The Practice of Prayer (The New Church's Teaching Series, Vol 4), by Margaret Guenther

Review

Margaret Guenther is a lot of things―a professor of theology, an author, a retreat leader and an Episcopal priest. But in her latest book, The Practice of Prayer, it is evident that first and foremost she is just like the rest of us, human―allible, vulnerable and all the other things that go along with the human condition. The Practice of Prayer is refreshingly down-to-earth. In this book Guenther talks about prayer and paths to hearing God in a way that makes readers feel they are sitting by a fire having one of those deep and meaningful talks with their best friend. It's the kind of talk you later recall as having been one where a lot of the world's perplexing problems were solved. (Cynthia Jardon Alexandria Daily Town Talk)Margaret Guenther has provided the church with a wise and gentle book in The Practice of Prayer, and the chapter subtitles indicate the warmth and sparkle of her text…. I could wish for no more comprehensive, accessible, and gracious text for leading adults to an understanding of the realities of prayer, though I do wish she had made some mention of the renewal of interest in the labyrinth as a tool for meditation and prayer. These volumes occasion in me hopefulness for the church. The author takes seriously the lives of her potential readers, credits them with insight and ability, and invites them into mature knowledge and understanding. I hope the book finds pastors and teachers who share the author's faith in the wisdom of our times and our people. (Scott Lee, St. Mark's Church)Do not be misled by the title. This is not a how-to manual for prayer. It is much more valuable than that. … Instead of promoting six easy steps to more exciting prayer, Guenther offers a simple, powerful reminder: prayer is work and work is prayer. (Robert P. Mills The Presbyterian Layman)This is a practical and readable book on the essentials of prayer, presented by Episcopal priest Margaret Guenther. Her opening pages are inviting. She tells us that even she is humbled at the thought of ‘teaching' someone how to pray. Margaret Guenther's presentation is less formal theology and more gleanings from wisdom, her own and that passed down the ages. Not that her work is ‘non-theological.' In fact, it is, and deeply so. But her book is God-talk that is conscious of the fact that the Word became flesh, like us. And so we live in the flesh, always seeking the Spirit. Margaret Guenther's practicality includes a number of recommended texts, both classic and recent, to assist the practitioner in the practice of prayer. Her book is a place to begin, or to begin again. (Phyllis Zagano Anglican Theological Review)If you have been searching for a book that can serve as a guide for yourself or for others, search no longer. Margaret Guenther has written an insightful, accessible, earthy book on prayer and the spiritual life. She has the extraordinary ability to engage her readers at diverse levels and to impart wisdom that is at once simple and profound. . . . This book can be used in a variety of ways, to inform the individual reader, to inspire a book study, or to guide a group in the exploration of prayer. Guenther provides a section of questions to use for group conversation or as exercises to practice for the individual or a group. Several books are published on the life of prayer, but this book is outstanding among them. Even a person most experienced in prayer will find Guenther's insights, on even the most familiar topics, refreshing and new. The Practice of Prayer is a must for every person's library. (Margaret McNaughton-Ayers, Assistant Dean for Admissions and Community Life Virginia Theological Seminary)

Probably the best book on prayer I have read and I have a lot in my library - Dutch Sheets, Ignatius Brianchaninov, E. M. Bounds, Philokalia, Derek Prince, and various other authors on prayer along with internet online information. This book is definitely for today's Christian. While this book can be read in one or two settings I chose rather to read at local restaurant's over breakfast absorbing a few pages during each breakfast; so it took me more than a month to finish which allowed her written material to sink into my soul with thoughts prompted by the Holy Spirit for integration and emphasis. A wonderful addition to my library.

Margaret Guenther's *The Practice of Prayer* introduces the larger concept and practices of prayer with five pages devoted to discussion questions and exercises. For the most part, she covers various historical practices in one chapter. She directs her book toward Anglicans and reviews other spiritual disciplines. If you're interested in similar books that approach the topic from the practical side of prayer, you might try:Ten Ways to Pray: A Short Guide to a Long History of Talking with God gives short histories and practical suggestions for implementing historical prayer methods for yourself and your group. For God Alone: A Primer on Prayer offers history, theology, and anthropology, as well as practical steps to prayer and, as a bonus, some great poetry.Creating a Life with God: The Call of Ancient Prayer Practices is written to a broad audience and supplies instructions on how to walk the journey of prayer.

A very well-written and readable overview of prayer traditions. Guenther takes great care to discuss topics while not overloading on theological points (always a positive for me). Time is also spent reviewing how one might better incorporate prayer into daily life. A very enriching read!

A good, homespun book on the practice of prayer. Margaret Guenther reminds us that prayer comes in many forms and can be practiced in many ways. From a complex rosary, novena or praying the hours in monastic style to centering prayer, to just an utterance of the Jesus prayer, or maybe a forelorn cry of "help", any time we communicate with God, it is a prayer. The book also discusses retreats, confession, intercessory prayer, group and communal prayer and worship, as well as other uniquely Christian elements of prayer and the mystical experience. She removes the fear of not praying "right", and instead gives practical ways to infuse prayer into a busy life. A good book, a good read, and one that will resonate with most busy people.

I am a teacher of prayer methods and found this the best and easiest book on prayer I have read!

Read this in preparation for an 8-week series on prayer at my church. A very good resource, and well-written. A couple of chapters were a little dry, but the majority provide good reading and excellent material to promote group discussion. In combination with this book, we are also reading from Richard Foster's "Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home" which is an excellent book for personal use.

One of the few books I've seen on Amazon with a full 5 star review and I totally concur. I received so much inspiration and insight in Ms. Guenther's previous books that I wanted to read The Practice of Prayer. I am so very grateful that I did. I immediately wanted to share the book with others. Her simple, clear and concise explantion of types of prayer, ways to think about prayer, times to pray, and examples of great leaders in prayer give such an inspiring tentimony to follow. I offered this book to our spirituality group and have received countless thank yous and praise for offering it. I highly recommend The Practice of Prayer for individual and group study.

Learning and growing in the Spirit is not easy for most who yearn for spiritual growth. The practice of prayer makes the learning accessible
