After reading this book, base on my past experience of injuries and failed attempts to stay active as an athlete, the principles in this book truly makes sense. I highly recommend this book to especially those young athletes who naturally is an explosive athlete. Defitnately will help prolong your career. Had I had a program like this in high school I defitnately would have stayed healthy and kept the interest of some D1 colleges.

Good read! Donny seems to have a great all-around approach and a focus on continuous improvement in an almost Kaizen-for-the-body approach to improving athlete performance. He is humble in mentioning his own failings and how they changed and shaped his views lend credibilit, too. Very informed!

I’m not a hard core athlete, but definitely try to keep in shape and keep pushing myself to improve. I wish I had this book years ago, as it would have helped me to workout and train smarter, and I could have avoided so many setbacks and injuries. It’s easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to apply. Definitely a must-read for anyone who wants to up their game!

This book is a solid foundational start for all athletes (high school, collegiate, professional). Easy to read and follow, Mateaki does an outstanding job providing examples (professional athletes, pictures, personal stories, etc.) and context behind the development of the methods presented. I wish I had this knowledge throughout my own athletic career. Definitely, provides out of the box athletic training philosophies. Also, speaks on mental preparation and the "Attack Mentality". If you're looking for improved performance and longevity, this is a great book to pick up!

Packt Publishing, in 2018 released “Practical Cyber Intelligence” by Wilson Bautista Jr. a retired military officer who holds the position of Director of IT and InfoSec at i3 Microsystems.I found this book to be very informative, easy to read as well as easy to follow once I engaged it. One of the key aspects that captured my attention pertained to the vital information and moreover the perspective into information security that is rarely discussed or examined in recent offerings. As a practitioner in the information security field, this book can serve as a handbook for team leads, managers, directors and CISOs responsible for securing organizational assets. As an educator of information security, this book can serve as a key role in courses dealing with in the management of information security as a possible text, but definitely as supplemental reading text.The author asks a lot of questions to help the reader think of the problems organizations have to face when tasked to protect their assets, but he also answered a great deal of questions to aid the reader in understanding solutions to those very problems. One such example that hit home with me existed in chapter 1 in the section titled “Intelligence drives operations”. Here Bautista explained the concept of “Priority Information Requirements (PIRs)” in military use and used a commercial, non-military example of the concept to illustrate how it fits in the information security arena. These are the real world examples that it a joy to read and increased my over knowledge in the field.The table of content represented an orderly and organized method to following the text. The first few chapters provided information and historical references to build a foundational concepts of the overall topic. Each chapter literally builds on top of the next chapter while reinforcing information from the previous chapter in conjunction to building new knowledge and concepts the further you read.The body of the book consist of fifteen (15) well-written chapters with the last chapter being more of a conclusion/wrap-up chapter.Below is a summary of each chapter:Chapter 1, The Need for Cyber Intelligence – Bautista does an excellent job explaining to the reader the reason why organizations need to incorporate a cyber intelligence component into their organization’s cyber security posture. He then provided a brief history of how intelligence have been used in the military drawing from stories pertaining to the American Revolutionary War and Napoleon’s use of intelligence. Bautista did an excellent job in explaining the different type if intelligence gathering and what information would fall under those categories. This chapter was gratifying and informative as it laid a strong foundation cyber intelligence.Chapter 2, Intelligence Development - Bautista introduced a useful concept in information hierarchy known as “DIKW” which stands for Data, Information, Knowledge and Wisdom. This concept discussed the techniques that would be used to sort through massive data to turn in into actionable intelligence. I found this chapter to be very useful as he provided processes such as “The Intelligence Cycle Steps” that can be mapped to current security data collection procedures in an organization.Chapter 3, Integrating Cyber Intel, Security, and Operations – In this chapter, Bautista introduced and explains the concept of operation security (OPSEC), as well as discussed the concept of developing a strategic cyber intelligence capability by adding the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) into the discussion. Once again, he took the time to explain the OPSEC process, by breaking it down into five (5) steps and examined the model of the cyber intelligence program roles into three (3) sections.Chapter 4, Using Cyber Intelligence to Enable Active Defense – In the chapter, Bautista reintroduced the concept of CMM as well as the Cyber Kill Chain which aids in identifying the actions needed by an adversary to exploit a target. Once again, he provided a detail breakdown of active defense topics which covered a wide range of concepts.Chapter 5, F3EAD For You and For Me – In this chapter, the author introduced the Find, Fix, Finish, Exploit, Analyze, and Disseminate process that is deployed for high value targets and it's applicability to the Cyber Kill Chain. Bautista begins by defining the concept of targeting, then provides a practical scenario where the intelligence cycle and F3EAD were integrated. He also examines many concepts previously discussed as it relates to F3EAD and Cyber Kill Chain.Chapter 6, Integrating Threat Intelligence and Operations – In this chapter, Bautista examines in detail how cyber intelligence can be incorporated in a security program. I enjoyed this chapter due to my familiarity with many of the processes, actions and concepts as an InfoSec practitioner. He discussed the concept of evidence-base knowledge and the tools associated with them. Many topics once again were re-introduced such as CMM and how information gather can be implemented with some popular and commonly used tools.Chapter 7, Creating the Collaboration Capability – In this chapter, the main goal was to explain the process and importance of creating a collaboration capability to support a cyber intelligence program throughout the organization. Some key thoughts discussed were the formal communication such as policies and reports, and informal communications such as working groups and influence. He also explained how communication fits into cyber intelligence and what tools can aid in the process.Chapter 8, The Security Stack – The author provided a view on how information captured from different security capabilities can be developed into cyber intelligence to support decision making. Once again CMM is reintroduced for information security in great detail. This chapter was very informative for the security practitioner.Chapter 9, Driving Cyber Intel – In this chapter, Bautista shared an interesting topic of leveraging the user community as a source of information gathering and reporting. The chapter looks into the importance and usefulness of security awareness and examining the CMM process in detail to drive the security awareness process.Chapter 10, Baselines and Anomalies – In this chapter, Bautista discussed the difficulty of reporting and metrics in operations and continuous monitoring is examined under the CMM concept in great detail.Chapter 11, Putting out the Fires – Bautista introduced the concept of handling anomalies, by discussing ways to improve incident response through developing good intelligence communication channels. The incident response process is explained in detail and once again incorporated into the CMM.Chapter 12, Vulnerability Management – In this chapter, Bautista discussed how an organization can reduce weaknesses through the concept of vulnerability management. He explained in detail once again the under the CMM concept the process of scanning, reporting and managing in conjunction to the scoring systems.Chapter 13, Risky Business and Chapter 14, Assigning – These chapters are closely related as Bautista introduced a broad overview of risk, data classification, risk metrics and key risk indicators under the CMM concept. Some interesting governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) tools are provided to aid with the process.Chapter 15, Wrapping Up – Bautista provided an overall summary of the book and concepts covered within. He described a scenario of an established cyber intelligence program the their operational practices. It is worth reading and it is relatively short.Bautista’s approach in his book “Practical Cyber Intelligence” was comprehensive for both the beginner and seasoned security practitioner regardless of their role. I do think a seasoned professional in leadership will find more value in the text as compared to a Jr. Security Analyst. In addition, as an educator, this text definitely has a role in the academic realm especially in the graduate level.This book is a contribution to the information security community and will surely aid in producing knowledgeable information security leaders and managers in the future. I personally enjoyed chapter 6, Integrating Threat Intelligence and Operations, chapter 11, putting out the Fires and chapter 12, Vulnerability Management the most as I was able to relate from my professional experience. I do recommend that if you are interested in expanding your knowledge in information security or if you are in a leadership role and would like to know more about topic of protecting your organization beyond the traditional manner, this book would be a great source.

I had the opportunity to read Practical Cyber Security and I found it to be a complete and comprehensive playbook for an organizations cyber defense operations. It is a huge departure from today's cursory approach taken by most enterprises and its principals are adaptable within any organization. The author's logical correlation of concepts and unique leadership experience approaches the cyber-security model in a totally new way.

My background in computer technology is very limited and I would consider myself to have nothing more than basic knowledge. I am confident there many, many teenagers who are more proficient than myself. With that being said, Bautista approaches this subject in a language that is easy to follow and understand. Highly recommend.

Take the time to read this excellent book

You must read this book. It provides comprehensive information but in an easy to digest format. Relevant to modern day. Not too technical. Great analogies and examples. I read it the first time in one weekend... couldn't put it down. By the time I was done, I felt like an expert.

There isn't much for me to say other than the book conveys what it needs to convey about cyber intel. Useful for anyone in the tech or digital communications industry.

A buddy recommend the book to me and I ended up finding it very informative. Did not think I would like it as much as I did, but it touched on really great points and there are many things I would like to start to implement.

Great read! Usually I struggle understanding and applying what I've learned through reading a book but this was not the case here. The book is well written and the concepts are explained very well!

About the Author

Dr. Joe Schwarcz is the director of McGill University’s Office for Chemistry and Society. He is the author of The Genie in the Bottle, Radar, Hula Hoops and Playful Pigs, and The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs. “Dr. Joe” also has a weekly radio program and a weekly column in the Montreal Gazette called “The Right Chemistry.” He is the winner of the American Chemical Society’s Stack-Grady Award for interpreting science to the public. I look forward to my Friday mornings. That’s when I spend an hour and a half conversing with the public on CJAD Radio in Montreal. The idea behind the show is for me to provide reliable scientific information, answer questions about current concerns, and attempt to clear up some of the mysteries that permeate daily life. But the show is an education for me, as well. For over twenty years, it has allowed me to monitor the pulse of the population and gain a glimpse into its psyche. I have been pleased by callers who have made unusual scientific observations, elated by those with intriguing questions, and frustrated by the occasional demonstration of scientific illiteracy. I have also come to realize that people are burdened with numerous fears, both rational and irrational. And I have learned not to be surprised. Shocked, maybe ― but never surprised. "How do you wash microwaves out of socks?" one caller queried. I didn’t quite know what to make of this. Quickly, though, we established that he was not worried about having trodden on some stray microwaves, but he had heard about a device being marketed to reduce the risks of cell phone use. First of all, we need to understand that there is very little scientific evidence to suggest that cell phones are dangerous, other than to those who use them while driving. But that has not stopped the inventive marketers. They’ve come up with a socklike device that one places over the phone to absorb the "harmful microwaves." The instructions that come along with this gem apparently instruct the user to launder the sock regularly to "wash out the radiation." Total nonsense. Microwaves are a form of energy, and they can indeed be absorbed by materials. After all, that’s how microwave ovens work. Moisture absorbs the waves, energizing the water molecules. They move around more rapidly, and it is this motion that we sense as heat. But microwaves cannot be stored in a substance for later release. It seems, though, that this contention is not restricted to scam artists who want to protect us from cell phones. A listener once called to ask how long one should allow microwaved food to stand after cooking to "allow the microwaves to escape." Obviously, this person had been reading her microwave cookbook, which would have advised her to allow microwaved food to stand briefly before serving it. This is common practice, necessary to complete the cooking process. Contrary to what many think, microwaves do not penetrate food deeply. The exterior of the food in question is easily heated, but the inside cooks through heat transfer by conduction. That’s why the food must stand for a few minutes. It has nothing to do with allowing vagrant microwaves to escape. Microwaves are not the only form of radiation causing undue concern. A terribly agitated caller was worried because after being x–rayed she was asked to take the films to her physician herself. She had heard all about exposure to x–rays being dangerous and thought that by carrying the films she was "exposing" herself. Since the infamous date of 9/11, a number of people have asked about wearing clothes that have gone through x–ray scanners at airports. They are concerned that these items may become radioactive and pose a risk to their health. Excessive exposure to x–rays can certainly be risky, but x–rayed items do not store and reemit radiation. Unfortunately, just a mention of the word radiation is often enough to alarm people. A gentleman wanted to know what the safest way was to dispose of a broken compact–disc player. I didn’t realize what he was getting at until he asked whether a laser was a form of radiation, which of course it is. Radiation is nothing more than the propagation of energy through space. Turn on a light and you are exposed to radiation. The caller knew that CD players use a laser, and since lasers produce radiation, there had to be some risk. The laser beam in a CD player is just a special type of light beam that poses no danger at all, and it is only emitted when the device is on. So old CD players can be safely discarded. But old laminated pictures may be a different story. I had to address this issue when a caller asked if it was safe to burn a laminated picture in her fireplace. It turned out that she had been recently divorced and wanted no reminders of her former spouse. Burning his picture seemed appropriate, but she had heard that laminated photos were mounted on particleboard glued together with urea–formaldehyde resin. She was worried that the heat would release formaldehyde, which she had heard was toxic. Indeed, formaldehyde is a problematic substance, but the amount released in this particular combustion process would be too little to cause concern. Still, I suggested that if she was still worried, she could hang on to the picture until the next hazardous waste collection took place in her municipality. She liked that idea ― she told me that "hazardous waste" was an excellent description of her former mate. Then there was the listener who wanted to know if lighting a match was a good way to get rid of the smell of natural gas in a house. That question prompted me to launch into a lecture on a common misunderstanding about gas. Natural gas, I said, is just methane, and methane has no smell. That’s why odiferous compounds are added to make sure that gas leaks are readily detected. I explained that soot from a burning match could absorb small amounts of smelly compounds, but, I added somewhat smugly, it was not a good idea to go around striking matches in a house that could be filled with methane. It was then that the caller sheepishly informed me he knew all that, but the "natural gas" he was talking about was more likely to be found in the bathroom than in the kitchen. It was I, not he, who had jumped to the wrong conclusion. Like I said, my Friday mornings are interesting.

Dr. Schwarcz writes books that are factual and interesting to read. He clearly describes scientific facts in a very readable way that lets the every-day reader learn about the so-called mysteries of science. This book follows in a similar fashion as he "separates sense from nonsense and fact from myth."

My son uses this book with his high school chemistry students to teach them the science behind every day occurrences. Radar, Hula Hoops and Playful Pigs by the same author has even more examples. Could be nice as well for budding scientists and home school parents.

My daughter has enjoyed this book.

Some very insightful information. I learned a lot and put the knowledge to use.

Maybe it's because I had just finished reading Bad Science by Ben Goldacre (highly recommended), but I just couldn't get into this one as much as I thought I would. It was entertaining and fun but the first half is littered with grand claims based on little bits of research... with no references in sight. If you want a book about the chemistry of food that actually tries to explain the chemistry, try What Einstein Told His Cook by Robert L. Wolke. It's down to earth and chock full of easy to understand explanations on the actual chemistry of food.

A friend of mine loaned me her copy of this book, and I was hooked...line and sinker! Dr. Joe has a wonderful writing "voice", and this gifted teacher makes it clear how chemistry is applicable--and understandable--in our everyday lives.

Director of the McGill University Office for Science and Society, phone in radio show host, and author, Professor Schwarcz examines scientific myths and wonders of everyday life. He elaborates on issues raised during his radio show with each section ranging from one to eight pages. A little over half of the book focuses on health issues such as scientific charlatans, various diets, artificial sweeteners, the mysteries of ice cream, various toxins and the need for vitamins. He follows this with a series of interesting scientific anecdotes on issues such as removing stains, matches, Teflon pots and pans, the electric light bulb, and soap. He follows a short section on the history of science with a discussion of scientific frauds and fakes. The book is interesting, fun and well written.

Primarily, it's a collection of Schwarcz's rather entertaining columns on chemistry. Focusing mostly on food chemistry, Schwarcz presents bite-sized chapters of the perfect size for commuters. He's a master at breaking down complicated chemistry into understandable pieces for those without a degree in chemical engineering. (Those with such a degree will likely find the book to be child's play...) Plus, he has an eye for history and the most important element in any good writing, human interest.
