This guide covers the Tri-State area (NY, NJ, CT), and does it remarkably well. It provides not only a wide variety of locations in the three states, but great detail on each location. It includes state and national forests, shoreline hikes, more challenging hilly/mountainous terrain, and everything in between. This is an excellent, comprehensive guide to some fantastic hiking in this area.

We used this one. Several points which made it helpful: we were all in New York City, so we had to find a hike not too distant. The descripton of the trail, its difficulties and the length of the hike proofed to be in line with our experuience - and this as well helped to find the right hike. Overall a good book with nice hikes and the right amount of information which one as a layman hiker needs to find his hike and to then hike well.Albert

This book is not an answer to someone who has doubts, unless you have them read 20+ pages for any given passage, the explanations are far too long.More importantly, most of them do not use scriptural references to defend certain points. A large majority of the authors answers boiled down to "it's much better than the nations surrounding Israel!"The absolute worst aspect of this book was done of the worst "logic" I've read on the subject. In regarding Sodom and Gomorrah, the author asked "Considering they were homosexuals, you have to wonder just how many children were actually in the city?" And another "Considering they sacraficed children to false gods, you have to wonder just how many children were actually in the city?"Both arguments are very poorly thought out and in bad taste. They are very unlikely to convince anyone and far more likely to disgust someone against a Christian.For the first, it's very likely that they were sexually depraved toward all genders, afterall Lot did offer them his daughters, not his sons or son-in-laws. He would not have done this if the city was only known for its homosexuality.For the second, in order to offer child sacrafices, you need to have children... Most likely the rituals were something like offering firstborns, a way to increase fertility. Not every child born.It's arguments like these that make this a very poor choice of you want to help someone see through challenging topics in the old testament.I give this 2 stars because toward the end of the book, the author does have a couple meaningful insights into Israelite slavery issues. But I don't know if it's worth purchasing to get to them.Instead, I highly recommend "The Bible Project" on YouTube or their website. They do a fantastic job of bringing new insight to various themes, topics, and books. Including issues with some of the old testament passages. I can't recommend their work enough.

This is a really good book. Copan does a great job handling the assaults of the New Atheists and working through difficult texts of the Old Testament (including the so-called terror texts). Copan deals with slavery, the Bible's treatment of women, holy war, and several other topics that often give Christians (and atheists!) problems. While I gave the book 5 stars for its basic excellence, there are a number of minor points I would raise questions about had I the time or were I myself a better scholar. I'll just mention two.Copan frequently resorts to the language of exaggeration in his dealing with OT texts. Scripture certainly does use hyperbole in places, but I'm not convinced that it does so as often as Copan suggests. Sometimes this appears to be an argument of convenience.Copan also goes in several directions regarding the Conquest that I felt were sort of weak, such as giving credence to the Infiltration theory of the Conquest. The account in the Bible of the crossing of the Red Sea and of the Jordan, in my view, pretty much vitiates the Infiltration theory. Both speak of sudden mass movements, and Joshua speaks of a sudden overthrow of the Canaanite dominance of the Promised Land. The fact that Canaanites continued to live in Canaan after the Conquest does not change the basic facts. Copan's resort to studying some of the various Hebrew words surrounding Israelite warfare merely opened the possibility for his interpretations (words do, after all, possess a semantic range), but certainly did not demand (or even suggest) his interpretations. Copan seems to acknowledge this in places with several "even if" statements.Anyway, the book is excellent. All the chapters are good; the final chapter is outstanding. Well documented, well argued, this is certainly a book that should find a place on your apologetics shelf.

This is not an argument. It's a very long, very painful and tortured rationalization. God didn't commit genocide because the Bible says God is good and if he DID commit genocide, then the people he did it to deserved it (because reasons) and at that point is it really the bad-thing version of genocide?This is the kind of thinking that makes Christians morally unreliable and sears their consciences until they're willing to vote in an authoritarian fascist if God says it's okay. It is the exact opposite of morality; it's arguing why you don't need to use your own moral compass if God tells you not to, even to the point of murder. A disgusting display of special pleading whose horrible moral impact the author can't possibly have thought through to its logical conclusion. In defending the Bible agains charges of evil, he has made evil a nonexistent consideration, compared to obeying what the literalists claim the Bible teaches. This way lies more genocide.

This book address the new atheists' arguments head on, and it's dead on. Copan's writing is clear, lucid, and readable. He has divided up chapters into a handful of pages (thought the font is rather small), so each "question" or "argument" is addressed quickly yet sufficiently.The title of the book, "Is God a Moral Monster?" obviously is a rhetorical question. No, He isn't. But, why do new atheists frame God as such a being? In a nutshell, because they use out-of-context phrases, expressions, and impressions from the Bible. With Copan's further explanation on cultural backgrounds, context of events, and linguistic nuances, readers are able to grasp the deeper and more caring heart of God the Father.I have not finished reading the book, bur the first 9 chapters or so have been satisfying. A good book for those who know the short answer to the question, but who need more detail and, thus, confidence/evidence.

Starting from how engineers are interviewed, actual hands-on work (due to processes that overemphasizes "do" over "think, e.g., daily stand-ups require you to say what concrete thing you did yesterday), evaluation of work ("move fast and break things") to over-emphasizing on downstream "fixes" (prod-ops culture, 24*7 firefighting heroism) - the top echelon of technology gravitated towards things that it can see, feel, measure. What often gets neglected in this "code be all" culture is deep understanding of fundamental concepts, and how most newer "innovations" are indeed built on a handful time-honored principles.Nowhere else perhaps is this more prominent than in data space that up-levels libraries and frameworks as the conversation starter. That gets in the way of success. It is indeed impossible to model Cassandra "tables" without understanding - at least - quorum, compaction, log-merge data structure. Due to the way the present day solutions are built ("fits one use case perfectly well"), if these solutions are not implemented well to the particular domain, failure is just a release away.Mr Kleppmann does a great job of articulating the "systems" aspects of data engineering. He starts from a functional 4 lines code to build a database to the way how one can interpret and implement concurrency, serializability, isolation and linearizability (the latter for distributed systems). His book also has over 800 pointers to state of the art research as well as some of the computer science's classic papers. The book slows down its pace on the chapter on Distributed System and on the final one. A good editor could have trimmed about 120 pages and still retain most value one could get from the book.That said, if you ever worked on data systems, especially across paradigms (IMS -> RDBMS -> NoSQL -> Map-Reduce -> Spark -> Streaming -> Polyglot), this book is pretty much only resource out there to tie the "loose ends" and paint a coherent narrative. I'm only 3 chapters into this book and I think it deserves a 5 star already.If you are interested in distributed systems or scalability, this book is a must-read for you. It gives you a high level understanding of different technology, including the idea behind it, the pros and cons, and the problem it is trying to solve. A great book for practitioners who want to learn all the essential concepts quickly.I didn't come from a traditional CS background, but I did have some basic knowledge in hardware and data structure. You will need some of that, such as hard disk vs SSD and AVL tree, to understand the materials. If you are completely new to backend or DS, you may want to start with another book "Web Scalability for Startup Engineers." After that book, you can read the free article "Distributed Systems for Fun and Profit" and you are good to go for this amazing book :D

The focus is primarily on the core principles and thought-processes that one must apply when it comes to building data services. Design concepts don't go out-of-date soon, so the book has very long shelf-life.The high-point of this book is the author's lucid prose, which indicates mastery of the subject matter and clarity of thought. Conceptualizing reality is an art and the author really shines here. You’ll find that whenever you have a question after reading a particular sentence, the answer to that will be found in the upcoming sentences. It’s like mind-reading.Also kudos to the author for those nice diagrams and interesting maps (and for avoiding mathematical formulas with Greek symbols). This was the first novel written by Starhawk; however, I strongly encourage you to FIRST real her prequel to this: Walking to Mercury. That book sets up the characters and story line for this. However, The Fifth Sacred Thing stands on its own if you have not or choose not to read the other. This book is amazing in that it was written over 20 years ago in 1993. At that time, it was viewed almost as a work of science fiction because of the outlandish premise that corporations would rule the world, genetic testing would evolve into human breeding, and water would become so scarce that wars would be fought over it. However, today, this novel is right at the point of totally becoming true.I warn sensitive readers that in the second half of the book, the graphic details of how humans are treated at the hands of the corporate 1%ers is so awful that you will have trouble sleeping, not because it is so awful, but because it is so current and not just possible be already being done in our world right now. It would only take a little push by the super wealthy for our world to totally devolve into the story Starhawk presents here in The Fifth Sacred Thing.You will have to read to see how it all ends, and how our current world may soon be. Then, dive right into her third novel - just published - The City of Refuge - where the same characters and story line continues.But I can say, that even though I have finished reading The Fifth Sacred Thing, I still get nightmares, especially after hearing a news item....

I am an old Hippie of sorts and also have Native American roots that make me lean toward a Nature Loving Path of Spirituality, So this book fits into much of what I understand of the real world. But the criticism I have on this book is it tries way too hard to incorporate all of the NEW AGE ever imagined, into one story - and a post-apocalypse adventure story at that,A really fun book to read, hummm,,, for some people. BUT be aware it has a naivety that will make many readers put it down, to never return,My recommendation? Put on your tie-dyed garb, drink a bit of sweet wine, perhaps indulge in some other mild recreational adult pleasure, and go back to 1960's thinking. It's us against the establishment again. Contradiction? All this is set in the future, after unknowns have dropped the bomb in California. I also read it as an exercise to show the classic culture clash that exists today, between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

A local friend suggested I read "The Fifth Sacred Thing," so that some of us could form a book discussion group about the ideas and vision of this novel. Although it took me awhile to get into the characters, I quickly saw why my friend has read this book three times and counting. It's filled with permaculture principles, magick, natural healing, and the tension between totalitarian dystopia and a power-from-within ecotopia based upon respect, not control.I found Starhawk's text incredibly prophetic, even when I thought it was written in 2005. My admiration tripled when I noticed a publication date of 1993! In 2013, as we face nuclear and toxic poisoning of the Pacific Ocean, a no longer hidden Police State, genetic manipulation, a transhumanist agenda, biological warfare, and increasingly intense weather events -both natural and human-aggravated -- the setting of this novel in 2048 feels rather optimistic.Once I managed to get a handle on the characters, I found the book difficult to put down. As the narrative continued, I realized that the initial ambiguities and confusion about gender, age and physical markers, actually contribute to and underscore the tale. As readers, we quickly find ourselves overwhelmed in and by a post-collapse world, unsure exactly which collapse triggered which events, but gradually recognizing the effects of long-term trauma and difficult life. Things the 20th and early 21st centuries took for granted have not been available for at least a generation, and the ripple effects of such deprivations reach much further than minor or anticipated inconvenience.At the same time, we find that some things in this future society function much more harmoniously than in our current one. In the absence of cars, trucks and planes, this culture has compensated for its isolation by cultivating the individual gifts of each member of the community -- art, music, healing, science, cooking, dreaming and psychic defense. Everyone gardens and participates in seasonal rituals, and the society bases itself around the premise that the Four Sacred Things (fire, water, air, earth) are so sacred that they cannot be privately owned. "May you never hunger; may you never thirst" is a phrase used in real-life pagan gatherings, but in "The Fifth Sacred Thing," this concept forms the basis of an entire political system! No one goes hungry, and no one goes without water.As the plot rolls on, we see just how innovative and special this city's solutions are. Contrast via epic journeys to the Southlands shows us that -- despite the obvious challenges up North in 2048 -- things could be (and are) much worse elsewhere. The characters face horrific trials that force them to question not only their own morals and philosophies, but also the very essence of what it means to be human. Readers with rigid ideas about sexuality, self-defense, magick, religion, medicine, technology, and the occult will likely find themselves extremely challenged as they journey with the characters. Author Starhawk practices the Reclaiming Tradition, which combines one's spirituality with non-violent political activism. Throughout her novel, we witness the effectiveness of non-violent resistance, as well as its limitations. The characters' reactions and struggles force us to evaluate our own fixed ideals, hypocrisy, privilege and irresponsibility. We see on every level how each small action affects the whole of Creation, often in dramatic and unforeseen ways.I particularly enjoyed all the manifested visualizations, herbal and energetic healing, as well as the key roles played by bees and crystals. Since I have personally made a decision to use magickal self-defense rather than violence should the SHTF, I enjoyed reading about various techniques -- many of which I recognized as real, not fiction. In the acknowledgments, Starhawk confirms how thoroughly she researched this book, including Native teachings, along with actual songs, chants, techniques and rituals.If you've ever wondered, "What would I do if society collapsed on multiple levels at once? Does it need to be `every man for himself,' or can (must) we find ways to work together in community? Would we really be stronger together than apart? What does magick have to do with a fully functioning human, and how do I access multi-generational healing?" then "The Fifth Sacred Thing" deserves a place on your bookshelf. You will want to read it again and again, tracking your own growth as you face its challenges. If, on the other hand, you prefer to rest in the hazy halls of denial and wish to cling to the patriarchal status quo, then drop this book like a hot potato! You cannot engage "The Fifth Sacred Thing" and remain unchanged.

Have read this many times as well as the prequel WALKING TO MERCURY and the sequel CITY OF REFUGE. These are among the most important books ever written and especially timely for this day and age. Starhawk is a modern day prophet and her ideas for how we can live in harmony with the planet and each other are the best out there. Please read and recommend to all your friends who care about our future.

This is one of my favorite stories of hope and redemption in a not too distant, and not too unbelievable post apocalyptic future. It's classic good against evil; good being a group people who've banded together in love and equity, and using various wiccan and pagan powers, have carved out a life that is gentle on the earth. Bad is a group of power hungary with guns and monopoly on drugs, especially drugs everyone has to take to stay alive. It's a long novel, that works for me, but maybe not everyone. Starhawk is an important neopagan and ecofeminist leader, so it's always good to read what she writes.

This is a book I’ve read many times, and always return to when I need to be regrounded. Just as in the book the people of the Southlands need to hear Madrone’s stories of the North so they can begin to believe that change is possible and that there are other more just and inclusive ways to build a society, so too do we need to be reminded that our current path toward ruining the environment and continuing to enrich the 1% is not the only possibility. Starhawk’s books help us to envision the change so we can be the change.

This is the third book in the ‘Bloodlands Collection’ by this author that I have read. The other two are “The Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie” and “The pirate.” This story strikes a chord with me, as I seem to remember bits and pieces of this story when I was a youngster.As far as the quality, and the flow, in the writing, I found this to be smoother than “The Little Slaughterhouse,” but got confused in a couple of places and had to go back and re-check what I thought I knew.BLUSH FACTOR No worries here. You can feel free to read this aloud to your prayer group or any kin you desire. Another great, quick read by Schecter. But just because it’s short does not mean it’s not disturbing. A bizarre story.

Book was an interesting look into the lives of the offenders and their victims. Will recommend this book to my dad and mother.

As a writer of crime fiction, I'm always looking for good stories to peak my creative juices. When I saw the new Amazon Original series by Harold Schechter, I downloaded them all. The Pied Piper was a quick and easy read, like reading an extended news article in the New York Times or Vanity Fair. Well written, with rich details, and exquisitely produced by Amazon, this tale is worth your time. I especially appreciated the connection made in the reporting to a story developed by a famous American short story writer that was inspired by this true crime story. My only criticism of the work is Schechter's tendency to utilize tired stereotypes or tropes in his descriptions of his subjects - utilized to create word stingy character sketches. I understand this choice was made in service of word counts and brevity, but a piece as rich as this one deserved a bit more originality in character development. Otherwise, an excellent piece!

This book is very interesting and typically suitable for those who want to learn just the basics of spanish for a quick tour in Costa Rica. I like that it is focusing on the most needed phrases for an English speaking tourist. But I had some difficulties in pronouncing some of the phrases and words, I think the author should have written each phrase pronunciation along with the translation.

I bought this for my family's trip because I'd heard there are local-isms in the language that it would be helpful to know. This book is just standard spanish--nothing unique to Costa Rica whatsoever. Also several typos!! Do they just put a different cover on the same book of Spanish phrases depending on what people order? I'm returning mine for a refund.

Super simple and straightforward book – tons of useful phrases in English and Spanish language. They are divided in categories so you can easily find what you need. There is not much more to say about it, simple and helpful little book that can make your life easier in Costa Rica.
