Great little book for encouragement and how to details on keeping a nature sketch journal. The person to whom I gave the book loved it and has started a sketchbook using pen and ink as well as pencil drawings, then adding watercolor to the sketch. Basic elements covered.

I worked thru many of the pages of this book. I took it with me on a vacation to Paradise (Mt Rainier), and it inspired me to take a few afternoons of stopping to see my surroundings in a new way. The river of wildflowers coming down the hillside, the way the clouds sat over the mountain. Then, trying to capture the colors and the contrasts..... A great introduction to the northwest palette.

Most of the people in my studio group have bought this book, because it's really a good learning book.

Inspirational for anyone who sketches, or just loves the outdoors! I am hoping to take one of her Portland workshops! She is amazing I have heard!

This is a GREAT teaching book! The bonus is this is a book with wonderful photos. Particularly enjoyable if you live in OR or WA and really love the scenic Pacific NW.

It's a beautiful book and I didn't realize it is also a learning tool....so it is much more than a sketchbook....

It's not lost on you, reading Gierach, that he attained a degree in Philosophy many moons ago. Like all the Gierach I've read, (which would be all his output), Fisherman Are Liers never disappoints. Gierach has an eye not only for the fishing, but for the place, the world, and the broad spectrum of fishermen. He'll describe, in some technical detail, fly fishing, but also knows and notes the species of tree, bird and critter around him.The author is, by his own admission, fairly reclusive these days; nonetheless, were you so fortunate as to run into him on a river or lake, a float plane or an airport, I have no doubt you'd recognize the gleam in his eye, and be treated to a bit of the joy, reflection, and passion he infuses his work with every. If you've not read Gierach, you've got a treat ahead. Start with Trout Bum and work your way forward; you can thank me later.

After reading several of Gierach's books I thought I would give All Fishermen Are Liars a shot. I was not disappointed. Very colorful and articulate writing takes the reader on countless journeys fixing for several species of fish that keep your interest and inspire you to seek similar adventures. But it and enjoy!!!

I started reading his books when I first moved to Colorado in 1992. I've read them all pretty much in order and own them all (except his anthology of other works). All I can say is this is classic Gierach, "the Mark Twain of fly fishing", as someone wrote.In his early books he wrote about his clapped out pickup truck and working class house, and doing odd jobs to help pay the mortgage. and support his fly fishing habit. in the first chapter of this book he broke me up with this: "For instance the accountant who now handles your taxes says that if some of his other self -employed clients saw what you legitimately write off-fly rods, travel, fishing lodges, guide tips, etc.-they'd s*** a brick."Well, he may have moved up in life, but his feet are sill planted firmly on a stream bed.

Gierach is unquestionably one of the modern fly fishing era's more popular writers. He earned that title with a stream of books that divulged his candid opinion of many fishing related topics. This book does not exhibit his unvarnished look at issues but it seems a bit protective of his sources, venues; a step back from previous efforts. I like this author and this book but it seems to be the effort of a writer who is tired or has become protective of his privacy. Given Gierach's popularity I can understand his attitudinal change but his latest book is not the same. It is like reading his previous work through some sort of filter.

Another great collection of stories by Mr. Gierach. The first story in the book is obviously autobiographical, and I couldn't help but wonder as I read it if this may be John's final "book." I sure hope not. The book is story telling and word crafting at it's best. I can't find words to do it justice. For those who have not yet read any of John's books, and are not sure if the genre is right for them, don't hesitate, get this book. The stories are entertaining, and are about "things" most people can relate to. As an added bonus, there are tidbits of fishing wisdom and know-how that either reinforces what is already known to be true, or informs of things not yet fully learned.

Great quality book! one star off because I thought it was a little boring. I'm not an avid fly fisherman. Theres nothing better than fishing for me. But this is more about the experience of fly fishing than actually stories about catching fish. A kind of rambling on that an old fisherman would do. Not my style but I still enjoyed it! I'm more into deep sea angling and catching rod bending halibut. This author is all about the rod bending of a 3wt fly rod.

I have most of John's books and always enjoy escaping to the field in his stories. I land up reading them many times over the years, much the same as you might treat your favorite poems. If I had any bone-to-pick with him it would be that he has been known to repeat some of his stories in his different books. He has probably got two or three books with the some stories repeated from previous books. I think that if you buy a book of short stories from an author you deserve to get all new stories. I don't believe that this happened in "All Fishermen Are Liars", so thanks to John for that . As far as the stories go, they just start running together, in much the same way as would happen if you were sitting around a campfire listening to someone who traveled around the world and fished, tell one adventure after another until you get sleepy then you just excuse yourself and hit the sac. That is pretty much what they are the best for, so I read them when I go to bed. It does leave you feeling nice when you doze off.

This is the second book I have read by this author. I believe he is someone who could write a blog about his every day and it would be good reading. Unfortunately others who blog or tweet regularly don't have his skills. The book would be interesting to anyone with and interest in fly fishing, being outdoors, or being around interesting people.

I often heard of this book but never read it and after reading it I am sorry I didn't pick it up sooner. Some people think that the book is cruel and calculating, but I think it is very insightful of how governments take over countries and keep their citizens in line. Some times it means killing the old administration (literally) and other times it means employing citizens in new territories that you are trying to take over. The writing wasn't convoluted at all. It was very clear and well written. This is definitely a book you can read over and over again.

A great thesis worth multiple readings. This collection of essays and letters are one man's fascinating take on politics and war. The only thing which takes away from the overall work are the appendices which try to spoon-feed conclusions as opposed to providing context for the greater work.To be able to read and understand this book correctly, you must be prepared to spend some time understanding the politics and conflicts of the time. That being said, it's the only way to do it and be able to grasp more than surface conclusions. Being able to read and understand the work changed my understanding of not just politics, but also my interactions with different groups both socially and in my work life.

The idea of "reviewing" this is more than a little silly -- it's arguably the most influential non-religious work of all time -- but I thought a few comments & historical notes might still be worthwhile."The Prince" was essentially the first work of political realism in Western thought -- the first work of Western political philosophy that concerned itself not with the ideal government (as Plato had done in his _Republic_) but with the practical realities of getting and holding power. To describe the impact and influence of that willingness, that first notion that conventional morality might not be the best guide to success, would be as impossible a task as trying to summarize the influence of Galileo. Napoleon is rumored to have written extensive annotations to this book; Stalin allegedly kept a copy on his nightstand. Half of Shakespeare's villains (Iago, Richard III, etc.) derive their character in whole or part from this text.Most of this book is extraordinarily controversial, even today, yet still fundamentally difficult to argue against; there's a reason the Catholic Church kept it on the _Index Librorum Prohibitorum_ for centuries. I did not have the required level of vocabulary that was needed at that time to really understand what was happening in the book. However, after reading it when I myself was in high school, I found a broader understanding. It almost seems like the book could be satire, but who knows. It's a book of how to rule in a nutshell, but we aren't talking about democratic or republic rulers. We're talking about people who have absolute control over their subjects and kingdom. His book effectively demonstrates the different ways you can arise to these powers, how to control groups and obtain new principalities within the kingdom.

This book is an excellent introduction to the storied history of the Cincinnati Reds. Each chapter focuses on a single event or individual, and the authors did an excellent job of blending secondary sources, contemporary newspaper accounts, and video when available into the chapters. It is an easy read, and as someone who has occasionally contributed to books about Reds history, I learned something new in nearly every chapter. The Big Red Machine era is obviously well covered, and the authors did a good job of including the highlights from the periods before and after the Big Red Machine. A good read for any Reds fan or someone interested in baseball history.

This review is being written by Linda's husband, Bill, who she bought the book for.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a quick, but interesting read that could be swallowed in small bites. Being a long time Reds fan, many of the stories were familiar to me, but all contained some bits of information that I was unaware of. I really enjoyed the sections on the Big Red Machine era (thought the section on Joe Morgan was especially good, as was the one on Bob Howsam), but also enjoyed the sections on things I was less aware of (the one on the Schwabs/Stowes, the Ewell Blackwell section, and the '61 Reds).It also brought back memories, like the section on when Pete came back to manage the Reds, as I was in attendance that night and the excitement of Johnny Bench night (as I was watching on tv).All in all, a really good read and well worth the money. I highly recommend it.

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my elderly Dad who is a life long Reds fan. I'm a little disappointed in the number of pictures in the book. There are some but most of the chapters are text only.

Abigail M. Judge, PhD, is a clinical and child and family forensic psychologist. Dr. Judge maintains a private practice in Cambridge, MA, is a Forensic Consultant at the Law and Psychiatry Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, and holds an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Judge provides psychotherapy, consultation, forensic evaluation, expert witness testimony, and reunification intervention. Robin M. Deutsch, Ph.D., ABPP, is a child and family forensic psychologist, board certified in couples and family practice. She is Director of the Center of Excellence for Children, Families and the Law at William James College in Newton, MA, where she developed the Certificate in Child and Family Forensic Issues and the Child and Family Evaluation Service. She is a founding Board member of Overcoming Barriers, was formerly an Associate Clinical Professor at Harvard Medical School, and was Director of Training and Forensic Services at the Children and the Law program at Massachusetts General Hospital for over 20 years. Good review of parental alienation issues, but not user friendly for average therapist. Advocates a particular program that is not readily accessed by most families. Nevertheless, it is a valuable resource for those interested in parental alienation and high conflict divorce.

The one redeeming quality of this book is that it mentions Craig Childress, which I am sure the authors regret in retrospect. Other than that, this book is garbage. Its authors present an apologist declaration in support of alienating parents, in the guise of supporting alienated children. Do yourself a favor. Avoid this book and read the books of Craig Childress instead.

Rather "dry" as this was written for clinicians (much like a textbook). However, as a lay-person needing to understand, it was quite useful.

Excellent program that every family court should have as a tool within their jurisdiction.

Awesome text!

I am a therapist working with children and families in high conflict divorce situations and working to reunify parents and children in these families. I found this book an invaluable resource. Not only does it give critical concrete interventions, it also includes tools for psycho-education (which may not always be intuitive) and points out the ways traditional family therapy may not succeed in mending parent/child relationships. It also highlights how the parent that children continue to see may unintentionally or intentionally contribute to the problem and offers ideas to assist in changing that behavior. A great resource for therapist and attorneys who deal with families in these situations.

I have attended an Overcoming BArriers Program and was not impressed. They did nothing for me and my estranged family other than reinforce their negative views and their expertise was not regarded as helpful in my case. I found the camp ultimately not helpful in the least. I have been asked to write reviews but feel as if they cull out all negative or not positive critiques and wish to only present hopeful scenarios. My concerns about the camp and its direction went unadressed. Little to no outreach post camp experience other than to write a review.

I was disappointed by Neuromancer. I generally find authors that I like then devour their entire body of work. I won't be ordering other Gibson books. Several reviewers have said that they would have rated the book lower, except that it was influential in creating a new kind of sci-fi genre and one mentioned the effort that had gone into the writing of this book.That would be nice if this were a piece of art hanging on the wall I suppose, but for me it is a book that I want to read and be engaged by while I read it. I am the same way with my art though, Picasso may be a genius, but cubism looks stupid to me and I don't enjoy it. Same with this book, it may have started a new genre of writing, but I just didn't enjoy it.Why? First of all, contrary to some of the posts here, it DID feel dated to me. Not so terribly that it ruined the work, but it added to my dislike. Mostly, I never felt the scenes were described well enough for me to picture them in my head. I trudged onward through the book to see what was going to happen next, but often I wasn't completely sure what had just happened. One reason for this was that the book was full of terminology and slang that was not well-defined or clearly explained. So I wondered what a Panther Modern was and what a coffin was used for and if it was for storage, why wasn't it safe? I felt like I had been dropped into a sequel and should have known a lot of things that I did not know and could not easily find out.I finally gave up. It was a lot of work to read this book. I spent too much time trying to figure out what some slang term meant, instead of enjoying descriptive writing that painted a picture.I do not recommend this book.

I read an article that said you cannot call yourself a science fiction fan if you haven't read Neuromancer. At thirty years old, i considered myself a connoisseur of sci-fi books, movies, and television, but had never read Neuromancer. Having read it now, I'm not so sure i agree with the article I read, but i can unequivocally say that if you consider yourself a sci-fi fan, you will thoroughly enjoy reading this book - it is now probably in my top ten. Particularly if you enjoy noir-ish, gritty sci-fi like Neal Stephenson, Philip K. Dick, Richard K. Morgan, you need to read this. The story and writing are fantastic - i think the biggest reason i hadn't already read the book was because it can often be painful to read future-based computer/tech-heavy sci-fi that was written three decades or more ago. The story devices can seem (as one would imagine) dated to the extent that our own technological evolution does not gel with the predictions made by the writers. This book is a notable exception. For a book that deals heavily with tech, computer programs, AI, and "cyberspace," it is insane to think this was written in 1984. You will not be disappointed - i would expect that this will become one your favorite sci-fi books, and if not, will least enjoyable serve as another feather in your cap towards readings the genre's so-called "classics."

I didn't quite "get" this book the first time through, but upon rereading it, I've come to love it. Really, the biggest barrier when it comes to enjoying this book is the fact that Gibson throws the reader into the world of Neuromancer without explaining much immediately. I think that during my first reading I was confused, but my second time through, I already had something of an understanding of the book, allowing me to enjoy it more fully without being baffled. This book is brilliant. The strongest thing about it is probably the atmosphere. It is consistent throughout and just feels unique. The computer focused future of the Neuromancer feels fleshed out and alive. One thing I really loved about this was its connection between artificial intelligence and demons. It really makes you think about how what would once be considered magic is now commonplace. The protagonists are very well developed while the other characters don't get a ton of screen time. I thought this was a bad move on Gibson's part at first, but I see this move as being great for keeping the focus on computers and tech, rather than humans. While I'm not sure how I feel about having to read a book twice to enjoy it, I have to admit that I loved this book the second time through.

I’m fairly well read, love sci-fi, and picked up Neuromancer because I was told it’s a pretty landmark piece of work for the sci-fi and cyberpunk genres.I am so relieved it’s finally over.One of the most painfully boring and confusing books I’ve ever read. The author offers virtually no world building or explanation; rather he throws all these foreign and made up terms at you without defining them and just expects you to catch on. Same with characters. I didn’t care about a single one of them, and honestly I only kept up with the plot by periodically referencing Wikipedia. Even having understood the plot from Wikipedia, it’s really not that intriguing.I have no idea what fans see in this, and I’d recommend something like Snow Crash instead.
