged. The subject deserves a much deeper look; there is much to be studied and much yet to be published. Certainly, the benefits and risks of including at least a few humans in superminds must be closely examined; in moments of conflict, hybrid superminds may be too timid, or to slow to prevail.Indeed, the program OpenAI Five recently [Science (361) 6403 pp 632-633, 17 August, 2018] beat a team of professional players (i.e., a hybrid-supermind) in the game Data2, a popular, online combat/strategy game, with millions of players around the world. That OpenAI Five already plays at, or beyond superhuman levels against such a ‘supermind’ should makes us considerably more interested the questions Malone raises.Let us hope that we jointly manage to create “insanely great” superminds, not plain, old-fashioned insane ones, and that we are prepared to control the risks as humans cede more and more control to the computational parts of these superminds.--George Davidson

this is a shocker to come from the faculty at MIT. It does have some interesting references, but the tone and content are overstatement, speculation and hype.

We are running an open source project called Advanced Algos, about a crowd of developers and traders developing trading bots and putting them to compete between each other. After competing, the source code is opened and the crowd can fork the winners, creating an environment of rapid bot evolution. Once we though we had it all, we came across Superminds, which helped us understand that if we as a project (supermind) organize ourselves with the right tools and seek maximizing our collective intelligence, we are at the same time minimizing the time needed for a "Superalgo" (able to outperform everyone at the markets) to emerge. Congratulations Professor Malone!
