The historical information regarding the climate of the times in the pre-World War I US, combined with the tale of Lusitania's final voyage, was extremely fascinating. The main characters were interesting, but I thought the plotting was somewhat heavy-handed. I enjoyed the ambiguity of the ending, however.I was inclined to give the book only 3 stars (wishing I could give it 3 1/2), but the inclusion of the author's great grandfather, who actually was aboard during the fateful voyage, made me upgrade to 4, wishing for 4 1/2. He was great, very real, and quite the hero. His story came down to the author through his daughter, her grandmother. I loved him, and would love to have known him.Definitely recommended!

The research incorporated into this novel was the main reason I read this book. But the plot concerning Brooke, Sydney and Edward seemed to be targeted towards young adults. Brooke was too silly to be taken seriously and Edward so veddy English and sexless. Sydney trying to be a feminist also seemed artificial to me and this caused a boring read. There were too many uninteresting parts that made me want to start skipping pages. The ending was not very realistic either concerning Edward and Sydney and their great love affair. Too bad as the premise was interesting.

This is a beautiful poingient novel written by Kim Izzo. This author has a beautiful sense of story. It is a wonderful meldiing of fact and fiction. Her writing style is sublime. She can put you smack dab in the scene, whether Sydney is walking up some metal stairs and runs smack dab into the locked gate....you are there with her. She captured the importance of the first class opulence and in many ways their self ascribed thoughts that they were better than everyone 'beneath them in station' and the vast difference between the cultures and incomes.It did feel to me as though the ending was a bit abrupt. It left me hanging. I wanted so to know that Edward made it through the war and that the wounds had been healed and that they all lived past that week or so after the sinking.I would recommend this book.

What an exciting and tragic story. Comparing it to terrorism like the 911 tragedy made it more real. I never knew there was a pre Bletchley Park, but it is so difficult to know all history without the aide of such authors.I did find it difficult to believe in 1917 a woman's past would not be held against her.

I have read several non fiction books about the sinking of the Lusitania, and this seemed quite true to actual events. I couldn’t put it down.

I liked the story. I had never read much about the Lusitania disaster, so this was interesting. I was a little disapointed in the ending, but after thinking about it, I decided it was a realistic ending after all.

This was an excellent book. It started off a little slow ,but then once all the characters were introduced everything started to fall into place. I could not put this book down.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a romance novel but with historical fact in there also. I could just picture the poor souls on that fated ship, how horrible it must have been for them. It was interesting to learn what was the norm for women at that time, we've come a long way baby!! If in fact the English, or should I say Churchill, more or less let this happen to get America into the conflict, that's pretty sad. All in all a very interesting read, if you like historical novels, then I highly recommend this one!

Intrigued by minds that are fixated on the literal "word", while ignoring the frailities of those who at a later date set down the oral history of some of the greatest prophet-philosopher-gods. As a Catholic, I was only too aware of the way the mysogyny of the interpreters of the original gospel texts altered orifginal transcriptions and skewed and censored out portions of the oral history that clashed with their views of the world. Within Christianity there has probably been more research of all existing texts and documents to see that "The Word" has been distorted in ways that have not served either humanity as a whole or the message of Christ. It would be an error to assume that similar alterations did not occurr in all major religions whose written texts appears years after their prophets waked the face of the earth. Much like history which is often the story of the victor with no in depth understanding of the vanquished who is generally demonized by the author of any text, the history of man is altered the same way. It take a lot of reading to ferret out texts that tell the other side of any story in a way to obtain a clearer picture of what was occuring; and even with this effort any reader has to acknowledge that the predujices of the reader and the reader's culture often colors the final conclusion.This is a very engagng book, and offers a compelling theory of what lead societies and cultures to descend into periods of total madness and depths of terror and mayhem that have always made us despair in our capacity to inflict unspeakable horrors and genocide of those identified as "others", "heretics" and "infidels": and our quickness to demonize those who fail to see the world the way we see it.Thought provoking this text alters the way we think about our global history. He advances the reality that Babylonian captivity was God’s way of ironically purging idolatry from Israel. When they learn their lesson, he delivers them, and often he does so through the example of wise, devout followers, and even prophets. Riddles like the statue and the meaning of “mene mene tekel uparsin” (you’re numbered, you’re numbered, you’ve been found wanting, you’ll be divided) are handled well, and without a know-it-all sense secret knowledge of by the author. His casual, but reverent tone encourages to understand the basics of these sometimes cryptic events, and shines lights on details that place the story in a relevant context.In humility, Whitworth openly admits that handling the vision of Daniel frightened him, because of it’s mystery, and the conviction with which many people have differing interpretations of the vision. But he does not avoid the vision. He heeds his own warning, that one should not be literal with apocalyptic writing, or become too dogmatic with interpretation, or get so wrapped up in the details that we miss the vision. He unashamedly decries the slanderous lies of false prophets like Edgar Whisenant and William Miller. In General, Whitworth sticks to the common, well-supported general interpretation that the mutant beasts in the vision represent empire, likely the empires of Babylon, Media-Persia, Greece and Rome, but is open to variation of that running motif. What is certain, he concludes, is that the Christ is the end of the vision, and his victory is forever.Whitworth also reminds us that Daniel’s story is not mean to teach us that will always save us from physical harm if we pray hard and obey him, but rather to teach us that God is always in control, always with us, no matter what befalls us. “[God] did not deliver [Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego] from the fire, but in the fire.” Prayer, says Whitworth, is not a last minute resort, but our greatest weapon against false empire and against persecution: “Rebellion acknowledges the power of the state, while prayer appeals to a higher power whose ultimate will cannot be thwarted.” Prayer is not primarily meant to get us out of horrible situations, but to get us through them.The human psyche is a fascinating study, and Whitworth’s is not a book on the subject, he touches on the psychological aspects of God’s followers and enemies alike. The demented ego of the rulers that Daniel faces are speculated on with the angle of God’s punishment for their self-absorbed attitudes, their decadent bravado.The flaws in his book are minor: He does at times lean more toward the idea that God “created” human governments, and seems too certain that humanity has progressively gotten worse and worse since Creation, whereas to many it also seems that humanity goes back and forth. I purchased the Derision of Heaven on a Friday, and I was so engrossed in this work that I finished it on Sunday afternoon. Michael Whitworth has a unique gift as a writer in the Christian genre. I have read numerous Christian authors, but Michael's approach to scholarship is one of the most alluring I've encountered in this day & age. Michael makes studying the Bible fun & exciting. Without question, the Bible is the most fascinating piece of literature that has ever been composed because its author is also the author of all creation. The prophecies in the latter part of the Book of Daniel has always been an area that I'm little intimidated to study. However, with Michael's approach, I'm finding that this is no longer the case. Man, I've been missing out! This is great stuff, & is so very useful in regards to the dilemma we're facing as Christians in America. Thank you, Michael Whitworth, & may God continue to bless you as you use your gift in service to his Kingdom!

The book of Daniel tends to be a very difficult to understand writing broken down into figurative, literal, and apocalyptic verbiage. Sometimes, we quickly read past the inherent meanings trying to decipher the understanding. With the Derision of Heaven, Michael takes this writing and breaks it down to a simplistic approach of getting to know Daniel and his role as a prophet. It would benefit all that study the book of Daniel to spend a few hours or days engaged in reading this modern day commentary.

The writer has achieved something that many writers struggle with in their interpretation of difficult prophetic Bible books such as Daniel. He has made the points that are able to be clearly seen and not committed himself to interpretations that are not so clear in Daniel. The everyday Bible student will receive much by reading this guide and I recommend it.

Michael Whitworth is one of the best Christian authors! This was the first book (commentary) of Michael's that I read and I had a hard time putting it down once I started. His intention is to write a commentary for each book of the Bible. If you want a better understanding of God's word, start reading Michael's commentaries. I'm anxiously awaiting the next one!!!

Michael's book and the workbook to go with it are a great addition to your library. If you want a thorough study of the book of Daniel and how it relates to the coming of Christ and His kingdom and be able to study it at your own pace, make your own notes and really get deep into the subjects covered, this is the book to do just that. Since we can't go back in time to see the Orson Welles theatre productions of note, we can at least read the scripts to see how he cut them and read the insightful notes by Richard France about the productions. There could have been more pictures, but oh well, the thrust is the text of the scripts, VOODO MACBETH, CAESAR and FIVE KINGS.
