A girl named Jane grows up in a stuffy Victorian mansion, raised by her loving but flighty mother and her cold, controlling grandmother. For ten years she thinks that her father is dead, only to discover that he is alive and living on Prince Edward Island. One day he writes and asks her to come spend the summer with him. Jane, who is shy and awkward and frightened, doesn't want to go. But when she does, she discovers a father who loves her, an island which becomes her true home, and learns that she is actually strong, capable, lovely, and smart. She learns that she doesn't have to live beneath her grandmother's thumb, and slowly she starts to piece together what happened to her beautiful but unhappy mother and her clever, caring father. One of my favorites that I reread every few years, by the famed author of "Anne Of Green Gables".

This is my secound time reading this unique well written book. Jane grows up in upper class family with her and her mother both dominated by Janes controlling class obsessed Grandmother .The grandmothers veiled and constant jabs at Jane are seen through the eyes of a child. Jane finds out at 12 that her father is alive (not dead as she had been told) and is summoned by him to spend the summer with him at Prince Edward Island. Jane arrives all coiled up and resentful sure that a man that could leave her beautiful mother would have to be some type of evil nuisance. How wrong she was. From very first sight her and 'Dad' are kindred spirits and Jane unfurls for the first time in her life and upon returning to her cold rich home she meets the eyes of her cruel controlling Grandmother for the first time. Jane will never be the same now she's found 'Dad.Although aimed at a jounior audience i, being 45, would class this as one of my favourite books. Bravo LM Montgomery

I never thought I'd finally have a copy of this book unabridged in audio. I've been so grateful listening to it. There were some flaws in the editing as a few sentence fragments would repeat, but I'm so grateful that I'm not going to diminish any stars. (And rating systems are pretty silly anyway.)The reader does a great job of characterizing voices for Andrew, Jane, Grandma, Mother, Aunt Irene (((shivers))), the various neighbours, etc. It was so wonderful to go through all of this again and I wish there was a sequel. (I know the author was working on one before she passed away, but alas!)Thank you, Dreamscape, for this wonderful production. Already ordering more Montgomery audio books I have been waiting decades to hear!

I was curious about this book written by the woman who gave us Anne of Green Gables. My mother was actually named after Diana of the Green Gables series. This story was every bit as captivating and fun as Anne of Green Gables. Jane, is a delightful girl who struggles through life in an unhappy home, with a mean and vengeful grandmother, and a listless and meek mother. Jane's parents are separated, with Jane growing up not knowing her father and hearing hateful things about him all her life. One day, however, Jane's father sends for Jane. She spends the summer with him on Prince Edward Island and life is forever changed for Jane. The transformation of Jane is both uplifting and fun. The ending is so completely "feel good", you will be satisfied and happy.

"Jane of Lantern Hill", first published in 1937, was one of L.M. Montgomery's last completed novels. The story takes place in Toronto and on Prince Edward Island, two venues very familiar to Montgomery. As the story opens, Jane Stuart is an awkward ten year old living with her mother Robin and Grandmother Kennedy in a old mansion in Toronto. Grandmother Kennedy runs a strict household, keeping Jane and her mother tightly under her thumb. Jane's only friend is the poor orphan Jodi, living next door as a charity case in a boarding house. Jane has a rich imagination and budding domestic skills, both stunted by her Grandmother's repressive ways.Jane's life changes when her father, previously unknown to her, writes to demand that she spend the summer with him on Prince Edward Island. Jane will discover, to her joy, that her father is a kindred spirit, who is prepared to let her take on the running of their new household at Lantern Hill. In a magical summer, Jane blossoms, learning through trial and error, making friends and becoming a capable, confident young person.A different Jane returns to Toronto, prepared to face down her grandmother and to make a place for herself at school. Jane will defy all her controlling relatives to take on one last challenge, hoping to bring her mother and father back together again.Jane Stuart is a modest type of heroine. She is too young for romance; her challenges are the more age-appropriate ones of mastering domestic skills and herself. "Jane of Lantern Hill" is an engaging, feel-good story, highly recommended to fans of "Anne of Green Gables". It is a real shame that L.M. Montgomery never managed to write the sequel she apparently contemplated for "Jane of Lantern Hill."
