This is the third book in the ‘Bloodlands Collection’ by this author that I have read. The other two are “The Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie†and “The pirate.†This story strikes a chord with me, as I seem to remember bits and pieces of this story when I was a youngster.As far as the quality, and the flow, in the writing, I found this to be smoother than “The Little Slaughterhouse,†but got confused in a couple of places and had to go back and re-check what I thought I knew.BLUSH FACTOR No worries here. You can feel free to read this aloud to your prayer group or any kin you desire. Of course, since it does deal with murder, you might still exercise some caution, but not for language, sex, or graphic violence, etc.Rather than post an excerpt here, if a sample of this author’s writing is preferred, please click on the links below to two other books in this series. I choose a five-star rating because the author is well versed and has a wealth of knowledge about crime regardless of the need!!!!!! I would recommend this book to anyone especially the younger ones because they can learn alot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another great, quick read by Schecter. But just because it’s short does not mean it’s not disturbing. A bizarre story.
Book was an interesting look into the lives of the offenders and their victims. Will recommend this book to my dad and mother.
I give a 5 star for a thouroughly enjoyable true crime..comparable to crimes in southern Indiana...i recommend for a short true crime read.
I love true crime and this is a great short story to read before bed or on a lunch break.
I love it when Amazon groups these books all together, would enjoy seeing why and how they decide to do this?? all these are by: Harold Schechter? that is a 1st, right?? don't they usually have book by different authors? i made a list of my most favorite and in which order!! (I apparently did not read them in order, just jumped around and listen/read what i wanted to, that is how i roll!!!) 1. Rampage, 2. Brick Slayer, 3. Panic, 4. Pied Piper, 5. Little Slaughterhouse, & 6. Pirate (auto and books Kindle Unlimited, Bloodlines) I definitely think you have to have both the listen and read ...'cause there are so many awesome must see stuff. I love the narrator. "Steve Weber". then when you read the books .. u get like these amazing visuals. so cool! i will say these are not always pleasant stories ...they are pretty harsh ...but I would imagine that was well known before you starting reading?? right??! i mean these are not romances ... but i wonder ... i guess i could read some of the reviews (have yet to do that. some reviewers get kind of weird about certain things??!) I really enjoyed it ...and glad i found these. i know i wanna see more from Harold soon enough!! way cool! I do wonder ... can you really lump killers or folks who commit similar crimes into one box??! i recall when i was in college my teacher said we all have similar thoughts or feelings ...but the ones who go about carrying out the evilness ...that is what makes us different. it makes you wonder what sends them over the edge or make them so mean?? hateful?? have they been hurt in their past? treat wrong when raised ...what is it?? can you just narrow it all down to 1,2, and 3 ..and these reasons make you so to carry out evil ways??! i wonder??!
As a writer of crime fiction, I'm always looking for good stories to peak my creative juices. When I saw the new Amazon Original series by Harold Schechter, I downloaded them all. The Pied Piper was a quick and easy read, like reading an extended news article in the New York Times or Vanity Fair. Well written, with rich details, and exquisitely produced by Amazon, this tale is worth your time. I especially appreciated the connection made in the reporting to a story developed by a famous American short story writer that was inspired by this true crime story. My only criticism of the work is Schechter's tendency to utilize tired stereotypes or tropes in his descriptions of his subjects - utilized to create word stingy character sketches. I understand this choice was made in service of word counts and brevity, but a piece as rich as this one deserved a bit more originality in character development. Otherwise, an excellent piece!
